After WWII Denmark thought there might be a market for an affordable bolt action rifle for countries who couldn't afford to adopt new self loading rifles, which were all the rage in the 50's. The Madsen M47 had one military taker, Colombia. Even then, the Colombians don't appear to have used them much, if at all. The rifle featured in this video is a 1950's era Colombian contract rifle.

I’ve got one that my dad picked up out of the back of an American Rifleman years ago. Those were some great ads. I used that gun for decades, hunting deer in Eastern PA and New York State. Ironically, Remington 180 grain Jacketed RN was my load of choice. A great round for 100 yard shots in brush. You don’t see much info about this gun, which is a shame. Shooting that gun as a teenager was no problem at all, since the recoil was reduced so much. It really was no worse than a .30-30, in my opinion. Still have it, and though I don’t hunt anymore, I still enjoy shooting this old gun. Thanks for some great info Mac!

So after WW2, which showed the obsolescence of bolt action general service rifles, and let millions of them left laying around, somebody decides to develop a new one? Best business idea ever....

For countries who couldn't afford the fancy semi autos. It's not a terrible business idea. The AR-18 was designed on the same principle though that also wasn't a commercial success.

@@theangrycheeto Why not just buy the millions of leftover bolt actions? Do you understand how many cheap Mosins, Lee-Enfields, and Mausers were lying around?

@kingofcrunk4237 Well, most European countries did use weapons supplied by the Allies. Denmark mainly used surplus 1903 and older Enfield models till we adopted the M1 in 1948. My guess is that Madsen really wanted to get back into the flow after 4 years of occupation, so they didn't really get a feel for what was aimed for on a world level.

The Madsen M47, was a very well made rifle. But, it was a day late and a dollar short, as they say. By the time it was put into production, the countries that were really looking to upgrade their equipment, were going to self loading rifles, and those that were more strapped for cash were simply buying surplus weapons from those that were upgrading. Had it been put into production even just a few years earlier, it would have been a greater success. Cool video. Keep em coming.
@ozdavemcgee2079
@ozdavemcgee2079 4 жыл бұрын
I can see the logic of making it... hypothetically perhaps for eg Kenya may want to throw off all colonial reminders and not use a Lee Enfield for example. Lets face it at the end of WWII whod have thought mass production of semi autos could be achieved so rapidly or that Russia, would basically dump and flood markets with WWII surplus, afterall, previously they were a fairly isolationist country. 1947, the cold war had started. However, isnt there always some diplomatic frostiness after a war, like how long did it take America to talk to Vietnam on equal terms is a great example of that. Even better examples would be Europe post WWI a bit of we dont like you into the 20s, then its trade as normal, within confines of the depression. Had there been no cold war and everyone just greased their WWII weapons up ( like happened at end of WW1) this rifle could have found a bit of a niche market. No cold war, theres no way every man and his dog would have been making semis and automatics en masse.

Well, the issue there was that just about every country in the late 40s and early 50s were looking for a new semi automatic rifle or just bought huge numbers of captured surplus Mausers, Carcanos or Arisakas, because they were fantastic, proven guns for cheap. Most hunters did the same thing. A new hunting gun was expensive. A used military gun of arguably better quality was cheap, and could have been sporterized in any number of ways. Now I collect sporterized guns to restore. Sporterized military surplus guns make me sad to look at. But my personal crusade to restore sporters that can be 100% restored to military configuration is my favorite hobby, so there's that. So far, I've saved an Eddystone P14, Brazilian 08/34 .30 30-06 Mauser and a No.1 Mk III* Lee-Enfield with all original parts. And its a bonus to save damn near $300-$400 when restoring vs buying a complete rifle. And when I'm done, I sell the sporter stocks. My only set criteria is that the guns' metal parts have to be uncut and not touched by a drill. Having good bore condition is a factor, but I would consider buying and rebarreling a rifle, depending on its rarity.

Tim Merry Christmas to you your family and coworkers! Thanks for the video I just bought one of these from one of the local guns shops last week, mine is not as pristine as yours but it is in really nice shape. The bore is like a mirror on the thing I haven't had a chance to put some rounds down range yet but I'm looking forward to it. From the information I have been able to find is that only five to six thousand were made and yes Columbia is the only military to purchase the rifle. It was said that they were bought for their Navy but never issued. Now there are some rumors in certain circles that say the rifle was used for some ceremonial/parade use but I have not been able to determine that. Keep up the great work and keep fighting the fight! Have a SAFE and Happy New Year!

Awesome little 30-06 rifle, I kind of like the way it looks and that the M47s sights are adjustable for windage. 1 con that i have is that it looks like you have to watch out when you pull the bolt back, you mit get poked in the nose. Also you have to keep lifting your head off the stock when you pull the bolt back everytime.Merry Christmas to you and your family at MAC.
