Jose Mari Chan originally wanted Lea to record this song but they belonged to different record labels so she wasn't able to record on his album and he recorded it with his daughter instead. I think she is a year younger than Lea. (I'm pretty sure the song was released in 1990 when Lea was 19.) It's great that Lea finally got to record this song!

José Mari Chan composed this in English, originally as a jubilee song for a Catholic all-girls academy here. Ironically, he wanted to sing it with Lea Salonga, but she was unavailable so he had his daughter Liza record the chorus with him. The "lanterns" in the song are paról, which are generally star-shaped and remind us of the Star of Bethlehem. Also, Tagalog technically lists "D" and "R" as separate letters and sounds, but they were originally allophones. In fact, if a "D" follows a vowel in a lot of cases, it becomes an "R".

It was about the time he was compiling songs for a Christmas album, and he thought of Rina and called her. He gave her the melody and the song were hatched. He originally asked Lea Salonga to sing with him the duet part, Lea agreed but her recording company would not allow her to do so. As many have already mentioned, the song was written in English and always sung in English. If I may kindly explain, the language word, "Tagalog" is correctly pronounced as Tah-gah'-log where the accent is on the 2nd syllable (think words such as, Decem'ber; inten'tion; remem'ber, ingre'dients, etc) Happy holidays/Merry Christmas!

Back story to this song. Jose Mari Chan recently said in an interview that he wanted Lea to sing this song back then but her Record label/company doesn't want Lea to crossover so it didn't happen. So lea said that it really was pre-destined for her to sing this song.

The original was a duet with Jose Mari Chan and his daughter. But Jose said that he originally asked Lea Salonga to duet with her on the track. She said yes of course, but due to her management at the time, they didn't want her to collab with his management. So Lea had to respectfully decline. Jose asked his daughter (while on a tight schedule to record) if she would be able to learn the song quick. But it's interesting how decades later, it came full circle, and now Lea did a studio acapella cover with Pentatonix.

Actually, "Filipino" is our language which is basically tagalog and a mixture of other Philippine languages and dialects including some English words. Tagalog is spoken mostly in the tagalog region including NCR (National Capital Region) and every province in the region has its own tagalog dialect, which is why a law has been passed which refers to "Filipino" as the language and "Pilipino" as the people. When it comes to phonetics, we do not have long vowels and we do not have accentuated "T".
