Dandelion Flowers: Three Ways to Deep Fry Dandelion Flowers

In this video, I show you three ways that I have enjoyed dandelion flowers - deep-fried! I know that I shouldn't be eating deep-fried food all that often. But there's no getting around it -- deep-fried dandelion flowers are good. So I try to limit eating them this way, to the peak dandelion flower season. The rest of the time, I eat dandelion flowers in healthier ways, like in salads, omelettes, and more salads.
To pick the dandelion flowers, I look for big flowers that are fully open, in their prime. I could just pull their heads off by hand, but I find it goes a lot faster to just touch their stems with a sharp knife.
I can tell, for sure, that there are real dandelions and not one of the look-alikes that I'll show in future videos. Real dandelions can have a bunch of flowers, but each flower is on their own stem, that comes out of the center of the base of the plant. Real dandelions only have one flower on each stem, and that stem is hollow. It's easiest to cut the flower heads off and then clean them up back in the kitchen.
I let the flowers sit awhile to let any insects of spiders wander off on their own. I take off the sepals, or the little green fringe under the flowers, because it's bitter. If a flower falls apart while I'm messing with it, I just set it aside to use the petals separately. This seems like it might be tedious work, but it goes pretty quickly, and I shouldn't be eating that many deep-fried dandelion flowers, anyway.
Here some the deep fry! I just mix an egg, buttermilk, and some flour until it's thin enough to dip the dandelion flowers. I put the dipped flowers in a cast iron skillet with an inch or two of hot cooking oil, like sunflowers or vegetable oil.The oil is hot, but not smoking hot. I let the fried flowers sit on a towel or paper towel to let them drain a bit.
For the second way, I go back to the thick batter I abandoned earlier and mix in the loose flower petals I had abandoned, too. I mix them both to make a dandelion flower fritter. I cook them in the cast iron skillet and hot oil, just the same way as before, although it takes longer than those little flowers - they cooked fast!
The third way gives the dandelion flowers a completely different flavor! They aren't donuts - they have a great mushroom flavor, it's amazing! The batter is a thin flour and water mixture, like a tempura batter. I use a real deep fryer. In the deep fryer, the dandelions cook more evenly and with the thin batter, the flavor of the dandelions comes through a lot more.
The deep fryers are nice because you an set the oil to a constant temperature - I think I used 300 to 350 degrees for these flowers. I put the cooked flowers on a towel or paper towel, the same way as before. Dandelions flowers cooked this way are really good! And they go perfectly well with soup or chili, and a good beer.
But don't forget that dandelion flowers are healthier as part of a good salad made from weeds or as part of a wild weed omelette.
I hope you get to enjoy dandelion flowers one way or another sometime soon.

I just tried this tonight as the dandelions have just come into bloom this week.Pulled a few of the green "fringe"off seemed tedious so barely cleaned the rest. Had a dozen blooms to try out. Heated up the big cast iron pan with a little olive oil and dipped them in a thin cornstarch-flour batter.sprinkled a little Adobe seasoning when done. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you...this was THE best ! a big hit with the family( especially a discerning 14yr old who about devoured them all!). I'm sure for now on we'll be picking every dandelion we see! Great channel Chris, can't wait to see more! Thanks would have never thought of this idea or seen it anywhere else,

You're welcome -- and thank you for that taste review of the dandelion flowers! Your adjustments to the general idea sound really good -- olive oil, with a real Tempura batter, and seasoning. Thanks for those details. Your review and ideas will help other people appreciate these great plants. I'm glad your 14yr old enjoyed them, too. Happy foraging!

I have deep fried my dandelion flowers in egg & flour batter, breadcrumbs, & sometimes sprinkled them with parmesan cheese. I made Italian greens with cooked dandelion leaves mixed with cherry tomatoes, garlic, bacon and olive oil. I also made fresh green dandelion leaf salad. I have even made coffee from dandelion roots (it's actually quite good). And, of course..no meal is complete without a glass of homemade dandelion wine. The WHOLE dandelion flower is very special & useful to me. My neighbor's yards are all dandelion-free..apparently they hate dandelions. But my yard? Dandelions as far as the eye can see....except when removed for consumption! Such foolish neighbors I have. They don't know what they're missing..and I don't care to tell them. Lol.

You know what's good, that's for sure! Thanks for sharing how you enjoy so many parts of the dandelion plants! Those Italian greens sound so delicious! Dandelions are a mainstay for me, too. They are real food. It's amazing what people are missing out on -- all around them, free for the picking. And they are such pretty flowers, too. : )

@@HaphazardHomestead I just had dandelion greens with bacon, tomato, garlic & oil for dinner this evening. I had frozen some greens from last year. They were delicious!! My Nonna (Italian grandmother), taught me how to use all parts of the dandelion..when I was a child. One of the best lessons I ever learned..along with cattails, mustard greens, milk weeds, mushrooms & so many other wild edibles.

Hi ! I'm a retired nurse in Charlotte NC. I found your site a few days ago and I love it 🌸 I've watched many of your videos in the last couple of days... Today I picked 102 dandelion blossoms out of my front and backyard and my next door neighbors yard. They were everywhere ! I got so excited. I made sure to only pick every other one so as to leave the bees their share. I discovered that if I'm not going to cook them immediately, I had to turn them on their heads on a damp paper towel to keep them from closing up. I went to pick some yesterday, and found 2 ! Where did they go ??? I found that they close up in the early evening...not sure why, must just be a dandelion thing 😊 My yard is a half acre in a neighborhood built in the early 70s. Even tho there are major roads very nearby, we have an amazing amount of wild creatures ! Lots of deer, raccoons, possum, owls, several coyote..gotta keep little pets in at night. Huge snakes, turtles, 2 kinds of woodpeckers, mocking birds, and huge turkey vultures that glide in to clean up dead raccoons and such. Foraging in my yard and nearby woods is something have always wanted to do. Found a black walnut tree recently that I'll return to later in the year. Sorry for the long comment 😄 Thanks again for your channel ! PS.... Found jellyroll mushrooms on many many dead limbs on my property last month. Collected about a gallon of the wiggly things. When they dried on trays in my house, I ended up with almost a pint jar of little dry crumbles. The good thing is, when I'm ready to add to soups, I let them sit in water for about an hour. They plump right up to their original size 😊🌷

Thanks for sharing some about yourself and your foraging, Kaa Pii. I think it helps people appreciate that wild food is real food for regular people. You are in a great location for some good foraging, pretty much all year long! Nice haul on your dandelions and your mushrooms! Dandelions do close up every night. If you want to pick a lot of them just for the flower petals, it's a little trick to get them in the morning before they open up. It's less effort to get all the petals that way. You've got a nice tip for preserving your jellyroll mushrooms, too. It's amazing how many great wild edible mushrooms there are. Happy foraging! And I hope you enjoy my future videos, too! Thanks for commenting!

Tried them first time last week. Surprised to see some growing in our backyard (FL) and snipped them off near the base. I had no idea how to use them but have a cold and wanted to make a tea. I snipped the stem and flower up into one inch pieces, put them in a cup of water, microwaved it 1 minute (didn't boil) and set it aside till cool. I stained it through a tea strainer and drank what I thought was absolutely wonderful - no sugar needed. I looked some more and found a few head growing and repeated - still very good. It was a wonderful way to sit and look at videos while feeling so ill. That's how I found you and have now subscribed. I began seeing a video about Usnea and since we are surrounded by oaks, have so much it is embarrassing. I made a tincture with 100 proof vodka and I could tell it made a difference. It took over a month to make but now I have this cold and it DOES work to open me up, relieve the drainage, and stop the coughing. WOW. I can't wait to see more of your videos now that I'm hooked on what is just outside my backdoor.

I was wondering a couple of months back whether Dandelion flowers are edible, & suddenly, all these videos pop up on Dandelions. The whole plant is edible! And apparently the milk contained in the stalk is highly therapeutic. With an ailing liver, got to have me some of this great little gift from God!!

In middle school we dared one of our friends to eat a dandelion. He did it and we thought he was going to die. lol C:

That's really funny - just like kids to do something like that. I hope you get to try dandelions yourself sometime, with some good results, too!

I knew a kid in Oregon who bragged that he could eat a raw trout.. Some kid offered him a dollar if he did and the offers piled up until he was going to make about 20 bucks. So he bought a trout to school and ate it in front of all the kids. A kid threw up but it wasn't him.
