Having been a student of Dr. Cargill, I can say that he does what a good teacher should do. He teaches his sutdents HOW to think, not WHAT to think.

Teaching how is teaching what.

Sorry, but no. Teaching someone HOW to cook, that is, teaching them all of the techniques necessary to cook various dishes, from baking to frying to broiling to grilling to roasting to sautéing to poaching to simmering to boiling to steaming to braising to stewing to carmelizing to preparing raw foods, and teaching them the ingredients from around the globe is fundamentally DIFFERENT from telling them WHAT to cook for dinner. I feel bad for students who went to schools where they were only taught one way to think or one way to do things-where the HOW and the WHAT were synonymous.

The efforts to combat biblical misinformation is fraught with the challenges of being in the public square, dealing not only with honestly held beliefs that are counter to factual information, but also with skillful demagogues who have other agendas than disseminating accurate data. The Bible, in particular, is an institution that people have made an integral part of their personal identities, so it's quite the minefield to navigate. Good that there are people willing to rise to the challenge. Thanks for both of you and your colleagues and the work you do.

I appreciate you both so much for what you do to make information available & accessible. Anthropology & archaeology have long been interests of mine but the world of academia is not a good fit for me in many ways. Social media has been an incredible boon, providing platforms for PhDs to reach out to to the public & allow folks like me greater access to the topics that catch our interest. In turn, my children are finding experts in the topics that catch their interest & seeking knowledge beyond what is taught in the traditional public school system because they have learned by example that the information is out there & how to assess whether the person providing the information is doing so in a way that supports true critical thinking on the subject or that is intended to indoctrinate.

How can a fake be discovered if someone does not investigate first? It seems like the general media does not understand no one can just look at an object and immediate know the providence. Investigation and research are important, and they take time.

Stellar chat, gentlemen. I can tell that without naming names you're talking about certain pop-archaeologists that argue for a 12,000 year old cataclysm that wiped the slate of civilization clean before the survivors were able to pick up the pieces and continue moving forward with human progress. I think Robert is absolutely correct in saying that the next phase of online trust and engagement is based upon genuine expression, truth to oneselve's own nature. In a complex academic field where pop-archaeologists are inclined to make big claims and at the same time point to moments when the apparent consensus of archaeology got it wrong (Dead Sea scrolls? I always thought that was accurate), what do you think is the best rubric for a layman to operate by to discern skilled academicians from hucksters?

What a wonderful discussion! I have been following you many, many years on all different social media sites, I have all your books, and I've watched all your TV appearances. I subscribe to your website. I follow every single scholar that you mention. I love hearing your perspective on things. I love seeing you collaborate with other scholars that I love. I would love to see you do more collaborations with Dan. I can't wait for his podcast to come out. I have a list of other favorites that I would love to see you collaborate with!!!! Like you, I don't believe the story with the teacher at all. It's just not how a teacher would behave. I think that they had egg on their faces and wanted to try to save face somehow. I'm kind of interested in learning more about how a very modern inscription fooled the best scientists of the IAA. This was a wonderful discussion. I enjoyed it very much. ❤

Ancient history can be corroborated by archeology, secular writings, artifacts, and geology. But nowhere has anything to do with God been proved.

He has, though that's not his general focus nor expertise. He agrees that they're a-historical, not what Joseph Smith claimed they were, and that the data indicate a 19th century origin.

45:18 not only does the “it was a teaching tool” claim make it so there’s only one person to blame but the only person that gets blamed conveniently is anonymous! Obviously this is a lot of speculation but it definitely sounds fishy.

Dan, surely you have read 2nd Thessalonians 1:8-9. 8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; You are correct that gehenna, tartarus or hades are not used here. But is the concept of destruction not here? Please be honest. I understand your mission, just be honest.

Why do you look for punishment on your enemies? Is forgivness not in your heart. Look deeper. “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to SAVE THE WORLD. John 12:47 Romans 5:18 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation FOR ALL PEOPLE, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life FOR ALL PEOPLE.
