Alistair Overeem was expected to face Antônio Silva in the semifinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix at this event. However, on July 18 it was announced that Overeem refused to compete at this event, claiming that a toe injury would prevent him from being ready in time. Alistair Overeem was subsequently removed from the tournament and released by the company, he was replaced by Daniel Cormier.
Despite Cormier's reservations about competing in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix due to inexperience, height and reach disadvantage over the rest of the field, he nonetheless entered, and faced Antônio Silva on only five weeks' notice on September 10, 2011, at Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov, replacing Alistair Overeem. In a shocking upset, he won the fight via KO (punches) in the first round, catching Silva with multiple hits to the jaw, causing him to collapse, and then finishing with two hammer blows to the face of the grounded Silva before the referee could stop the fight. Cormier later revealed that he had broken his hand during the fight.

What’s crazy about this fight and DC’s performance is that Bigfoot was just coming off that nasty win over Fedor and had a LOT of hype coming into the Grand Prix whereas Cormier was a replacement fighter with no hype and yet he steamrolled EVERYONE in the entire tournament and is now a UFC HOFer and former LHW and HW champion. It was amazing watching his entire career, he deserves his legend status.

Yeah man, his clinch work and Alex's running was I think what solidified his razor thin win over Gus in my eyes. Could have been a draw in my eyes but when Alex ran around like he did and then DC does his clinching, it's kind of no wonder they gave it to DC on octagon control if nothing else. It is simply insane seeing him grab the bigger guys and just go to work on the inside. Like you say, it's often forgotten how well DC did in the clinch against Jones in fight 1.

@DARK HOUND At the time of the Heavyweight strikeforce grandprix DC was practically an unknown fighter. I remember watching and being like who is this dude? He was actually a replacement. Considering that Emelianenko, Big foot Silva, Arlovski,Kharitonov, Overeem and, Barnett were the big names. Cormier came out of nowhere. He absolutely manhandled Josh Barnett for the title. It definitely was an entertaining tournament. To see a (literal) unknown plow through everyone was amazing. Ive been a fan of DC since.

DC is the Man! I was such a fan when he showed up in the UFC. I always cheered for him because to me he was the talented underdog. He was ALWAYS shorter and had less reach then his opponents, yet he schooled mostly everyone except for: "Mr.Cheat-Church- Self-Absorbed-Entitlement Boy-Jones" ~Besides that dude, DC was a wrecking Machine and people underestimate how good his striking was. They always talk about his body slam lift's, and his wrestling but his fight i.q. and approach and striking skills is honestly the icing on the cake to combine with those wrestling skills because it made him so dangerous 💪🏼🤘🏼🥊🥋🥊💥💤😵😴🤕 (BTW: DC looked up at the clock ⌚ and he was commentating O'malley on his UFC new record setting fight with O'Malley's striking abilities and 3 round output. It should be a perfect example to DC that it's a beneficial tactic to utilize your striking output impact and energy consumption. Yet DC thought O'Malley might be doing it because maybe he wanted to get out of there when in reality, O'malley was having the highest level of striking output in a 3 Rd. 135lb fight so I'm pretty sure O'malley proved he could stay in there, fight with high level endurance and stamina without gassing out and bring unable to function. He showed he could fight going backwards, it's honestly an amazing highlight reel of the diversity and capabilities of O'Malley's skills. Most explosive strikers would of gassed out or something but O'malley has so many feints, diverse striking selection, timing changes, stance switches, push kicks, ability to punch hard going any direction, and calm flowing abstract manner of rolling with the fight instead of forcing anything too much. ) I just think DC could relate to O'malley instead of his first thought that was incorrect. It's okay tho, DC went back and showed his appreciation and respect for O'Malley's skills after that moment plus he did this awesome breakdown of O'Malley's insane combo in slow motion explanation, I think it was a 12 strike combo. It's insane

Кормье часто называют американским Фёдором Емельяненко, они похожи по телосложению и немного по манере боя. Но посмотрите как легко и аккуратно Кормье потушил Бугфуда. Федору надо было тоже так вести бой.
