Event: - In 'Dance to Heal', Nalini shares her experiences working with individuals from diverse cultures and populations through dance therapy. Her insights emphasize the importance of recognizing and adapting to varying cultural patterns among populations in order to have the most impact in the therapeutic process. Such multicultural perspectives also dovetails the theory and practice of DMT, enhancing its place as a powerful and impactful avenue to explore to heal the mind through the body...and the body through the mind.
Presenters : - Nalini Prakash Nalini is an acclaimed dancer, choreographer and teacher who is working towards integrating elements of Indian dance and creative movement in her work as a therapist at St. Elizabeths Hospital (Washington, DC), to enhance the quality of life for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness. A disciple of Sudharani Raghupathy of Chennai, India, Nalini has performed throughout India and the United States for more than three decades. Nalini holds a master's degree in dance/movement therapy from Drexel University (Philadelphia), and a master's degree in performing arts from Baroda University. She is also the co-artistic director of the Spilling Ink Project, a Washington, DC-based dance organization.
Vijay Palaparty is a Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dancer and choreographer based in Washington, DC. Vijay received his dance training from Uma Rama Rao, Sudharani Raghupathy and also Padma Rajagopal. He is founder and co- artistic director of the Spilling Ink Project, through which he produces and presents literary, visual and performing arts projects. A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a bachelor's degree in professional writing and two master's degrees-in professional writing and in literary and cultural studies, Vijay is Director of Communications, Finance Writer at NACHA - The Electronic Payments Association. He also completed his M.B.A. at the University of Maryland (College Park, MD).
American Dance Therapy Association : - The American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA), founded in 1966, is a professional organization dedicated to the profession of dance/movement therapy. The purpose of the ADTA is to establish, maintain, and support the highest standards of professional identity and competence among dance/movement therapists by promoting education, training, practice, and research. The Association provides avenues of communication among dance/movement therapists and those working in related fields, and increases public awareness of dance/movement therapy. www.adta.org
Spilling Ink Project : - Spilling Ink is a dance organization that aims to interpret, create, perform and present works rooted in two of South India's classical dance forms, Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. The organization takes an interdisciplinary approach, often incorporating visual and literary arts of India and its diaspora in its work. Spilling Ink strives to deepen audience understanding of India's contributions in artistic, cultural and social fields.
