Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching. Today, Mike and I use our Miller Industries, Century 1150R rotator towing and recovery unit to perform a "controlled roll" of an overturned "frameless" end dump trailer. The extended cylinder poses more problems for us the the rigging and up-righting of the trailer. Anyhow, there is a lot of cool information in this video, and the roll went very smoothly, in my opinion. I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!
My common analogy, "there are many ways to reach 10". I could have approached this (any) job several different ways. The approach method is important, but more important is achieving the desired result safely.
Went back to my traditional intro for now. The new Intro didn't go over very well. I appreciate everyone's input. Thanks again and God bless.
Again, a very special thank you to all my viewers, family, and friends who having taken the time to show their support. May God bless and protect you all!!!

Unless they replaced the A-Frame in-situ, they can't hook to it (the A-Frame has the King Pin and without it, you can't connect a Tractor for towing), they'd have to lift it and set it on a Low-Boy Trailer...

@@HappilyHomicidalHooligan In this case we see Ron already has the risers on his lift bar so he will back up to the front of the box, run chains to the bar at the dollys, tie in the red air line to release the brakes, lift and tow the hundred yards to where they want it parked.

The frameless end dumps are inherently unstable, I'm surprised you don't get more calls for incidents like this.
@Believeorreason
@Believeorreason 2 жыл бұрын
thing is, live bottoms are becomign more and more common now in the industry to avoid exactly this, as they finally are load effencit and obviously don't have to worry about power lines, or unstable ground when unloading, here in Ontario Canada live bottoms are seen just as much as end dumps on most sites.
@Pesmog
@Pesmog 2 жыл бұрын
Frameless end dumps are banned in many yards here in the UK and we rarely see them now. I witnessed the aftermath of a similar incident about 15 years ago. When they tip to unload, tests have shown they often shift over 50% of the load & trailer weight onto the trailers rearmost axle which is then beyond the tires safe load limit and the tire only has to have a small imperfection and they pop, and tip the trailer on its side. The other two common mechanisms of failure leading to rollover are ground subsidence due to so much weight going through one trailer axle and axle spring breakage for similar reasons. Thankfully our family company never purchased any and with the few trailers like this that remain, the receiving yards usually insist on having a large (30 ton plus) excavator hoe arm dug deep into the load from behind when tipping as an extra precaution against a rollover. Someone told me that it is very difficult to get insurance for them here due to their reputation. Somewhere, I still have a couple of letters from large receiving yards saying they will deny access to trucks towing this type of trailer.
@JackMacLupus
@JackMacLupus 2 жыл бұрын
Even with a full frame below i see FAR too many roll overs from such trailers here in Europe. It usually happens when the ground is uneven, or a part of the load gets stuck on the front end of the trailer. Usually then the cylinder gives in and the trailer tips over. This could have happened here too if it whouldnt have been a frameless trailer.
@pan1naro
@pan1naro 2 жыл бұрын
Not the first time we have seen this. I think there is missing sensors on the trailer that can generate a warning, as that trailer lifts and the load does not shift it becomes inherently unstable, the driver, poor guy has no feedback telling him/her the truck is getting into a dangerous state. This is not difficult to solve from a sensor perspective. I think what happens here is that some loads absorb water to some degree, this makes them act like a cohesive material, too much cohesion and the load ceases to move under gravity as the trailer elevates.
@dross7137
@dross7137 Жыл бұрын
1. I am still amazed that the material straps can handle such heavy loads - we always think of chains for strength, yet the straps do the job without the damage. Amazing. 2. Thanks for the fast-forward time-lapse at the end [53:48] - it is fun. (I have to admit, there have been times when I went to that point first and then went back to see the entire "show" at normal speed.) Yeah, it's fun and instructive to see what went on.

I spent 6 mo with an old style ~32' end-dump hauling wet toxic ash from the regional incinerator to a "closed" dump that was just topping up before capping. There was a lot of sinkage on the surface causing swaying even when the trailer was down and flat. Then, when you were fully extended dumping and had to move forward ,the truck-trailer would sway wildly maybe up to 20º. Scared the "ash" out of me. Later on the contract shifted to side dump b-trains which were a lot more stable. I never lost the trailer, but it did happen at least once. I really feel for that driver and God bless frameless breakaway a-frames.
