Teams win SB not QB'S. Lets stop this B.S. right now. ANY two QBs in history ANY two YOU CAN NAME show up for a tryout in their primes and you not knowing who is who and one is Dan Marino, the other one is going to be holding the clipboard for life. Period. No discussion. End of story. Each generation wants to hold on to their favorite as the best and will glean every aspect IN STATS to put him there as in winning SB'S. Peyton Manning " the only QB I ever watched while I was standing on the sidelines when we played them was Dan Marino." Why? Marino played in a era of mugging wide receivers on defense and QB roughing was a joke and rarely if ever called. Marino never had a running back and his defenses consistently ranked in the lower half of the league(check it out) which cut heavily into ball possession from the O side of the ball. The man threw for over 5000 yds which today would equate to 7200 and add in the rule changes where you can't touch the receiver and he legitimately would have easily surpassed 7500 yds....all this from a QB who was 999.9% pocket passer. No roll outs to buy time...no bubble screens for backs to catch and run....AHHHH..this is a joke. Today a Dan MARINO would be either banned or broken up. Tom Brady has 6 Rings which collect dust from team wins, and he would still hold the clipboard behind not only Marino but Elway also until their arms were severed...then again maybe. Rings collect dust...QB'S such as Dan Marino collect accolades from their peers on their ability to physically and mentally produce eye popping numbers year in and year out DESPITE their supporting cast. Tom Brady? As soon as the TEAM declined he bolted for a team dominant in defense with offensive pieces in place in warm weather no less. Another clipboard holder and if you think Tom Brady going up against Marino in their primes on a tryout could win the starting job.....McDonalds called......you got the job.

Marino mainly benefitted from 2 things-the Rule change in '78 (the Mel Blount Rule) concerning the ability to bump and run with receivers, and the decision by his coach to allow him to throw around 35 passes per game. No other QB had that luxury until Drew Bledsoe did it in the mid to late '90's.

If you take away one of his two Super Bowl hes definitely not in in my opinion. He was great for two post seasons but other than that he was a slightly above average QB. He probably gets in for his two superbowl runs and his iron man streak but I dont think he should. Outside of those two superbowl runs he never felt like a hall of Famer to me. Same goes for Phillip Rivers. Like Dan said, hes in the "hall of fame of very good" if I remember correctly. Very good for a long time equals hall of fame to me... I would rather call it the hall of fame of "better than average". Hall of fame means all time great... do we really consider Eli as all time great. Dan Marino and guys like him set the bar.... @@javierdelgado1554 It is actually easier for the QB now. Do a search for "nfl how have rules changed to favor the offense" and you will see many articles on how the game does make it easier for the offense, specifically the QB, now. And there is actual statistical proof. The leagues top 10 years for passer rating? The last 10 years. The top 20? Only one year is not in the last 20. Furthermore, one of Eli's best years in 2018 had 92.4 and that put him at #23 on the passer rating list. In 1995 a 92.4 would be #7. In 1980, it would be the best in the league. Athletes are getting better on both sides, but the defense's hands are being tied with more and more rules restrictions. Montana basically said that he wished he could play today because he took so many hits back then that were considered legal. The bottom line is that Eli is just not that good and for anyone to say that he has about the same passer rating as QBs that played more than 20 years ago just don't know or understand football.

Simply put, Eli was lucky. In 2007, the Giants defense was destroyed by Romo, Favre, and Brady in the regular season and lost by 11.5 points. In the post season, those three didn't show up and the Giants squeaked by barely a field goal. And those are the facts. Eli is average at best. If Marino would be a rookie today, he would probably own every significant passing record in about 12 years. Eli was lucky. It wasn't talent on his part.

@Edmund Blackadder Wow! You almost did all of my work for me! But, let’s back up just a bit for more clarity that Eli was lucky and not good. In the 2007 regular season, Brady, Favre, and Romo DESTROYED the Giants defense to the tune of 45-32, 31-20, 35-13 ,and 38-35 points. That’s an average of 37+ points scored against the Giants for an average win of 11 points when one of those games was only by 3. In the playoffs, Eli lead the Giants to FEWER points and he’s their savior because none of those same QBs scored over 20? Please explain this. Oh, yeah, Eli has NEVER beaten a single playoff team to score over 20 points. Not only that, but Eli also made it to the playoffs 4 other times that Giants fans conveniently forget. Let’s recap those 4 games: 4 losses, 3 blowouts, 1 shutout, a combined 3 TDs, 7 ints, 1 game over 169 yards, 54 passer rating. And let’s not forget his non winning percentage of 117-117. Weren’t any of those game important also? But, please continue! Trust me, I’ve destroyed Eli fan after Eli fan with facts over a career instead of just two or even 8 games that make up less than 4% of his career. What did he do with the other 96% plus? Yeah, I’ll wait on that! I’ve be waiting a LONG TIME! lol

And to be clear, I am a New Yorker who was raised in Miami during all but the first year of Marino's career. I witnessed first hand the anguish Dolphin fans suffered at the consistent playoff failures of the Dolphins under Marino. I can tell you that most of the people I know would gladly take Eli's 2 SB wins for their franchise over the legacy Marino left the Dolphins. Football is a team sport and it is the team's success that matters to me over individual accomplishments. Keep all your records Marino. I choose SB glory for my team any day of the week.
@henryrodriguez62604 жыл бұрын
@Marcus Middleton Pardon me for not making it explicit, but SB glory comes about from the on-field contributions a player makes to help their team make and win the SB. To compare Eli with Garappolo in this regard is comparing apples to oranges (and is a backhanded insult). A back-up usually does not make these contributions, save for the likes of Hostetler and Foles. So no, I would not take Garappolo's pre-KC career over Marino's. But I would take Eli Manning. Of course, my point of view is one that value's the team success (namely, a player's contributions toward it) much more than individual statistical performance.
@tomknapp619410 ай бұрын
Of course they would. But, it wasn't Eli that won either game or 5/8 games through the playoffs 2007 and 2011. It was the defense not allowing more than 20 points in a game, only 15.1 points per game, and a passer rating of 74. Even when those same teams put up 45, 31, 35, 38, 28, and 37 points against the Giants in the regular season. Seriously, what QB cannot beat that? Oh, wait. Even with all that defensive help, Eli still barely managed to win 5/8 games by 4 points or less even when the opposing pro bowl QB was having one of his worst games of the year. Eli was carried by the defense. Something of which that Marino never had the pleasure.

This is a flawed arguement. Dan says if you drop Marino in San Fransisco he wins a few superbowls. Then you say Eli was never the best quarterback in the nfl at any point. Neither was Troy Aikman. But if you dropped Eli on that Cowboys team with that offensive line and Irvin and Smith? Eli could've won 3 rings like Troy did. Shit he won 2 without all that. And Eli still holds the NFL single postseason record for most passing yards with 1200 yards in 2011. Saying the defense was responsible for that run is ignorant.

Younger people can garner valuable things from simply playing: team work, perseverance, etc. But at the professional level you're only there for one reason: to win Championships. Marino never won any, and if you listen to him in interviews, that's a very big deal to him. Manning felt that triumph of hoisting the lombardy twice, that's a priceless feeling. Stats are nice but stats are often forgotten and never immortalized. Championship wins are forever. I could care less if Marino was the better or more talented athlete, anyone who understands professional sports would choose Eli's career over Marino's.

I'll tell you what. I'm going to let you pick a QB based solely upon their regular season feats. There is not a direct comparison because I don't have any research on Marino other than a few basic things, but let's go with it anyway. QB A will have a losing regular season record at .490, top 10 passer rating only once and lead the league in interceptions 3 times. QB B will own every significant passing record until softer rules allow other QBs (including QB A) to have better stats. Which one would you choose? Now, if I told you to match the QB to the post seasons records of 2 SB wins or 1 SB loss, which QB do you think would belong to each?

For several years during Marino's career, he was playing against a Bills' team with Jim Kelly, Andre Reed, Thurmon Thomas, and Bruce Smith (all Hall of Famers) who won the AFC championship 4 times) and coached by the great Marv Levy. They were a powerhouse that Marino had to face twice a season, every season.
