The Philippines has vast deposits of gold. But much of it is mined by children. They alone are slender enough to dive deep into self-dug tunnels, through swamps or down to the seabed. The highly dangerous undertaking puts their lives at risk.
All over the country, families are digging for gold in thousands of small-scale mines without supervision or controls: men, women and children, all hoping for a few nuggets that they can sell for a handful of pesos.
In the swamps in the center of the country, 13-year-old Hato spends hours every day diving for gold in deep water-filled holes. He breathes through a thin plastic tube connected to an air compressor on his father's dugout canoe. One small puncture would mean certain death for the boy.
800 kilometers away, on the island of Leyte, 14-year-old Dennis Junior dives 20 meters deep into the warm, clear waters of the Bohol Sea, using the same improvised breathing equipment. Together with his father, he digs for gold on the seabed, filling sacks with sand and bringing them to the surface. We follow Hato and Dennis Junior in the Philippines as they go about their dangerous work.
According to the NGO Human Rights Watch, thousands of children across the country are helping their parents search for gold.

I am filipino, as a child I did'nt know what child labor was I worked since I can remember. However my parents encouraged me to kept going to school even we can't hardly affords the tuitions fee. Now I'm in a better situation because of education. People comments don't know poverty..I'd been there and I know how it feels but no other options.

I was in Angeles for the first time in April. I've never seen poverty like that of the Philippines. I went out one hot evening and started handing out bottles of water to families (5) till I had nothing for myself. Went back to my hotel room and packed everything I could in a large duffle bag and gave it to a family. I gave one family some change then thought, I could do better than that and gave them 1k pesos. The mother started saying "thank you Jesus". It made me start crying as I walked back to my room. Hit me hard for a few days. I'm already booked to fly back next year and I'm taking all my daughter's old clothes to hand out. I can't save them all but I'm gonna do what I can.

May God bless you and anyone in poverty which is all over the world. Some are worse than others for sure, much worse. But I pray to God 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 that all children gets the education they need and food in their bellies everyday, both are essential if they want to grow up and not have to work like this. If possible send your children to school and break the cycle of child labor, so that they all get an education and if they decide to have children their children will have a better life. I SAW A COMMENT WHERE THE MORE CHILDREN YOU HAVE THEN YOU HIT THE LOTTERY. I HOPE THIS ISN'T TRUE. IF IT IS STOP HAVING CHILDREN TO GO TO DO THE WORK THAT THE PARENTS SHOULD BE DOING.

I used to work in construction growing up in Mexico and I can say most times there are no other options, I had to work so my family could get food and afford basic stuff. It was not as extreme as this documentary but it was child work anyway. Countries need to invest more in their youth but sadly that's among the last things in their list. In Mexico, most of the social programs get lost in the burocratic apparatus and the pockets of crooked politicians.

Alongside my 3 brothers, I helped my parents build our house. And it started when I was 8. And yes this was Belgium in the 70’s. Never as dangerous as in this video, but with dangers nonetheless. However, I never saw this as child labour, not even now. It was the only option of my family at that time; my parents simply didn’t have the money. In my case, I learned a lot in the process, useful for the rest of my life. In the Philippines, the challenge is similar, but on a different scale. Not doing this is simply no food or education. It’s all good to officially forbid this, but then the authorities need to facilitate an alternative. And clearly they don’t - or can’t. So this will remain a reality, and none of our western morality will change this.

It's all down to corruption and exploitation. Notice how the further down that gold line, people were living more and more comfortable. Those 2 women talking about how its illegal and parents are at fault didn't look anywhere near as poor as those others. If this was being done in the USA, those people wouldnt have to send their kids to work, they'd be paid fairly for their gold.

Most of us in the west don't know what poverty is. Even some of our poorest peoples have a roof over their head and access to so much. Also, these are small family run operations and no less dangerous than the family farms around the world where family's children are just as much risk but are nonetheless allowed to work. The child labour they should be focused on are the companies that make their money by forcing children to work in their sweat shopse.

This stuff look like stories you hear from the California gold rush. Iirc, this kind of manual mining was already done in ancient Rome thru open pits & even then, child & slave labor was prevalent for the same reasons. I am moving to the Philippines when my wife retires. Before seeing this part of the plan retiring in the Philippines is to take money from what I save by living there to help kids attend school and hopefully if possible pay for college for a few who couldn't otherwise. My wife grew up in poverty there and being able to go to school as a child was very difficult for her. She said her grandmother gave her fruit from her garden to sell and helped so she could go to school but could not go to college. Education is one path out of this and can help the following generations. When she worked as a foriegn worker she sent money home to educate her siblings. Her siblings who got an education are now successful and their kids are doctors, nurses and lawers etc.

So many ignorant people in the comment section, they don't understand poverty. Literally have no choice but to help their parents so they can survive. Also none of the parents are making any profit by "trying to use the kids," they're doing this to survive, i know cause both my parents had it rough growing up in the Philippines too, and because harsh survival conditions like this is common throughout the country.

I understand poverty better than you . If you are poor you don't create more mouths to feed . If you don't understand that then you arn't showing a good reflection of those people . Your plight is nobody elses fault but the parents before them , don't blame other people and other countries for that .

@@tabularasa7775 First, though I agree that a child's plight is the parents' fault, your statement "if you are poor you don't create more mouths to feed," tells me you don't understand poverty better than me at all. Secondly, no one is blaming the kids and other countries for the unfortunate situation. Finally, you can't judge a parent entirely for deciding to have a kid while poor, because there are many factors that influence their decision.

As a parent, my choices in life will surely affect my child, be wise.

I was young when I started working; I didn't yet understand what child labor meant. But perhaps the concept of knowing that we were poor gave me the idea to help, even just a little, for my family. I guess I was just lucky because my mom pushed me to finish my education. But compared to these children, the work they are doing is very dangerous. I don't know what the Philippine government plans to do about this situation. I hope the government pays attention to this and creates programs to help the children go to school and provide their parents with jobs that have sufficient wages for their families.

I really hope for these children to finish their study no matter how long would it takes. Its the only way to get a better life (for poor Filipino like us) I had been to that same difficult situation. But I was encouraged by my family to finish my study. I was also determined. I prepared myself for the worst case scenario that it could take me 6 to 8 years to finish my bachelors degree. Fortunately, I was able to get it in 4 years. But with very low grades. I only focus on one subject which is important on getting me a job. I didn’t have time to review my lessons as I also work after class. I start working at the age of 7. I used to hunt mud crabs at night. On the weekend, worked at the butchery. During college (on weekend and school break) , I worked as manual labor at the construction project of my professor. Together with my classmate, we dug the foundation, mixed and poured concrete, sometimes we swam to the river to collect sand. That was fun😅.

This is terrifying. What brave boys. I grew up on a dairy farm in the US. I think it is important for kids to help the family ... not at the cost of education (for those who can do that). I think some US children now grow up without any chores or responsibilities and now are becoming adults who don't want to work. ( To be fair, they are also joining a workforce where employees are treated like crap. I try to always support the independent businesses of younger people.) We were poor and I grew up knowing the importance of a dollar. We are currently governed by people who never had to struggle for food or shelter. Why people persist in thinking the rich who have no clue how to survive should become president is beyond me. With the debt our country has, we need a single mother who works 3 jobs to become president.
