Yeah it’s actually quite impressive. My other four Diesel engines all need at least a minute of glow plugs at these temperatures, but that 8.3 just doesn’t care. Fires right up.

@@DanielJaegerFilms Yah are 133 Massey Ferguson I'm always amazed how easy it starts up in the freezing cold it could be -5C and first turn of the key it fire's right up so must be a Cummings or Perkins thing.

Ah man, I'm a civic guy, but this sounds so good. I love the way old trucks rumble both when you are sitting in them and when they are driving by. Beautiful machines they are. Plus Turbo sounds. Who could be upset?

At this temp. I'm amazed that it fired within 1 round. Regardless if it kept it up. Most engines you have to crank and crank and then they finally fire. This one fires so quick.

I guess I meant both. A lot of people ask me if it has glow plugs. This one doesn’t have the grid heater either.

That's isn't accurate either. There are some Cummins Engines that have glow plugs

@@countcuda70 and what engine models have them? Ever since the b and c models have existed the only starting aid has been and intake air heater. Older models such as the 855 and k series had either injection as a starting aid. And as far as any other models, I know any isx-isb doesn’t so what does? I’m genuinely curious. Are you referring to Cummins Onan? Those use kubota power plants in the diesel generators, those do have glow plugs, but aren’t Cummins engines.

@@dodgefan1259 Cummins NHC 250 has one. I know a few little engines use them too. Cummins A1400, A1700 and the A2300T usem the also. You are correct about the B and C though

My L10 never missed a beat. For over 8 yrs in Pittsburgh PA. Fresh Batteries every fall and she’d crank to start until about yr 7 so a block heater went in no more coldies for me!

Back in the 70s I'd sit in the cab with my hand on the glow plug switch my other hand holding the compression release open leave the glow plug switch turn the key spin it over my wife would give the intake a shot of either slam the compression lever down and it'd light up every time

Thats a damn good engine, I just n framed one in the l8000 dumptruck, and it had a blown head gasket with a broke lifter and it still drove right in the shop, great engines

My dad would say back in the day in Mexico they would make a small fire under the engine to heat up the oil so the engine would crank

For not having any glow plugs that is amazing. My gm 1.9 (z19dth) wouldn't have any chance ever starting without glow plugs in icy weather and I still concider it a tank.

Pre-heating the engine isnt only gonna help to start the engine, but it also wears out lot quicker if not pre-heated in cold weathers

yea generally most of the cummins motors we have, love the cold even like my 6.7 with no grid in it and the fiats usually start right up

Had a retired 842,654 miles 2007 isl city bus sitting outside where I worked it was 5* and had been sitting for a year that old girl fired right up but it was common rail.

I have an 84 f150, and when I tell you this diesel just started better than my truck every morning in 30 degree weather… I’m ashamed on my truck 😂 it’ll start up, die, start, die, for a good 6 times before she starts and keeps my neighbor awake for 10 mins at 6am before I leave and go to work.

I had a 855 block , it was a 444 hydraulic lifter advanced the timing , it was pushing 500 hp before any factory diesels with 500 hp came out ..

@@samdherring at -40 the biggest problem is the oil, becomes too thick. You want to heat up the oil before you crank the engine.

engines with hydraulic lifters have rly hard time starting with frozen high density oil. Pressure is so high you can actually damage them or if you push is and rev it high the valves can hit pistons! So if you see a the first crank its almost about to turn on and it stops then it needs more to start up again its because oil arrived at the lifters and valves have hard time sitting back to build proper compression

Reminds me of my dads 351 Windsor f150 lariat extended bed was an 86 and yes some mornings it just said no you had to put a space heater under the hood over night if you had somewhere to be early in the am when it was cold

With that air start, you let it pressure up for about 40 seconds, then let her spin, you'll cook the seals on the pump not letting the pump get hot and properly set with pressure

I've got a 1993 and she smokes a bit (a lot actually, big blue cloud )but -20 below with good battery's fires right up everytime. I do usually plug it in but that's optional. Now my 2002 7.3 if it hasn't been plugged in for 2hrs you myswell come back because your not going anywhere.

If you have an outlet near by Just put a hair dryer blowing at the intake manifold for 15 minutes that should do the trick for those who need glow plugs but for some reason aren't working
