Daniel Day-Lewis is interviewed by Juliette Hohnen on the late MTV movie program The Big Picture in 1993 about 'In the Name Of The Father'. Typical thoughtful DDL...just try to ignore Chris Connelly. I know I did.

People still cannot accept that our government were capable of such bigotry,brutality and injustice!What Gerry and his family and friends suffered was abhorrant!The government knew they had the wrong men almost from the start but it was easier to let them rot in prison than right there wrongs.I pray Gerry and all the others wrongly convicted find some peace in their lives

Believe me it's definitely not the last act of bigotry, brutality, injustice and double standards employed by British government.

If the English/British nationalists could get away with it today they would have Alex salmond and his SNP buddies hanging from the gallows, you have to laugh at the abuse the Scottish nationalists get, the English don't know how to vent their frustration as years ago they would have sent an army up there and killed them of force them off their land and send them to the colonies

This is an awesome movie, my 12 yr. daughter watched it with me day after Thanksgiving day 2016. I'm 37% British and 3% Irish and she was so upset over the injustice to the father in this movie and now she wants to be a lawyer. I, on thee other hand want her to be a dentist.

@123paddymc Yes. Your comment makes sense, and I'm an Englishman living in the Republic. Now explain why there are bonfires with pictures of the pope being burned, please. I lived in the North for a while, but I got sick of the sight of my own flag, and decided to move to where the people are more decent.

kind of a trip hearing him mention "Shakespeare in Love" with Julia Roberts in it. That shit never happened.
@drinkwater3196 жыл бұрын
Julia Roberts wasn’t in Shakespeare in Love, it was Gwynth Paltrow. For him not to know that about an Oscar winning film, not to mention the writer, marvellous
@meropale5 жыл бұрын
This program is from the early 90s. Shakespeare in Love was not released until late 1998. Julia Roberts was originally cast in the role of Viola but withdrew when she could not convince Daniel Day-Lewis to play opposite her in the movie. So, what he says makes sense for the time. Gwyneth Paltrow hadn't even made Seven by this point.

@clem6593. Understandable!!!! i think i shall have to make time & watch "Gangs of new york" again. Truly Epic!!!!! Do you know if DDL has ever done a commentary on any of his movies? i doubt it (sadly). on the "Gangs" commentary, scorsese tells of how he had to convince Daniel to take the role. DDL being busy in italy learning how to make shoes lol. TRUE STORY!!!

You can view videos of the real Gerry Conlon talking about what he went through when he was first arrested and compare it to what they showed in the movie, and they're completely different. The movie comes as him basically being mistreated when in reality, he was tortured. The movie is clearly about showing how miscarriages of justice can and do occur in the western world.

My favourite actor is al pacino then danny close with gene hackman aswell but i dont think al pacinos best acting was godfather or scarface but i prefer him in donnie brasco just like i prefer Daniel day in this film and gangs of new york you couldnt get more so far between parts than they two films from Daniel.

yup, it sure is about provocation...they're marching 'peacefully' but it pisses of the nationalist/republicans and some (young, immagure guys) get so riled up they start throwing things and turn it into a riot and it all gets blamed on them, not the provocators.

@123paddymc if they don't want to piss off nationalists, why have they so often insisted on marching through republican neighborhoods? ... hmm... a real head-scratcher.
@life2lifele5515 жыл бұрын
why do the majority of layolists march? because they see the reaction it gets every year within nationlist communities. If people did protest, didnt object and honestly didnt care i assure you in time these marching would stop. its all about provocation and reaction

The British released the prisoners though so how pro-republican can that be?
@sarahnewt15 жыл бұрын
such ignorance of history - 0:41 no research at all.....
@jonoessex11 жыл бұрын
"It' insane to describe the film as pro-republican". Well it's written by an ex-IRA prisoner and it's about the Brutalisation of Irish people at the hands of the British. I'd say that was pretty pro-republican!
@jonoessex164310 жыл бұрын
The fact that they released the prisoners does not prove it is not a pro-republican film. The whole film is about an Irishman and his suffering at the hands of the British. That makes it a republican film in my view. What is the point of this film if not to stir up Irish nationalist/ anti-British sentiment?
