The touchdown passes were insane, he broke the record by 12. But you also have to keep in mind that the NFL had not longer before that just moved to a 16 game schedule. Also, the yards record was not by THAT large a number. Dan Fouts had put up 4715 yards and 4802 in consecutive years right before Marino's 5084 yards. But yeah, I agree, he would probably put up some big numbers in today's game.

To put things in perspective, Marino smashed the TD passed record by 12...or rather 25 percent. iirc the record was 36 by Y.A. Title and George Blanda. It would be like someone coming along and throwing 68 in a season now and obliterating the current record. If truth be toldMarino could have thrown 60 even back then but Shula would insist on getting conservative and trying (in vane) to run the ball with big leads, which they would often blow. The Jets Game when they lost in overtime was a classic example. Up 45-38 and with the ball and a Marino hotter than ever, all they need to win the game is one first down. Three runs netted three yards followed by a punt and of course that defense couldn’t stop anyone so now it’s 45 all. Lost the coin toss and never saw the ball again. Miami 45-Jets 51. For all the numbers Marino put up in his prime, Shula still held him back. They should have just thrown in every down....
@McDonaldsDude
@McDonaldsDude Жыл бұрын
Should be noted that Blanda did 36 TD passes in 12 games and Tittle did 36 passes in 13 games (both were in 14 game seasons though). So adjusted for games played, Blanda would tie Marino and Tittle would be close. Still, what Dan did was amazing and everyone forgets he had another 40+ TD season in 1986 when he had 44.

I wouldn't bet against Dan Marino throwing for 65 TD's in a single season.

Pass along the line of scrimmage followed by a 60 yard run by the receiver = 60 yards in the passing stats. So much of "yards passing" today is YAC Those guys had to throw downfield to get that kind of yardage. It is a different game now for sure.

Agreed. Kelly, Elway and Marino would have been in the 600+ career TDs.

Dan Marino was perhaps the greatest PASSER in the history of the game, but far from the greatest quarterback. Big difference.

I've never been a fan of the RPO offense. I think that started as a crutch for running QBs that couldn't hang in the pocket and read defenses past the first read.

When Marino counts the help he would get from today's RPOs, Dan Patrick doubts that fact because Marino doesn't have the running ability to make defenses respect the run part of the RPO. The RPO also encompasses the the WR/RB run-pass option. The QB has the option to hand off or pull the ball out and throw based off of what he sees. That would be a huge advantage with how he saw the field, processed his reads and released the ball.

Depends on his defense if he has a good defensive team then he would have 4,000 yard seasons because he would be sitting on the bench because his teams would be smashing his by the 3rd quarter.

What would Dan Marino`s numbers be like today? Well pick an elite quarterback in today's game and Dan Marino would put up similar numbers. Those players are elite and Dan Marino would also be elite.

Marino was just ahead of his time. Defenses were still built mainly to stop the run game. Once the league caught up his numbers were nothing special. If he came in now he wouldn't be that great because he's the least mobile QB in history.

Just think how many yards someone like Jonny Unitas would have had with todays rules. 40,000 lifetime yards passing back in the 50s and 60s when they would literally beat the sh#t out of QBs and maul the receivers, would equal a career of 65,000 for that QB today.

@Kaizaro123 THANK YOU!! I'm 32 so I'm a millennial but I wasn't raised soft like most kids I grew up with. I played little league and highschool baseball and I can remember my last year of little league I was 13 and I had one hell of a year individually but my team went 4-20 that year and after the last game a kid came up to the coach and said "do we get trophies this year?" and because I was voted team captain the coach looked at me and said "David you're the team captain do we get trophies?" I said "Trophies????" He smiled and said nothing else. He was the first coach I had that didn't give his team a participation trophy. I literally have none of the participation trophies that I was given my mother made sure I knew how ridiculous they were. I still have my individual awards and trophies plus a couple tournament trophies but anyway I just wanted to back up what you said with that story. Ive always felt out of place with people my own age because I was raised different than most kids I grew up with. I get a long better with people my parents age lol
