New video every day in July
Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do.
I've been experimenting with this format, working on these landscape compositions, inspired in part by the proportions of Chinese scrolls.
33" × 8.5" (inches) on 200gsm paper.
Oil paint :
Prussian Blue, Vandyke Brown
Thought this was an appropriate subject today for the anniversary of the Moon landing, 50 years ago. The image is based on the very first photograph of earth, transmitted from Apollo 11, a very grainy black and white image.

And coincidentally watching it today 5 years later 20th July. Great work - gonna try it myself later - interesting to see you were inspired by Chinese scrolls. I live in China and my art has been influenced by the various Chinese styles, I love the freedom of the Chinese Ink Work which is also part of doing this monoprinting, I think, which as mentioned before has taken my art in a new direction. Thank you.

Oh! I finally got it! I’m used to working with plates and printing from that. But he is printing directly on to the paper, which is framed by the cardboard! Neat!

Thanks very much. I really liked working on this one and will try to make a new one soon, maybe a multi coloured one, I do like this format, great for landscapes but it also works as a vertical for figures etc. Thanks for watching.

You make it look so easy. I have tried several times and still cant create a decent picture i'm happy with. I think it's to do with the amount of paint I'm using. Still enjoying the process though.

It does not always work and I sometimes practice before each video I film. This particular is a favourite and the paint application had to be more thought out. It is always best to begin with very little paint, you can always add more later. Don't give up.

Thanks very much, that is a huge compliment, I feel inspired by the way he incorporates the landscape into his photographs, his seawork series are stunning. I'm about to begin a series of monoprints working with discarded plastic waste collected from the beach, hope to post a demo of this in a few weeks. Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

Nice idea to use the Chinese scroll format. Is that a magic eraser you use to smear the colors?

I'm working with a dry sponge to gently blend the paint and add some tone to the work to give some depth.

This one was special! One question - what was the drying time of the oil paint?

I did this yesterday and it is now almost completely dry, it was a hot day and left in the sun. It normally takes 2 - 4 days for a larger work like this one.

@@DanTirels Thank you so much for the information on drying times. It helps me a great deal as I plan to do some oil mono-prints. I've only worked in acrylics and water-based printing inks so far.

I use very little paint applied in thin layers and always try to use a 200gsm paper or card so applying gesso isn't always necessary. I have used a white acrylic spray paint as a primer sometimes and thus helps.

Can you use acrylic paint rather than oil?

You can work with acrylic, but on a large work like this I would use a retarder to slow down the drying time.

I always use a smooth card or cartridge paper (200gsm)

Is there a reason you use a pallet knife rather than a braver to spread the paint to the plastic?
