No one likes their privacy more than Daniel Day-Lewis. So, although he is widely famed and considered "The Father of Acting", very few people know how strange the actor really is. Day-Lewis has gone beyond medical extremes to give life-changing performances. Although his method-acting ways earned him the record-breaking victory of three Oscar awards, they also left him in a consuming depression that forced him to officially retire from acting.
0:00 Day-Lewis is comfortable in his hermit-like lifestyle
2:09 Actor wanted to “retain a sense of isolation”
4:34 Did he quit acting forever?

He's a little bit mad but it's ok. That's why he is unique. (He received psychiatric treatment in '94; this old interview reveals Daniel's hidden sides, but without condemning him.) Shortly after Daniel won his first Oscar for My left foot, I was at my mother's house when she asked me if I remembered him. I wondered what she was talking about, and she told me how when I was a small child, the Day - Lewis family had rented a flat from my grandparents in Sussex, right next door to their own house. They had the flat for a year or so, and Daniel and I were about the same age, so we played together regularly. In all honesty, I don't remember him at all, but it was a long time ago.

@@ccc4102 Greetings and all the best from southeastern New England, USA, where it's 1:34 a.m. Edit: He's not only a great actor, often called the greatest in the English-speaking world, but he also seems to be an exemplary human being. Thank you.

Somewhere I read that, he used to cover up his one eye and look through another to prepare for the role of Bill the butcher in Gangs if New York.

I don't understand why this is considered strange. Acting is a profession like any other, but people seem to think that because its show business, actors aren't entitled to a private life.

I went to drama school in London to become an actor. The methodologies we get taught signify the monumental dedication Daniel Day-Lewis applied to his craft with every role which takes a lot of time, effort and concentration. He is what I would call “a master of his craft” in the world of acting

You can tell by just one look that this gentleman is nothing short of a genius. And I don't think strange is the right adjective. Rather self-directed, individualistic, creative and assertive. Which is indeed rare in this day and age, but not strange.

Daniel Day-Lewis comes from a very distinguish Family closer to the Queen of United Kingdom. Also I believe he was already born with that natural talent. The result = 3 Oscars as a Leading Role Actor, which is so hard to achieve. So yeah! He is a Genius!!!

I think we are so used to having access that we forget they're people too. He might still be eccentric if he was a mechanic or worked in an office. He can just afford to be an isolated eccentric.
