One half of TV’s most-loved double acts in conversation with one of gen-KZfaq’s biggest pairings who will be sharing their wisdom on how to engage young audiences and what it’s like being your own writers, editors and commissioners. Join them for a free-flowing and funny chat about fame, resisting definition, comedy and cakes.
Dan Howell and Phil Lester are household names (to anyone under 25) who started on KZfaq in 2006 and 2009 with the simple aim of making people laugh, and sharing how awkward they are. Their modern storytelling spans across six KZfaq channels including comedy skits, vlogs and gaming which have over 1.7 Billion views. Their recent book went to number 1 on The Times and New York Times Bestseller lists and their sellout live stage show tour completed 85 dates worldwide, selling 200,000 tickets. Two of KZfaq’s most loved British creators, they are best known for their quirky style, alternative humour and incredibly passionate audience.

@Mara_1337
@Mara_1337 5 жыл бұрын
yes, they are perfect for it. everyone loved the mukbang video and their livestreams where they just talk but they could take it further and actually produce calm podcasts about different topics, also more serious stuff. Considering many people just listen to youtube videos in the background so someone talks, I am sure everyone would love their podcasts.

I love how serious they got while still being humorous and entertaining. What struck me as the most important aspect of this interview was how Dan and Phil are really like advocates of the internet and the youth. We all know vlogging is being looked down upon by a majority of people (even KZfaq fans themselves), but I liked how Dan, in a way, defended that style of doing YT (considering that they're not even stereotypical "vloggers") by expounding that it's the content the people want anyway, and that it still takes up skills in a variety of disciplines related to the internet to do them. I also love how they pointed out that there's really not much content aimed at the youth (which I limit to tweens to "early" adults, because a lot of series do address/reflect the lives of people at their late 20s), and how television should adapt to the needs of the internet-savvy youth by creating content that should appeal to them and making them in a way that's accessible to these people (aka since most do not have easily disposable money, putting it free in the internet and just making revenue off the views, or that's my interpretation of what they said). I basically loved how articulate they were without being condescending and how hard they were trying to make the "business" people, and the conventional media, understand why KZfaq is a viable platform, and how the youth is an important demographic that must not only be addressed but also not patronized and belittled.

I'm one of them ! She dragged me in with her and I'm so glad she did, we get to enjoy this together and have something to chat and laugh about all the time. Palomino Joy I wish my parents were as supportive as you are. I do know of at least 4 parents in the community and I'm really happy whenever I hear their perspective on D&P. It's actually interesting because D&P's audience are considered to be tween girls only, but actual engagement with the Phandom will show that there's variance in their audience, though admittedly the teen girls do compromise the largest subgroup. It just shows that their humor does translate across age groups and gender-identities. Your children are lucky to have you. Not all parents try to understand their children's interests, much less take actual sincere pleasure in them. So thanks for that. 👍

Pearl asdf wow thanks for that, I'm very flattered. I think there are quite a lot of 40ish olds here but we are generally the quiet observers but my daughter keeps telling me I should at least let them know that my age group watches them too - only downside is not getting anything else done anymore😂😂😂 But Dan&Phil have been the best thing that has happened to my daughter, it's given her the confidence to believe dreams can come true

I love them both so much and what I've gained from being their fan base is their demographic is very large. You can be 12years old and find them funny and cute, or myself, Dan's age, 26 years old and I find them so sincere and real with their audience. No clickbait and trends that are happening; they find comedic ways to participate without the force of "do it for the views". Intelligent and educated regardless of their education background and such creative minds! absolutely love this interview! sue's questions were all interesting and the conversation it came out of are very informational. she was genuine in her questions never really look down upon dan and phil/youtubers and what they do! (no surprise though, she IS sue perkins, an absolute lovely person!) i never really watched any interviews of dan and phil that address youtube and their careers this seriously while also maintaining some sort of humour. i love how they are advocating and defending youtube, trying to subvert the "youtube is uninspiring and only has talentless vloggers wanting a quick buck" narrative. so so happy that dan didn't undermine zoella's achievements and hard work like what traditional media always portrays her. phil talking about fandoms and the internet, how it helps people connect with others with the same interests instead of the usual, "millenials are turning anti social because of the internet" narrative. hope they'll take on more interviews like this!

I also love how despite all that, they still were able to come up with intellectual and well thought out answers without offending either side but looking at it from almost an unbiased point. Also Sue was a great interviewer and I enjoyed listening to her questions because she seemed very engaged herself!

I never realized what Dan said about content for teenagers-there is a huge gap there for young people on television. They hire 24 year olds to play 16 year olds and its unrealistic because you don't see yourself on TV you see these people with perfect makeup and no acne and unrealistic problems. But then KZfaq has teens or even just young people in their 20's that are more real and relatable. The audience involvement is important and I appreciate interacting with content creators. The YT creators and community feel more down to earth and relatable because it's all them. Actors and other celebrities just show up and do their thing, no behind the scenes, and they seem untouchable because they're playing a character. There are characters on YT but you also know the content creator.

This was brilliant to watch! I agree with everything they said but especially with regard to global accessibility. So many times I have hoped to watch a trailer or PV and it says "not available in your country"...and then of course I go elsewhere on the internet to watch it. I pay for content (like Crunchyroll, Netflix, etc) but there is so much content that I want to see that is not available unfortunately.

internallogic In my case, I simply don't have the money for a good vpn service, while they're cheaper if you buy 2 years, there's no certainty that the vpn will work on Netflix especially with their crackdown on proxies. I live in Germany and Netflix has 1,500 and something movies and series while the US has about 7000! I even pay a little more (euro)! Geo Walls don't even make sense on the Internet! If anyone can recommend a vpn service that isn't as pricey and works on Netflix I'd be delighted haha

Most of the other interviews I've seen so far were somehow uncomfortable to watch, as the interviewer usually doesn't fully understand what being a KZfaqr means and tends to ask awkward questions This panel, though, was so good to watch. Sue asked interesting and relevant questions and was actually interested in what Dan and Phil had to say. Dan and Phil, on the other hand, were very eloquent and had very interesting and intelligent things to say. I've enjoyed this so much!

I just stared at dans face while he was talking, and I just didn't recognise him. I had this moment when I was looking at someone I didn't realise was different. This isn't Danisnotonfire. This isn't someone who's pretending. Someone who is awkward and nervous and wants to hide themselves. This is Daniel Howell. Comfortable with himself. Happy. Natural. Casual. This face has changed so much. From being an innocent looking, soft, oval shaped teenagers face, to becoming a face with maturity, and knowledge, and joy. His hair? Yeah. That used to just be a straightened fringe that hid his face and became such an icon, such a symbol for him. Now it's something that he is embracing, after disliking it for so long. He is expressing himself and his confidence, and the emo fringed, oval faced Dan wouldn't even be able to imagine what he has gone through. Hard times and good times, memories and the future. What he has achieved. What he loves. >♡

I love watching Dan and Phil being professional and being so aware of the modern reality.And personally,I'd love to see more content of their opinions and/or view on various issues and less fan-service.Because,as their young fanbase gets older it wants more relatable/informational content and it's making me really happy to see that 2017 is a year of evolution for their content.

I love the face dan makes whenever Sue asks a question like he's trying to process all of the words he's going to say a once and has like 2 seconds to do it. At end he looks kind of proud that he did it in time😂😂

Something about this interview was so nice- seeing Dan and Phil in a completely different environment, without the heavy editing or the forced humor... maybe that's just me, but I found it refreshing and it just confirmed how much I idolize these two. Obviously they're both intelligent people, but I was still impressed by how genuine they both were. You can tell that they're passionate about what they do and ugh, I love these boys.
