It's a bit weird to believe that he (Daniel Day-Lewis) would go on to become one of the most acclaimed actors of his generation when he had such a small role here. Well, he nevertheless nailed it, and it just proves that you gotta start somewhere
@arul207 жыл бұрын
It's thought provoking. I always felt bad for the small time, two bit extras in movies. However this proves that you don't have to be a small player or a nobody forever. This applies to life too. How inspiring. Thanks DDL!
@arkuis6 жыл бұрын
He did not quite nail this role, he still, like a great many actors, failed to get the South African accent right. Apart from generally overworking the accent he seems to have gone for something between an Afrikaans accent and an English South African accent. He should have just gone for an English South African accent given that the scene was set in what is now KwaZulu-Natal and his mother was clearly English. Both are very hard accents to get right. I suspect he would do a better job at it today now that there are more modern voice coaching techniques and he has matured into a truly outstanding actor.
@siwakeman12666 жыл бұрын
arkuis yeah I agree, but to be fair he would of been a day player here and had little time to research or prepare, especially pre internet and KZfaq where you have resources at your disposal, and I doubt he would of been given a dialect coach or afforded one for such a small role.

For Western Standards Gandhi is a phenomenon but for Indian Standards ,he is just another saint. He just practiced one or two principles of our philosophy religiously and shook the Empire where sun never set.We may have been materialistically lower successful than West but morally Indian philosophy has been a guiding light for world since ages.

You can tell he was quite a confident actor here - compared to the other 2, he was definitely underplaying really nicely. Like at 1:21 I would've expected the dude throwing and catching the rock to have stopped to give the focus to DDL, but instead, he is moving an awful lot, as if he really needed to call attention to himself for his really short screen time. Also love the way DDL says 'nothing' without breaking eye contact - something a lot of extras might've overacted. THIS IS COOL.

@beerstein71379 ай бұрын
Richard Attenborough tried his best to ensure that every South African bad person in this movie has an Afrikaans accent. .Agree, this was a bad attempt. Also, the background in the movie shows Natal indicating that was supposed to take place in the last outpost of the British Empire.

Letter ( in his own handwriting ) by Revd. CF Andrews - written in 1915 or so. Revd Andrews , a towering figure in India's freedom struggle ( Revd ' Charlie ' in the great movie " Gandhi " ) , was originally sent from England to take over as our College 's 4 th Principal. But Revd Andrews , instead , worked / lobbied for the appointment of Mr. Sushil Kumar Rudra for the post ( most probably ,a first such level elevation for an Indian in any Missionary Institution in India ). This Recommendation letter / character certificate was for the benefit of my Nanaji , Late Lala Jagan Nath ( later Masterji ) , a Stephanian from Jagadhri town( now in Haryana ) For the letter please click the link ttps://facebook.com/groups/britishindiafamilyhistory/?multi_permalinks=2542599039365930¬if_id=1612685579056921¬if_t=feedback_reaction_generic&ref=notif
