Meeting the sea at Saltburn I head alone the cliffs, some of the highest on the east coast of England. I visit a few small towns along the way and see signs of industry and Roman fortifications.

The lumps and bumps on the cliffs sputh of Skinnigrove are the remains of the alum workings. In the 16th century the popes, who had the monoply of alum in Italy banned the export of alum to England as we had broken away from the Roman Ctholic church. Alum was needed as a mordant for the dying of wool. A Huisborough man who had been to Italy and seen their alum quarries realised that the rocks in thatbpar of Yorkshire were similar to those in Italy. He brough coal from the Durham coal field to burn the rocks for nine months at a time before the ashes were put into leeching tanks with urine collected from Lonodon, Newcastle and Kingston upon Hull, to name but a few sources. When they could float an egg in the liquid it was ready for the collection of the alum crystals.

+BRYAN JONES Good to be missed! I lost a big toe nail in Montana in July and decided to get it a few weeks to grow a little! I've got three more videos to hopefully film before November kicks in (when it often becomes too windy or wet to film) so hopefully I'll be posting again soon

The guy who started Saltburn (from scratch) was actually an industrialist called Joseph Pease. He even built the place using bricks from his own company. Clearly he did a fab job; I love the place.

Eric George Saltburn was tere long before Peases came along, it was a collection of cottages down by the Ship Inn. The Peases developed "modern" Saltburn to the north of the station.

@@neildahlgaard-sigsworth3819 You are correct, but Saltburn as it is today would not have existed without Joseph Pease vision.
