Dan Phillips turns backyard scraps into whimsical Texan houses

Transforming wine corks and bottle caps into flooring, cow bones into countertops, frame samples into ceilings, and old deck boards into doors, Dan Phillips believes a second life is possible building refuse.
His company, Phoenix Commotion, turns trash into homes, employs “unskilled” workers and creates shelter for low-income families, but it’s not a non-profit. Instead, Phillips is trying to show that there are many good reasons to reuse construction waste (estimated as high as 10-15% of the materials that go into a building) and provide a whimsical alternative to mobile homes or other affordable housing.
With no formal training in architecture or construction, Phillips is a self-taught carpenter, plumber, and electrician, but he has no problem complying with local building codes. “Every building code has a provision that alternative materials and strategies are allowable provided you fulfill the intent of the code. The only thing codes do is protect public health and safety. So if there is nothing dangerous about it I can do whatever I want.”
He estimates his home is 75 to 85 percent salvaged material. He employs 5 minimum-wage workers, but also requires the home’s eventual owner (usually single mothers) to work on their future shelter. Since founding Phoenix Commotion with his wife 20 years ago, Phillips and his ever-rotating crews have built dozens of homes in Huntsville, Texas for low-income families and artists.
We visited his plumbed-and-wired treehouse home built in bois d’arc tree (part of an artist’s compound with a 350-square-foot rental cottage and separate studio space), his “bone-house” (made from donations from the “bone yards” of local ranchers), and his latest project, a home shaped like a cowboy boot.
*Note: Dan Phillips passed away on December 21, 2021, at age 76 in Huntsville, Texas. Daniel Alvord Phillips (Jun 4, 1945 - Dec 21, 2021). In memoriam.

It is amazing to see the completed house in this video.) My best friend and I built an amazing tree house when we were 12-14 right before high school started. It had two stairways leading up to a hatch that we could lock. Push open the hatch at the top of the second ladder and u climb up into the first floor with rug, balcony, shelves, walls.. It was awesome. For a year or two we thought we were done because it was already so high and took a lot of work. One day we realized we could keep building higher. We started on another floor directly above the first. We were almost 2 years older at this point and this 2nd floor was crazy. Plexi-glass skylight- door with hinges and a lock windows that opened with shutters on hinges, roof vent, roof shingles. Standing on the roof you were about 50 feet high. As 14 years old this was out fucking masterpiece and believe me it was amazing. We had already had some fun partying, and bring girls up there......but... we left a candle burning one night right before we got to have the REAL funin high school with the treehousewe worked sohard on. It completely burned down. Most of the towns fire department was there around 4 in the morning and the entire neighborhood and surrounding areas were awake, watching my hard earned pride turn to ashes. ohhh well. Just trust me this was one of the top 20 int he Nation Easy--built by 13 year olds.

I liked this documentary very much, it's inspiring and happy. But then I need to ask: Is it a real tree house or photoshopped, I mean, it looks as if being in the air, how would the house be attached to the tree(s)?Also, such drooping branches would seem far too unsafe to build on, since they would probably droop more with the time under the weight! Did he speak on that, I did not hear.
