The Oakridge Boys have been a group for more than 50 yrs. Their sound, harmonies, and style, to me, are kind of that of a traditional gospel quartet. They and the Statler Brothers pretty much dominated that quartet lane of country music for a couple of decades.

Pure Country. The Oak Ridge Boys have been around since the early 40"s. They started as a gospel group out of North Carolina. The Army incited them to play on the weekends at the Oak Ridge Tennessee Manhattan Project site. They played every weekend for years and became known as the Oak Ridge Boys by the locals. The name stuck. There have been at least 2 full replacements of group members over the past 65 years.

Well as a kid, my mom blasted Country music to the point where I just wasn't interested in anything Country/Western/Southern/Bluegrass, anything in that direction. So I'm still kind of discovering what I like in that area, as an adult. Also, keep in mind a Maritime Canadian, and a good bit of that music is foreign to me. I love what I hear though.

These two groups have become fast friends. They have so much respect and admiration for each other, too. Fun fact about The ak Ridge Boys bass man Richard Sterban; Prior to joining The Oak Ridge Boys, Sterban toured with J. D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet, who were singing backup for Elvis Presley at that time. Sterban ultimately became best known for his "oom-pa-pa-oom-pa-pa-mow-mow" bass solo in the group Oak Ridge Boys for a song called Elvira which shot up the charts for many weeks in 1981. The other members of the Oaks are Duane Allen-who was sitting next to Rob, Joe Bonsall- who was trading off parts with Austin, and William Lee Golden- the guy with the long hair, beard, and cowboy hat.

The Oak Ridge Boys and The Statler Brothers were the groups of their times. Recently Hone Free did a cover of the Statler Brothers' song, Flowers On The Wall, was phenomenal. If you get a chance, you should listen to the Statler Brothers' original of the song, and then Home Free. Both are awesome in their own rights. Yeah, as a kid (I was born in the later 80s) my mom inundated me with Country music to the point where I actually couldn't stand it. It wasn't until literally 2 years ago, when I started looking at Country/Western/Southern Gospel/Bluegrass or anything with that sound that CMT would play all day. So I am still kind of discovering what I like. Mind you, there's some artists, I've grown up with, that I oved all along. Denver, Hagard, Twitty, Jennings, stuff like that. But mostly, I listened rock, pop, and as I grew up a little, Metal. So yeah, Elvira, and The Oaks were nowhere on my radar. Glad thats changed. Going to be listening to more. Maybe even react to some.

@@DanFromHali You know, I get it. I grew up way before you, back in the '6s and hated any country music, always made sure the radio was changed! But somewhere last 10 years or so started getting into some of it, maybe from watching The Voice and Blake Shelton. I loved Shania Twain first, so maybe from her songs that crossed into pop from just country. So anyway, glad we can appreciate some other types of music and Home Free does a lot of stuff not country. End of the Road (Boys II Men cover), a bunch of things during the pandemic, When a Man Loves a Woman, Never Gonna Give You Up, I Swear, Sunday Best, Meet in the Middle. Then Can't Stop the Feelin' (Just Timberlake cover), Try Everything (Shakira/Trolls song). Of course, country all the way, a favorite Hillbilly Bone! Wow, great bass lead by Tim. Enjoy the journey!! Take care.

Dan do a review of those two songs !1 YOURS is so good ! Oak Ridge Boys used to be a Southern Gospel Quartet but eventually turned to more commercial music, and they scored HUGE with this song back in the early 1980's...this song even crossed over to pop & was a top 10 hit on the Pop charts. You can see them collab with Home Free again from just this last Fall when Home Free had a streamed Holiday special...The ORB & Home Free & Jeffrey East did a spectacular live song singing of Beautiful Star of Bethlehem....react to that ....yes it's may but Austin goes full GOSPEL on his part & it's awesome !

Hey all, will be getting around to all of the comments tonight, and by then another new video will be up... Albeit not Home Free. I decided to take a shot at checking out Evynne Hollens own channel. I've only ever heard her with Peter, so thought she'd be worth checking out. I have tomorrow's videos uploaded and ready to go as well, with one of them being Home Free's, 9 to 5 (Yes Live, and yes it's the right version... I hope). If anybody is interested in seeing my reaction to Yours and Seven Bridge Road, let me know, or simply like this. I'm worried about the flack I'll get, since low audio got me a comments section filled with grief as it is. Hi Dan, thank you again for entertainment and joy. I‘m struggeling with pain today, so it‘s greatly appreciated. It‘s great that you like this one. The Oak Ridge Boys are huge in the country world. Home free said on several occasions that this collab with them gave them so much credibility in the country world, so it was a huge thing for them. And it‘s just a really fun song. Ps: nice new look! 😉

Oak Ridge Boys had a hit with Elivira with all rage being the low bass......and of course they reached out to HF to do this collab and took it to another level...they are fans of HF and have toured together as well as have another colab. There was also a colab with Kenny Rodgers "Children go where I send thee", be sure to watch them speaking at the end to find out how that colab happened.

Well I'm Canadian, also I'm a little younger. Even at 34, growing up in house of Country and Southern Gospel, this was never it. And myself, because of what my parents made me listen to as a kid, I went in the opposite direction. I was all about rock, contemporary rock at the time, and growing up in the 90s, while classic rock may have intersected with Oak Ridge Boys, a lot of what I was exposed to would have been Alternative or even Grunge by the standard. I mean, really if you aren't looking or aren't exposed to something, you're not going to find it... especially with popculture. If there is no cross section between genres, there are artists you just may never discover because you have no interest to discover them. So yeah, its easy to say as someone who is well aware, or a fan of, or just grew up with an artist or group. It's easy for them to say, you must have lived under a rock. Because they are or were a part of their life in some form. But interests, tastes, and even location matters. I mean Tennessee means nothing to me. I'm Nova Scotian. There are plenty of Canadian groups that I am constantly surprised when people say they've never heard of them. I mean if I ask 10 people if they know who The Tragically Hip or Gord Downie are, 9 of them aren't going to have a clue.

It seems I'm one of the few, but I hadn't heard of the Oak Ridge Boys before I saw this either - British, and with no particular exposure to country music. It's so much fun, though, and they are obviously very talented and welcoming to Home Free as up and comers. If you watch Home Free's Meet in the Middle, which I hope you do one day, you'll see Austin has the signed shirt from this video framed and on display in his house.

Man, I love The Oaks! If Tim is a Bass, Richard is a BASS. Mr. Sterban definitely doesn’t have the upper range Tim does, but his lower chest voice is way stronger than Tim’s. Glad you liked this song. The Oak Ridge Boys and home free are really good together. As pointed out they did a Christmas song together along with Jeffrey East and it is really really good. They also, at about the same time did a Christmas song with Alabama (Christmas In Dixie) .Another older group that consist of three cousins, Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry and Jeff Cook. They started in 1969 and a big success from the 1980's and on. If you do watch them later, you will notice that Jeff Cook is not really singing much, he has developed parkinson's, but does go to shows when he can. Also there is a....Making of Christmas in Dixie with Alabama...with Austin, Tim and Darren Rust (who puts the music together for HF). It is about 9 1//2 minutes long, that is interesting if you want to check it out in your spare time. I think you will like it a lot. Well I rambled on and will give you a breather. LOL! Thanks again Dan.

Well, again, if you spend your life avoiding exactly this kind of music, you aren't going to be familiar with a lot of artists that perform in the genre. It's like rhyming off contemporary hip-hop artists for somebody that doesn't like hip-hop. Chances are, the names I'm listing are going to go in one ear and out the other.

Always encourage ya to listen to the original ... if nothing else, it sets the stage to what yer about to hear; staying true to the original but HF being who they are - they change it up a bit so not to be a copy :) and not to stray too far - that honor and respect thing again. These direct collaborations are awesome btw. For example -- Dropping back several vids :) ... on yer "American Pie" reaction, I became absent minded, omitting my thought/comment about... When you had commented about the beat/percussion not "meshing" with the bass line - old original vs new modern! Don M, on interview .... Keeping it the same but mix it up, adding in flavor. OK, my thought -- Classics (iconic) need something original to "stay" that way, "familiar" -- other parts can be re-arranged, added to re-new. For me, it worked brilliantly. I do remember when it was a hit being played on AM radio (although barely). Then, with Garth Brooks' Central Park Concert, special guest Don McLean, brought it all back for me -- then came HF's collab with Don.
@DanFromHali
@DanFromHali 3 жыл бұрын
I 100% agree. I don't think I meant not meshing with the bass line was meant to be negative. I loved that song, and enjoyed how the percussion was modernized to fit in with the classic sound. I think if you are going to redo a song like this, especially a song as well loved as American Pie... (Even if you are doing it with Don), you should add in enough originality to separate it from the original. Otherwise it can just come off as an emulation. Home Free and Dong slayed that song together. Also I think I'm going to react to a couple Oak Ridge Boys songs, because I really dug their sound here.

@@DanFromHali Awesome. I hadn't seen it before I saw HF's, so I had to go check it out after someone mentioned the homage. It makes it all the funnier. Might be worth rewatching to refresh your memory if it's been awhile or you've only seen it once or twice. It's definitely one of their "Video is silly, vocals are still amazingly brilliant" productions. A lot of reactors get confused by those for some reason, like they can't conceive of a song being perfectly sung but still being done for the humor. "I Swear" and "Never Gonna Give You Up" are their most recent examples. They're both so on point on the vocals and so completely cheesy on the video. You'd think on "I Swear" once someone has clocked what Adam Rupp is up to, that would be abundantly clear...
