Chronicled in a high school notebook the audio here, which I had read but not heard, is for a school assignment while at Oak Glen HS, for which he interviewed his classmates about their feelings about various colors. So, yellow... When Daniel first experienced serious depression in junior high school he sequestered himself in the school library to avoid socializing. He had wanted to be a visual artist since childhood so while there he spent his time paging through art books and discovered a kindred spirit in Vincent Van Gogh. Mostly he looked at his art but he read about him too and that's how he wound up diagnosing himself with manic depression, recognizing much of himself in Van Gogh's own experience of the same condition. For Van Gogh, yellow was the color of happiness. In the mid-80s in Austin, Daniel met members of avant-garde Austin band Glass Eye and invited them to his apartment where a yellow sheet hung on the wall. When asked about it he told them it reminded him to be happy. This a treasure of a film. Thanks for sharing it.
