Here’s a video explaining a few of the ways I like to use Ableton Live for practice.
I've been using Ableton Live over the last few years for all of my lessons, as well as my personal practice. I'm not endorsed by them, I just think their program is amazingly effecting for practicing the guitar.

Just ran into this video. After reading a lot of opinion about how Ableton is only good for electronic music, this was very nice to see. It's got me thinking about upgrading my Lite...thanks for doing this. The tip about the bass lines was really helpful!

As far as teaching about making a beat to help keep timing, best vid ive seen so far. I can never even get a song started because I spend hours trying to figure out how to keep everything in time.

Fantastic Daniel. I've had Focusrite/Ableton for a couple of years now and due to work constraints never managed to sit down long enough to work these things out being a complete beginner. But wow, this little vid you've put together has got me going straight away. I was so happy when you pulled out the SM57 so I dug mine out. This vid really was made for me!! Yep perfect timing... just picked up a scarlet and it came with the light version of the software. This has been very helpful thank you. I'm using a GT 100 and I have its outputs going into the scarlet, and then to a pair of FRFR speakers. Otherwise I lose all of the benefits of the GT 100 and what it has to offer. I'm sure there's other ways to configure things but that's what I have for now. Thanks again!

@@DanielSeriffMusic there is this plugin i run in a different app called ashost to make mi usb keyboard sound like a cloud drum. Is there a way to send that signal to ableton session view?

@@davidlerner8624 Hmmm. You might be able to open that plugin on a midi track in Ableton. Sorry, haven't dealt with that.

Hi Daniel, i would like to say thank you for this video you have shared, i am using ableton for almost half year and keep on looking for youtube that something to learn on but your one is definitely Wow. I just dont know how to make or change the beat when chorus goes... any reply will be appreciated.

That is awesome! So glad you enjoyed the video. I would suggest duplicating what you have on row 1, and adding ride cymbal to it on the 2nd tow. That’ll give you a chorus lift. If you wanna do deeper arrangements, I think it’s best to use arrangement view.

@@arpandave18 Nice! There are some really great ones now. The Neural DSP is very good. You might check out the Corey Wong Version. Also Bias or guitarig are quite good.

PRS question. How do you compare the CE24 Reclaimed Wood Semi Hollow Edition to the Special Semi Hollow you have in this vid? I have the CE24 Reclaimed but very interested in the Special but no way to compare. Cheers!

The Reclaimed is 1/3 the price. So that should be taken into consideration. Otherwise...both are really excellent guitars. I am selling this Semi Hollow Special. Really cool guitar but I have some other things in the works. It’s super tonally diverse!

I am using a shotgun mic, which is fairly directional. That being said, You're hearing a mix from the computer audio and mic as well.

Hi Daniel, great lesson, especially for total newbies like me. Maybe it's a dumb question so I'll just drop it here. How do you get Ableton live to start recording after an empty measure (4 beats just like you say at 6:15)? I can't figure it out! I'd appreciate any help!

Hey Gavino! Thanks for the comment. There are two options here. If you want a countoff, at the beginning of your recording, click the down arrow that is directly beside the metronome in the top left corner. If you are in the middle of playing, there is a menu directly beside that one which you set for how long it take before your recording starts *while the track is playing.* Hope that is helpful!

Good video. I'd love to see you do this more. Maybe just building tracks to practice to? A suggestion would be: pick a key pick a genre Set up the foundation of the track (as you did in this video) - chord progression, palm mutes Then decide various scales to practice sequentially and then most importantly improvisation over them Then go further and discuss typical ways to break the track into section and not just a loop Follow up videos would be stock plugins to get a good sound? Crafting tones for genre? Paid plugins that enhance your playing etc. Keep going mate - good content

@@DanielSeriffMusic paul davids (another youthber) seems to have success with his camera angles. Check him out. I just think id benefit from practicing scales and improv using ableton as youve shown and love to see you explore it more.

I'll have to peruse your channel but off the top of my head.. how about a little help with understanding how to determine what bpm and signature a guitar riff might be recorded in, and how to set up a session in Ableton accordingly, and or help using the metronome. Thank you.

I just purchased Ableton to practice with the guitar myself. I don't enjoy playing alone with a metronome, and the speed adjustments in KZfaq backing tracks don't work for me as well as I like. I think it's a great idea to work around an Ableton backing track with it's more fluid BPM controls. You have any project files available?

Absolutely! You are correct, but I’ve used a ton, and for this purpose Ableton is the absolute easiest.

How is your rig set up to avoid latency? I use a focusrite interface and there is always a delay when i DI right into ableton.

Thank you for that. I have ableton live lite. When I try to program the drums there is no 1/8th notes. And even with the tempo set at 80bpm they are playing stupidly fast. Can you help please.

Hey! You are welcome. Depending on whether you're on mac or PC the controls are different. You'll got to the grid and right click or control click the grid, set the subdivision to 1/8 rather than 1/16. That should do it.

@@DanielSeriffMusic Yeah of course! in your video you first line-in to ableton using interface. in the upgrade section you said using a mic(SM57) will get you better sound. But line-in should get more clean sound. Using mic is for the one who want the exact amp sound, right? :D Thanks for your reply!

@@theclancyjack gotcha! Yes, so mic is going to get your true tone of your amp unless you have some kind of awesome amp plugin in your ableton. There are a lot available, Neural DSP, Mixwave. My preference is to definitely mic up the amp! Thanks for the comment and question.

I can totally be done in any DAW. That being said, I really believe that ableton is the simplest to use in regards to quick backing tracks for practice.

I use Suite but you could even use intro. It’s very powerful as well.

Besides backing tracks, do you think ableton is the easiest/best for songwriting too? Easier/better than GarageBand?

Great question. I’ve used a lot. GarageBand is free so that’s a perk. I don’t love GarageBand or logic personally. Ableton has a $100 entry cost and you can get a ton out of it. I think it’s easy to use. When I record bands I like to use Pro Tools but that’s a deep hole to step in. Summary…I’d recommend Ableton unless you’re already familiar with GarageBand/logic and wanna go down that path.

Sorry. I only use it in this way. You could copy and paste into the arrangement view (click tab) if you’re trying to arrange a song or something.

Sorry bro! Ableton far exceeds the quality and ability of a looper. Most people who use loopers have a terribel sense of time because they are practicing to their own arhythmic selves. With ableton? You can play with world class drummers, loop sections, loop smaller parts, create entire tracks, mix, pan. It's just heads above. Trust me, I've used tons of loopers over the last 15 years and do love them...but they don't remotely compare to ableton. Sorry bro.

@@DanielSeriffMusic @Daniel Seriff I know what DAW is for but in this video you show how to jsut make a loop to practise with. basicaly what you do 4:55 - 6:55 and takes you 2 mins to do in the video you do with looper in literaly 15 seconds You probably never played with looper enough. 1) It improves your sence of rythm showing you exactly what you do wrong and when you re bad in tempo 2) for example BOSS RC 30 and many others has click track and drum machine built in (no chance of inconsistent tempo and a bad loop) 3) unlimited overdub 4) completely hands free like press record, set tempo, set drums(I prefer to be more musical and do my own beats percusively), create a loop ,overdub. deleting a loop 5) encourages musical thinking overall. BTW the resonator uke in tha background is SICK
