Daniel Edwin Barker (born June 25, 1949) is an American atheist activist who served as an evangelical Christian preacher and musician for 19 years but left Christianity in 1984. He and his wife Annie Laurie Gaylor are the current co-presidents of the Freedom From Religion Foundation. He has written numerous articles for Freethought Today, an American freethought newspaper. He is the author of several books including Losing Faith in Faith: From Preacher to Atheist.
Barker has been an invited speaker at Rock Beyond Belief. He is on the speakers bureau of the Secular Student Alliance.

@Margie Smith There's definitely a psychological need there in a lot of people. Of course, I find myself wanting the other person to see things my way as well. So I don't know that this is concentrated in religion or apologetics.

Rule #1 in a debate is if you start getting emotional about your side, you're either realizing your are wrong, incapable of properly defending your side or are very poorly prepared. And then to switch to an unfounded personal attack was just...well...not very Christian. lol

Tom mistakes came from the fact that he’s using the Bible to prove the Bible. It’s like taking the murderer defence story as prove of his innocence.

To be fair, he provided and claims quite a bit of extra-biblical evidence. Neither speaker addressed the question of how much of the Bible is fiction. Barker seemed to take the default position despite being the designated pro side. One day, I'll try a statistical sampling to see what the Bible is made of.

And they interpret it entirely differently and read it in a different language with passages that were altered during the translation process. @@manifold1476 Because 360 is a great number in pre-computer times, it must be everywhere. You can divide by all numbers from 1-9 except 7 and get straight results. Very practical. Same with a dozen, it can be divided by 2, 3, and 4. Practical for business. Just comes to my mind: maybe that is the the reason why 7 plays a special role among jews.

The Christian's kind of talking reflects a rigorous education in obedience. Christianity like other religions is about total submission. Critical faculties play only a role as far as they are confirming the religious bias. A Muslim would defend the Quran in the same way. Why are these guys always looking like businessmen? There is a very real pattern of biblical scholars or bishops priests rabbi etc that after decades of supposed humble obiedience and faith that end up questioning their "calling" and question far many ways the true definition and direction of God. Dan made his stand and presented his case very kindly and valuable for others to consider. Some young men destined for the priesthood leave the church because their questions about the old and new testament are never answered. Not even the priest are drinking the cool-aied.

The Old Testament is framed on the template of the hero’s journey. It’s as viable as Jason and the Argonauts. Just a different genre of story telling. People today lost what to do with them. Theists think they’re historical. I presume, as do others, that’s a fear based thing.

The only mention of the Israelites in Egyptian history was in The Merneptah Stele where they had a battle near Canaan and defeated Israel around 1210 BC

Dan is old enough to be his opponents' father at the very least. Not taking anything away from anyone but Dan has so much experience on his side that even if his opponent were to be more intelligent than him and more well read relative to his age it would be hard to counter that depth of experience.

Nobody can make a strong argument for that because it’s impossible - there will always be ample reasonable doubt. It doesn’t take decades of experience to understand that, and no amount of experience on Tom’s part will change that.

God created the entire Universe; With just words "Let there be light", and there was light. And yet, God had to send frogs & locusts to pester the Pharaoh of Egypt in setting Moses free? It makes no sense! Why play the game of the 10 plagues of Egypt, when you could instantly turn all Egyptians into salt just like in Sodom & Gomorrah? The 10 plagues was like a dramatic screenplay unfolding to reveal the ultimate plot of a story while eating popcorn.

The Old Testament reminds me of something composed by a writing circle, where a group of friends meet once a week and one of them reads the story that he/she has written, and in the weeks that follow, other writers have to come up with even more absurd stories ...

Why is it so frequently that theists come across as dishonest? 25:20 'He says there is no archeological evidence' No, he didn't. That's just not true 'He says there were no camels' Again, no he didn't. Maybe try listening to the words he actually says. Seems suspiciously similar to how y'all read the bible. Y'all seem to just assume what was meant instead of reading the actual words that are there. How or when y'all became mind readers is a mystery I doubt I'll ever solve.
