I think the interviewer is wrong in a few hypothesis and assumptions, which would put off DDL and PTA. They do have a slight moment of silence and hesitation sometimes, which is telling.

The guy is just on another level when it comes to acting so these questions are way too simple.

I think it's the opposite of this - a large part of his process is unconscious, not deliberate, thought out choices - if a magician worked this way his show would be a distaster.

Its more complex than that. He seemed pretty content at the end of the movie that Paul had his own Oil production and was making a decent living for himself. His contempt for both his son and Eli is more complicated in my opinion

@@NickBigsmoke Paul is someone like Daniel. Paul did what was necessary for him to earn money and become successful. So did Plainview. So in a sense, Plainview and Paul are similar. And Plainview knows he made Paul. He gave him the chance to become successful. But Eli and H.W were not Like Daniel. H.W was raised by a wealthy man. He merely had anything to worry about in his Childhood. He was in good hands. And Eli was a fraud. He used his cheap tricks to influence poor people into believing in his false gimmicks. So clearly, Daniel believes these two are lesser Than him.

The questions seemed pretty good, she was kind of annoying in the same way ALL interviewers of celebrity are. He was never really a theatre actor I don't think so its likely that he or Paul aren't comfortable in front of a crowd.

He's not somebody who has ever seemed particularly comfortable in interviews let alone a room like this. Sadly I always find too many interviewers go to 'interview school' and learn a very particular way of asking questions. Anyway, I didn't think she was 'too' bad, or them either.

I don’t think that’s down to him being particularly shy or anxious about talking in front of people and crowds, (I could be wrong of course) but I think his nervous energy comes from the questions and interviewer themselves. He doesn’t like talking about his process, he’s very careful on how he talks about it and what words to use. He’s often been flakey about questions surrounding his process in character work because he claims that he can never find the words to explain it. He also really doesn’t like or answer questions about his personal life. He is very guarded about all of that and so I feel he brings a trepidatious energy to these interviews. The proof of all of this is in how few and far between he did them. It may also be the fact he doesn’t like speaking in front of crowds of course. We will never truly know.

Check his interview with Oprah, there he is very open, relaxed and happy.

I'd like to take the train known as the Cannonball to Hooterville with Daniel and spend a weekend with him at the Shady Rest Hotel ! Just to sit on the front porch in the evening, having some drinks and discussing everything under the sun with him would be heavenly !

Adorable, huh??? One of the most endearing things about DDL is the way every one of his characters-even the darker ones-touch someone in the scene with compassion. The way he strokes H.W.’s face and kisses him seems like a bit of a window into DDL as a father in real life. Never mind the shooting and clubbing and knife throwing...DDL always comes across to me as SUCH a giving soul.

I think you're bang on the money bud. Any of the times he loses his shit it's when he feels abandoned so it's very likely he had an absentee father or dare I postulate was even adopted or orphaned himself. It's interesting how he defends and seems to like Mary Sunday but then again it's also a power play against the father. People always say how evil or "psychotic" the character is when he clearly isn't he cries multiple times, when sending HW away, when he reads his fake brothers diary, definitely not psychopath behavior. It's just a lot more complicated than I think critics boiled it down to which is part of why it's such a fascinatingly layered story, and a very tragic one. As for the greed I wrestle with this theme myself because he doesn't seem like a cheapskate but he does seem to think it can fill the void. Part of me feels like it was more about the drive and the megalomaniacal pursuit of power, rather than the physical aspects of just owning things or having money. Like he feels so barren and incomplete inside, he is highly suspect of people so refuses to be vulnerable which pushes them away and makes this weird self fulfilling prophecy for him of how people are just wasted carbon.

pretty much - he's a character who started out life with plenty of reason to be hateful and malicious and then the story walks us through each little moment that just continued to pile on until he succumbs to his own personal hell when he reaches the culmination of all of his life's ambition...... "i'm finished" that last line really nails it.

Yeah, but he’s nothing short of delightful. He really is trying so hard NOT to come off as self absorbed, when every question thrown at him is only to do with methods and intentions. He’s an artist. Period. “I don’t like to explain myself.”

DDL talked and talked but never really said anything. Not impressed.

Daniel and Leo are no Percy Helton...but they are truly gifted actors !
