The Somoa Peninsula is about 1 mile made by ten miles long and is near the city of Eureka in Humboldt County. Today we check out the Samoa Dunes Recreation Area. And we get a close look at the Samoa Bunkers, some decommissioned bunkers from WW II.
Unfortunately today we are experiencing rather unhealthy air quality due to wildfire smoke from several nearby and far away forest fires.

We had a lot of smoke in Southern Oregon until the rain came on Sunday. So good to step outside and breathe fresh air again. Hope the air clears soon for you in Northern California. I used to live near Seal Beach CA where they had the Naval Weapons Facility. There were many areas where you could see bunkers. My Mom tells stories of when she was young and lived in Bell, CA, during WW II, and at night they would be instructed to keep blinds closed to prevent Japanese air surveillance from seeing the lights. The threats were real for that generation.

I understand about the brewing time. I accidentally brewed my light roast coffee over five minutes. Almost didn’t drink it. Lots of sugar and whole milk. Too bad the bunkers were sealed off. I would’ve sat in it and enjoyed watching the tide flowing in and out, day dreaming.

Great area! Definitely going to have to explore this with my dog. Have you tried one of the camp stove wind screens? They are very handy and fold up flat so they don’t consume a lot of space. It would allow you to keep your door open. Great video!

I am hard-of-hearing too. Self inflicted. Flipped my 97 Tacoma over a median and rolled it, in 98, got thrown out of the driver side, no seat belt, no airbag going off, severe head trauma, fractured skull, bleeding out my ears and nose, but survived. Conductive hearing loss with chronic tinnitus.

Were you talking about the bunkers in Salt Creek County Park west of Port Angeles? They built these bunkers after Japan bombed our west coast. One place was near Santa Barbara, another near Ft Stevens in Oregon. The bunkers at Salt Creek was to watch in case Japan tried entering through the straits

Excellent! I love your setup. And your storage bag looks very interesting! I'm from this area. I remember the smoke from the fires. So sad. The bunkers were used as armory bunkers. I can't remember if they had any defensive artillery. Wind is a part of life on the coast. Lol. It could be fog coming in. We're prone to daily fog also 😊

Unfortunately there aren’t any reliable years. The 2.4L Tigershark engines are very unreliable. There is a recall for the worst offenders. I’ve lost count of the number of recalls, I think there have been seven on my van. Although a couple were software updates to help correct some of the engine problems. There was never a fix for the major engine problems, it seems to be luck of the draw. So even if the engine is replaced, the same massive oil consumption is likely to happen again. There are a few ok ProMaster City vans, mine is one. But chances aren’t good of getting a decent one. At 90K, my van feels like a 25 year old vehicle. Very little power and uses copious amounts of oil.

Hello Scott, i was excited to see you did a video just 40 minutes ago. I didnt know that they had to have bunkers and rounds of ammunition there to hold the fort from the coast of California. Wish some BLM people would come out and paint over the graffiti. Its a shame that people dont understand it is vandalism to damage the bunkers in that way. But its a pretty barrier island and the sand dunes are interesting. Is it a combination of salt and sand from the ocean? Your coffee hobby and van life culture inspire and help keep me centered and living a little bit of your dream. Perhaps you can visit this BLM chain again when its not infused by smoke from the nearby fires. Love the sound of the roaring ocean. It's really breathtaking . Do you think you might have an electric bicycle one day? It might be a good way to get around when your short of breath like you have been recently. Loved the tour Stay away from the contaminated air. It can damage your lungs and take weeks to heal. Do you have an inhaler to clear your lungs? You can also clear your lungs by breathing in over a pan of hot water and let the steam from the hot water cleanse your lungs. what kind of mineral water are you drinking? Alexa can help you watch your time for making your coffee. I use her for my wake up alarm and also for my shopping and errands. Im glad you like the coffe you purchased from the bulk binns. I have started to drink light roast when i can find it. When your tired rest. Your body will tell you what it needs. Thankyou for the interesting content ❤

The bunker you showed the glimpses in of were storage. Wonder if it was part of the Niki missal system on West Coast like the ones in San Francisco’s Pacific side, or Marin Headlands. The coop in Arcata was built first years ago. I’m glad they expanded to Eureka.

It would be interesting to know how the Samoa peninsula and Manila got to be named, there's a small town 'more like a community' out there called Manila heading north back to Arcata. And the 'Arcata Kinetic Sculpture Race', held over Memorial Day weekend, begins in Arcata, heads into the Samoa Sand Dunes, then continues south and ends up at the finish line in the quaint little town of Ferndale. You might like to capture that annual event for a video someday. It's a once in a lifetime experience !!....take care and travel on !!

@@StaticCamperVan This is how I see it through WW2 Era eyes, it's a likely place in case of invasion from sea, flatter likely than surrounding coastline, less population to get in the way. So an invading force comes in their ships and if there's American reinforcement there to stop the invasion the invaders soften up the defense with a barrage of shells from their ships before the landing forces hit the "beaches". The bunkers likely held artillery shells to shell the invading ships or landing forces as they left the ships. There are likely machine gun emplacements left there also that were too be used in the event the force made it close to the "beach" and also anti-aircraft emplacements.

I love how you find the secluded beautiful beaches. Wonderful. It's amazing how dumb people are about basic things like driving on sand. Maybe survival skills should be taught in schools. Me too - I didn't even know what a riptide was until I got stuck in one! You can try tea tree oil to improve breathing and prevent breathing in too many toxins.

Well, after being indoctrinated by months of watching your videos, I finally gave in and bought a large bottle of Yellow Bird (Blue Agave). It’s as good as you say! I let my daughter and teen-aged grandsons try some and they liked it, too. Thanks for the recommendations for the YB and the Wildling Shoes (love mine) from Germany. Have a good day!
