I've watched a good number of various "lawn expert" videos, finally stumbling upon your channel, and, I must say, you're the best of the bunch as far as entertainment and enlightenment. I am growing a new lawn from seed at the moment. I went with Rhizomatous Perennial Ryegrass. Sandy soil with compost on top of the seeds. In the areas that didn't get any compost (I ran out) the seeds took longer to germinate and the seedlings are growing half as fast. Using a pH-neutral, screened compost is a game-changer. Don't skip this step. PS. pH test your compost as sometimes they use lime in the composting process and the pH is dangerously high. Especially the trash stuff sold in hardware stores.

Look for an upside down claw with some lateral growth rather than simply upwards like ryegrass. It has pointy tipped blades that narrow into a point at end. It is also more of a lime green as opposed to a dark green. Plus you can usually identify it in hot weather in uk as it goes yellow and dormant rather than staying green like other more drought tolerant plants like ryegrass .

Last year you bought a cassette for the Allett which I think was described as a scarifying cassette but I always thought the spring time cassette was a lawn rake ? I have not seen you using it recently, is that because your AlKo scarifer makes a better job ? Yeah when its composted down and air is allowed to pass through it this kills any seeds, thats why when you build a compost heap you have wooden sides with gaps so the air can get in if you just have solid sides the weed seeds will survive

If you have rotovated you may of brought up dormant seeds buried in the seed bank now they have germinated, when doing this sort of work it would be best advised to rotovate then leave the soil to grow whatever is to grow then spray with roundup then you have a clean canvas for your new seed

Mulching lawnmower might be good too as the mulched grass will break down and help the micro organisms and worms proliferate and they will improve structure. So avoid weed killer if you want healthy soil filled with micro organisms. Brushing in compost once a year like he did here will also help. Compost as opposed to top dressing as top dressing is more solid containing sand so won’t break down so will affect levels
