In the predawn hours of March 4, 2002, just below the 10,000-foot peak of a mountain in Afghanistan, a fierce battle raged. Outnumbered by Al Qaeda fighters, Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman and a handful of SEALs struggled to take the summit in a desperate bid to find a lost teammate. Chapman, leading the charge, was gravely wounded in the initial assault. Believing he was dead, his SEAL leader ordered a retreat. Chapman regained consciousness, finding himself alone with the enemy who was closing in on three sides. Thus began the most difficult and exceptional fight of his life.
For the U.S., the battle proved the deadliest entanglement of Operation Anaconda. We lost 7 men there at Takur Ghar, including Jason Cunningham and Neil Roberts.
On August 22, 2018, Pres Trump posthumously awarded the medal of honor to John Chapman. My guest today, Dan Schilling, has written a book, Alone at Dawn, to capture the life and legacy of this American Hero.
Although the book doesn’t come out until June, I loved getting an inside scoop on Chapman’s life leading up to his final mission and how Dan became involved.
We also talk about his extreme sports and why he set a Guinness World Record for 201 BASE jumps in 24 hours.
Pre-order Alone at Dawn here plus check out Dan’s other books.
Watch drone footage of Chapman’s incredibly heroic final stand here.

I've read up about this operation before. Robert's Ridge, The Mission, The Men, and Me, both awesome books. I've always looked at March 4th as our modern Black Hawk down. Alone At Dawn was an outstanding read and I'm happy that the badasses of CCT are getting some nods. I was happy to hear John won the Medal of honor and glad this book focused on his life. Alone At Dawn brought me to tears and left me with a profound sense of astonishment to be able to witness and read about the purest strength of someone's character. It's cliche to say but we need more men like John.

I'm stealing this quote from someone but he said.."John Chapman was not trapped on a mountain with Al-Qaeda fighters....the Al-Qaeda fighters was trapped on a mountain with John Chapman....

Chapman was titanic. He is the opposite of all of the resentment and envy we see in the world today, and shows us clearly that it is the just, kind man who is a true warrior. I have been trying to tell the small people chirping about civil war in the US that they have no idea what will come for them if they get their wish. Men like John will come. Not out of hate, but out of love for country, family and God. Godspeed John. As Patton said, thank God such men have lived, and live today.

It’s my understanding that the SEALS and AF SPECOPS still have beef over the Takur Ghar battle. Heard on the Mike Drop Podcast that a SEAL from another team and the commander of the 24th got into a fist fight over this incident.

I'm trying to figure out what actions justified Slabinski of getting the medal of honor. No disrespect to him, but when you hear stories like that of John Chapman and other who've either dive on grenades or expose themselves to extreme enemy fire to the save lives of others its hard to see why someone who retreated and left men on the battlefield get medals of honor. Yes, Mr. Slabinski probably made the right decision to reduce having more team casualties, but the nations highest award? Just doesn't sound right.
@gotmikl3075

It's just smoothing over the Navy's feathers. If the Navy (Incl. Slabinski) hadn't tried to say it was a Chechen shooting at his own guys, despite John getting all the additional wounds, calling on the radio and expending all his ammo (not to mention that the Chechens had been up there for months building out those bunkers, together, and yet somehow he was shooting at his own side, in broad daylight, in territory they'd lived on for months, with people he'd been with for months, and shot them, uphill, at close range including hand to hand combat), it wouldn't be so bad. I'm sure he's an awesome warrior, and a good person, but Slabinski has a responsibility to acknowledge that Chapman was still alive, regained consciousness after clotting plugged the holes and being supine stabilizing his blood pressure and took the fight to the enemy. No one wants to accept they left a man behind (which anyone would have done under the circumstances), but to deny his legacy in the face of all the evidence is plain wrong and I do think his actions after the fact are other than honorable.

probably a year after the event, the training of all the seals, changed, yes, since at this time an entire team is looking for a missing man in combat, and this same team goes over this man, and leaves him behind , since the mission was to rescue this same man, or something changes or that is not even close to the so-called best military force in the world, and they are no more than a flock of chickens that leave theirs behind, clearing out all the extress of a it fights very closely as shown by the images of the predator. I am a former military officer of the Brazilian Air Force Infantry who understood everything about the video and the audio . in which it is possible to understand the circumstances.

I dread the idea of any kind of civil war or uprisings or whatever. You make it sound like you like the idea of American military gunning down and calling in strikes on Americans. My prayer is that it never happens.
