Daniel Day-Lewis, an actor known for his intense character preparation, spent a year studying Abraham Lincoln, America's 16th president, before filming began for Steven Spielberg's Lincoln. After reading more than 100 books, poring over photos and reading Lincoln's speeches aloud, Daniel says, he was able to capture the president's distinctive voice. Watch as he reveals why he turned down the part nine years ago... and what made him finally say yes. Plus, Daniel explains why he believes the voice is "a fingerprint of the soul". Tune in for Oprah's Next Chapter with the Cast of Lee Daniels' The Butler Sunday, August 11th at 9/8c on OWN For more on #nextchapter visit bit.ly/1OPX6ah

The Meticulous Gentleman - Just because Brando pioneered method acting doesn't meant he was the best at it, plus he had a very inconsistent career, and I daresay he has more band films than good films; I believe he is more influential than he was talented, at the end of the day. He was one of the greats, but not anymore by the 80's and 90's. Same deal with Al and Bob, who stopped being relevant in the 2000's and have done everything they can to tarnish their early careers. Daniel Day Lewis is one of the few actors where it's safe to say that every film he has done and every performance he has given has been incredible and timeless. He's also maintained cultural impact and relevance from the 80's up to the 2010's consistently. Robert De Niro is really the only one that's come closest, and you could argue he was better or just as good, but he isn't anymore.

@andrewmair7371 4 жыл бұрын
It’s not “incredible” by any means...🙄 Only in the dear young Western World do we regard humility as rare & difficult to attain. To be ‘gifted’ - talented/capable/focused - doesn’t automatically plunge the recipient headlong into egotism … that would indeed profoundly limit one’s ‘gift’ & it’s perceived ‘use’.

When reading a Lincoln speech we unconsciously adapt a booming deep voice yet writers in the 1800’s who heard Lincoln speak said he had a a high pitched shrill voice. When you think about it is his voice that attributed to him as real is the voice that works. For the mere commoner such as myself it allows one to hear his incredible dialogue yet allows it to be readily accessible to all.

No doubt that DDL is great actor. He is truly electrifying. But the prob with DDL is, he only does such movies and characters, characters which have scope. Can he truly make an inconsequential character great? A character who is not at the centre, who does not has scope as per the script and is inconsequential, can DDL still impress with his portray of that character the same way how he does in There will be blood, Lincoln or No country for old man? As per me, Gary Oldman is the best actor who can do any kind of role. DDL can do magic with a great character, Oldman can do magic with any character.

:D God I love him. I've only seen two of his films ("Gangs of New York" and "Lincoln") but he wowed me. Heck I was terrified oh him after seeing Gangs of New York (mind you I was a little young... about 13 or 14 I believe). But wow. What I would give to meet him.

I keep telling my friends who have never heard of him, you don't realize how great an actor he is until you hear him out of character and realize he's a classic Englishman. Then you think back to There Will Be Blood, Gangs of New York, Lincoln, and countless other non-British accents and realize that he plays the roles better than native speakers.

We do the same with 'our' footballers: we pretend they had Irish grannies to defraud FIFA so that they can play for Ireland. DDL is English, born and raised. They live in Ireland because we allow "artists" to live tax-free. It's no problem at all that DDL is English...we just need to stop lying to ourselves that he's Irish.

And there are American actors who have portrayed Englishmen (John Lithgow as Winston Churchill, most recently for example) better than a brit could have done it. Not really sure what your point is about Daniel doing American's better than an American.

@@joebryant8500 He has an English mother, was born in England, and his father moved to England when he was only two years of age. His father was Cecil Day Lewis who became British Poet Laureate and was a product of the English public school system and Oxbridge. DDL is also a product of the English public school system and is now Sir Daniel day Lewis i.e. A Knight of the British Empire. Aside from his father being born in Ireland it is hard to imagine how he could be any more English. But being Irish to some is a bit like being black. The slightest hint of being Irish or indeed black eg a grandparent and you're Irish or black.
@Kaiserbill99
@Kaiserbill99 4 жыл бұрын
@Your Dad I agree. You only have to look at Peter O'Toole. Born in England with an Irish father and Scottish mother. He always claimed to be Irish, even fabricating the fact that he was born in Ireland when there is documentary proof of being born in Leeds infirmary. He also claimed to have only come to Ireland during the war when in reality the nearest he ever came to Ireland was the occasional holiday. All a bit pathetic but there seems to be this romantic underdog obsession with Ireland among "arty" types that draws them to Ireland. John Hurt once appeared on "Who do you think you are" convinced he had a spiritual attachment to Ireland without any proof to that effect. He was unbelievably disappointed when he was mistaken.

It's like DDL channeled from Lincoln's spirit in the otherworld, all his quirks, characteristics, ideals, powers & his voice, in such an amazingly uncanny fashion, with a mastery that was nothing less than magically spellbinding. Captivating. Transcendent. Totally & wonderfully par for DDL's course. He virtually resurrected that iconic, complex, ultra nationalistic, mid 19th Century NYC lunatic Bill The Butcher, in the process giving one of the greatest cinematic performances of all time, for the ages, & one as unforgettably chilling as it was downright entertaining (his portrayal of Gerry Conlon in The Name of The Father was equally powerhouse caliber, astonishing & praise worthy, one of the best & most riveting of the 1990s!). Every screen character brought to life by that peerless thespian is powerfully compelling, & often electrifying, in an indelibly searing manner. Always brilliant & super dedicated to his craft, DDL is truly one of a kind, a British National Treasure, & a shining Star brighter & more celestial than any in the modern day acting firmament. Just incredibly immersive & passionate, fiery & transformative, mesmerizing & chameleonic, & if not the all time acting Goat than he is close enough to being justified that designation (he'd probably have Lincoln's vote as the finest ever!). Daniel Day Lewis is also a humble class act, an all round real good person. God Bless Him!

I don't think any actor has even came even remotely close to Lincoln and his thought process and still being human and not letting the popularity of being our president and all the ego that can come with that-he still managed to be human about the presidency-no ego,Lewis got him and as exactly as I have always pictured Lincoln to be in my mind. I liked the realness of who Lincoln was-he was like everybody else,just human with a soul Daniel was great!he understood what was needed. Love that!
