In this video I explain how passing stats can be era adjusted in the NFL, why they are necessary and whether Dan Marino or Patrick Mahomes passing for 100 touchdown passes in a record number of games had the more impressive record.

Marino is still the greatest QB I've ever seen! 🐐 Marino was like Mahomes on steroids

Let's think about this. Marino played 17 seasons. Brady played 23. Mahomes is a great QB so far. *BUT* Marino is the greatest QB (and hottest) to have ever played the game. Period.

Marino is the most physically gifted and talented QB to ever play the position.

Oh yes.

Thanks for this video. I think the other variable that needs to be considered is that Marino would take less physical punishment in this era and Mahomes would take more punishment in the 1980s. So it is possible that having a fresher body would improve Marino's performance and having a more beaten up body would diminish Mahomes' performance. That being said...although Dan Marino was my childhood hero...Patrick Mahomes is probably the best quarterback I've ever watched.

good stuff man. Appreciate you taking the time to create this formula. I just might have to use this formula to compare players from different eras. I feel this does a good job applying context

But let's say Marino threw 100 TD passes and threw for 7,000 yds.-----it is still IN THE REGULAR SEASON. How would that fix his problem to play better IN THE PLAYOFFS ?? Are you aware of just how BAD Marino was in a majority of his playoff games ?? PFR did a study about that and Dan is way way way down the list for Value given to his team in the playoffs. Top 100---PROBABLY NOT !!

They determined that Marino gave his team a NEGATIVE VALUE in 10 playoff games and a Value in the single digits in 2 others. That represents 66% of all of his po games. The worst part--3 of his 4 (75%) championship games were Negative Value games. Dan's overall Value ended up at a terrible NEGATIVE 156.

Here are other Values: Favre 302, Warner 422, Aikman 527, Young 580, Elway 767, Bradshaw 903, and Montana 1,292. Chase Stuart left PFR in '06 so there are no totals for Unitas, Starr, Brady, Manning, etc., etc. This certainly passes the "common sense test". Again, Marino's Value was a terrible Negative 156.

Why were Dan's 3 championship game LOSSES Negative Value games--he had 4 TD's but 6 INT's and 2 fumbles, a Passer Rating under 60, and he led his offense to an avg. of only 12 p.p.g. How can a TEAM win championships when their QB is playing like that ?? They can't and they didn't. Dan was playoff challenged a majority of the time.

My point---it doesn't matter how great Marino was in the Reg. Season because he didn't come through for his teammates when they were counting on him to be good enough to help them win big playoff games. That is the biggest difference between Marino and Mahomes.
