I'd say it has less to do with what's happening physically on stage and more to do with what's happening in Alfred's subconscious and how his perspective on vampires is slowly altered when exposed to Count von Krolock and the vamp's seduction(case in point, the nightmare sequence Alfred has of partaking in the Vampire revelry and biting Sarah along with them, and how the music he sings wavers from getting out of the nightmares melody[the same one Krolock sings to Alfred before Alfred finally goes into the castle] and refocusing himself to the Professor's logic melody["Who, and How, and When, and Where, and Why"], before faltering again to singing the Nightmare melody, which proves of how much the vampire's influence is struggling yet winning to take it's hold on Alfred.). Even before then, when Krolock first presents himself in the story in act 1, his presence does not just attract Sarah(whom he only addresses alone after her sung lines) but also Alfred who is as aware of his presence as Sarah's while saying nothing. There are other mostly Alfred centric parts that were altered and cut by the time of the proshot(and much more onwards) that arguably show a more nuanced take on Alfred's character(as well as further establishes as the main point of view character of the story, according the show's playwright and lyricist Michael Kunze) and seduction narrative which plays to his own bisexuality (like his original reaction to Krolock bitting Sarah being different from just fainting like he does here, or how Krolock claims to understand Alfred's secluded viewpoint to lead him astray from the Professor's influence), and it's arguably most apparent in the original 1997 Vienna production and the performance given by it's original Alfred, Aris Sas. Yeah, it's such a shame what happened to this musical on Broadway =( Let's hope that it will some day return, though I honestly doubt that they'll give it another chance anytime soon...

For that, we can blame the production problems. Roman Polanski wasn't available to direct it (because if he sets foot on American soil, he'll be arrested for child rape convictions), so they got Jim Steinman to direct it. However, the suits weren't convinced that an American audience would get on board with a musical dark comedy with a Hammer Horror/glam rock aesthetic and "reworked" it into a slapstick comedy. Steinman was fired for protesting the meddling. Micheal Crawford was hired to play the Count, but he was afraid of being typecast due to similarities to the phantom of the opera (his most famous role) and so he demanded that the comedy be turned up to eleven. Guess what the result was.

I don't think most people enjoy this musical for the plot, it's kind of all over the place here :p

Kevin Tarte certainly did an OK job playing the count in this 2005 Hamburg version. But he (and all others who played the role) still pales in comparison to Steve Barton who played the original count between 1997 and 2000 in Vienna. The ending was slightly changed in later versions, actually. In here, the professor just ran away without a care in the world, in later version he is actually hopelessly trying to search for Sarah and Alfred after they have turned into vampires, which makes much more sense

Count Monsparkle that would be amazing. I feel like a lot of people would be into it. Heck as a performer I know I'd love to be in it!

I'm guessing they're putting the fangs in when they turn away from the audience, but it's amazing how well they can hide it. And I heard in some interviews by the actors that singing with those teeth is very difficult and needs additional training. That's why the role of Von Krolock is one of the most difficult roles in musicals.

Count Monsparkle that's what I was thinking, but that it awesome how they can stick the fangs in so quickly and still be able to sing with them in. That takes commitment and is why the theater is awesome.

fang insertion moments are specifically worked into the staging of the show. And every pair of fangs is moulded onto the individual actor's teeth and gums. They fit like a glove

@@CountMonsparkle yes. I was going to say Krolock must a pain in the ass to play because in most productions I don't think he takes his teeth out too often XD. I know in the recent Danish production Krolock doesn't appear to use vampire teeth anywhere near as much as your average Euro or Asian Krolock

Yeah, I get what you mean, the story was definitively weak at some parts. But I think where this musical shines the most is in atmosphere, the way it establish the frozen wasteland of Transylvania and builds up Krolock and his imposing castle. The comedy is also handled well and isn't too intrusive to the drama, except at some parts. With Sarah, it's very difficult to understand her actions, my personal interpretation is this: Being sheltered from everything for her entire life, she was really longing to just get out, and I doubt she believed in or knew that Krolock was a vampire, so she just wanted to seize the opportunity, and the fact that her parents forbid it made her want it even more. And at some point while at the castle, she was probably charmed by Krolock (since vampires are known to be able to do that) which would explain why she refused to leave until it was too late. Either that or she's just really dumb ;)

While I do like the twist that it doesn't have a happy end, I agree that the ending feels rushed (for example the Professor just leaves without caring for Alfred or Sarah at all x) They made it a bit better in later adaptions though.

My second biggest dream is to see Count of Monte Cristo musical english version. I've watched german one that you've uploaded, it was cool but that language just doesn't seem right to me. Maybe that's cuz im from Poland, I dunno :P
