I was much more incentivized to go see a movie in a theater when I knew I wouldn’t be able to watch it at home for like 6+ months. Now the turnaround time is so quick, that unless it’s a huge event movie that would obviously benefit from a theater experience, I know I can just watch it at home in a month or 2.

Whereas before Covid I think people would see almost anything at the movies, I think post Covid there is an now an extremely strong divide between what types of movies people will see at the theatre, and which they won’t. People now are only willing to take the effort and expense to go to the theatres to see “event” movies, where the actual viewing experience is necessarily enhanced by seeing it with an audience. Simply swing a movie “early” is no longer enough of an incentive. I think that people are still interested in this type of movie, and I expect it will do quite well on streaming, but it’s not the type of movie that necessarily admits of being enhanced by seeing it with a theatre audience, and the shared energy and anticipation that goes along with it. Studios need to be more careful about which movies they select to go to theatres, and which go to streaming.
@YTguySmithy-lk6go
@YTguySmithy-lk6go 5 ай бұрын
Good points. I don't think "event" films = good or original films. Wonka is based on a book written in 1964. Barbie based on a toy from 1959. Oppenheimer based on an event from the 1940s. This is not exactly cutting edge original content. 🤭
@ras_732
@ras_732 5 ай бұрын
That depends which studios you claim needs to be careful, because independent studios definitely rely on theaters, especially if they're banking well with per theater average numbers. When audiences over-rely too much on streaming, Indie studios will be the biggest casualty financially because streaming is not exactly a profitable method.

Wonka's legs continue to be astonishing, still can't believe it outperformed the near billion dollar Oppenheimer in 2 of the Top 10 movie markets (UK & Mexico) and is within $3.5m of it in a 3rd big market (AUS)! 16:30; Apple claimed back in March '22 re CODA that; "following its historic Best Picture win for both a streamer, and a predominantly Deaf cast feature saw viewership go up by 300% over the prior week week to become the No. 1 most watched program on AppleTV+, and also drawing 25% new viewers to the OTT service."

I find the Dune Pt II 70 mm presentation especially confusing. Its obviously capitalizing off of Oppenheimer's 70 mm success, but Oppenheimer was actually shot on 70 mm film, whereas with Dune Pt II being filmed digitally and then printed on to 70 mm film I really have no clue if seeing Dune Pt II in 70 mm is actually worth it the way Oppenheimer was. I would imagine the way a digital camera is able to capture an image is nowhere near the quality that a 70 mm film camera is able to capture an image,

"The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes" is probably the movie that benefitted the most from "The Marvels" bombing out of theaters. Not give to give any food to the trolls, but I really want Dan to break down what he thinks happened there. The complete collapse of one of Marvel's tentpole features is one of the most important box office stories of last year, but I feel we were too exhausted from all of the year's other box office disasters to really discuss it.
@Sounder1995
@Sounder1995 5 ай бұрын
I don't think that your last statement fully captures the reality last year. Murrell was on honeymoon for nearly all of November, so pretty much the entire timespan of the Marvels' run from disappointing debut to rapid death. His post-honeymoon catchup video was super long, so he could only afford to give brief mention to the box office disaster. I've also noticed that Murrell no longer does super in-depth looks at box office catastrophes like he's done in the past for films like Solo. The Flash was a disaster, yet he only spent one sentence or so offering suggestions as to why. My take has been that positing reasons for box office disasters is not an exact science and goes against the objective and fairly math-heavy nature of the show. You can't poll or interview everyone who didn't go see a film to know why they didn't go see it. As such, I suspect that he's streamlining this show to focus more on objective realities and less on theory. As far as why The Marvels bombed, I think that it's pretty simple (though, obvious caveat, this is merely my hypothesis). The Marvels features Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau pretty heavily in its advertising (heck, it's in the title). The reality is that most people (even casual MCU movie fans) don't watch the Disney Plus shows and probably feel like it's homework to track down the relevant ones and sit through them all just to understand a single film. Even if those shows don't necessarily tie into The Marvels' plot that much, the advertising would not give that impression as it depicts Khan and Rambeau as characters that the audience should already be familiar with. It's also almost guaranteed that the MCU is no longer a guarantee of quality, so audiences are more hesitant about seeing them. This is evidenced by the declining box office returns, steep box office drop-offs, and lower Cinemascores, all post-Endgame. A lot of the MCU being on Disney Plus also likely reduces the franchise's prestige to being mere streaming content, something that evidently both Bob Iger and Patty Jenkins seem to agree on now with regard to streaming. Finally, even though it's usually pointless to argue against the trolls whom always wanted this film to fail, I think that one singular piece of evidence highlights the weakness in their "arguments": The majority of opening night audiences for both Captain Marvel films (or at least the film one) have surprisingly been majority male. I can't remember the name of the organization that gathers the demographic data though, even though Murrell's mentioned them repeatedly on this show.
@troyen3869
@troyen3869 5 ай бұрын
I recall it being covered sufficiently on the channel before, though hard to remember exactly where. Dan's review touched on what he thought were problems in the movie, then he later did a "If I Ran Marvel" video that contained a lot more discussion about problems he saw with the modern MCU in general. I think there was also a charts segment or two with the franchise tracker and box office profit calculation that talked about it some more. That was probably late November or early December because he was on his honeymoon during the actual release.

@@Sounder1995 adding to the MCU turning streaming reason: Nick Fury is another major character in the marketing for The Marvels. His show, Secret Invasion turned out really bad. People only talked about it for the AI credits and death of a loved character. Many more probably didn’t watch it. Everything was going against the movie, regardless of its own quality.

Will be very interesting to see how Dune Part 2 does when it opens next month. It is currntly tracking to open to $50M-$75M , but I think it could open much higher than that. It seems the hype is growing, since the first movie was released. Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya’s stars have only risen since the first movie came out. If the movie is as good as the trailer promises, I think this could be one of the biggest hits of 2024.

15:31 (Apple Movies) also I think as a side thing on the wanting the movies to be theatrical, I think it could be one of the few instances that people might actually see the movie aside from maybe renting or streaming it. I think people might know their streaming service exists, but maybe might not want to or be able to plop down the extra cash to get that service to see what's on there. It's possible there's some stuff on there that they might like, but they can't see it or won't know becasue of the whole walled garden nature of streaming. And Apple is kind of off to the side as far as the other mainstream platforms. If those movies or shows ended up on a place like Netflix, I can see maybe people giving the film more buzz, maybe extra memes showing up around the shows and things. But that probably wouldn't help the bottom line at all for the movies or shows. i don't know if i was going anywhere with this. Just that Apple has some nice stuff on their platform.

Think it was a slip of the tongue, but Anselem is not an animated film, but instead a 3D Wim Wenders documentary about a German artist. It's spectacular and the best use of 3D I've ever seen! The 3D offers you the chance to see the shapes and curves of Anselem's sculptures and various pieces. Once this film leaves the theatrical window, it will never be seen the same again (as it relies so much on that 3D to capture the type of work Anselem makes). If you're near one of those 9 theaters, go see it now or you will never be able to see it the same again! Always love and appreciate your work Dan!!!

Dan, I love going to the movies a lot and the premium large formats and IMAX are definitely key factors when selecting the showtime for each film. My personal favorite is Dolby Cinema (not a fan of that new intro btw) and PRIME as I love feeling the atmosphere of the story. As for IMAX, I only go there for films that are specifically made for IMAX with its expanded aspect ratio or if it’s only format available for a particular film. To me, PLF and IMAX are very important when it comes to watching movies, and I think movie theater chains desperately needs to consider adding more PLF and IMAX screens to their theater as they are in demand from not just moviegoers but from filmmakers as well. That would be beautiful!

To an extent, I think trying to have an honest discussion about Apple is difficult, because there are so many out there that have tied their identity to Apple, so talking about Apple failing at something is an insult to them. It's bizarre to me, but that's reality. In the end, taking a more reasoned look is more likely to be right, but you can be sure that the defenders won't say anything if Apple does end up changing it's methods because it's not working.

Godzilla Minus One was so good. Well deserved run and can't wait for the physical release on 4k UHD. For Apple don't Foundation, Silo, For All Mankind count? Not the universal plaudits of Ted Lasso, but still amazing TV.

Who thought _Argyle, Ghosted, The Family Man..._ were good investments? Apple needs to change their executive/executives in charge of feature content development and acquisition. They just don't have an eye for good stuff. Even their "prestige films," _Napoleon_ and _Killers of the Flower Moon,_ are indulgent slogs that will draw very few people to subscribe to AppleTV.

We went to an IMAX screening for Dune part one at a different theater than our usual, and the seating experience didn't make up for the trademark. Our usual theater has a big fancy screen with the extra sound and an X in the branded name, and it has super comfy, leather reclining seats that are arranged so their isn't a bad seat in the house. The IMAX theater was cramped and uncomfortable, more expensive for a lesser quality experience. Especially since I will be very, very pregnant seeing Dune Part 2, comfort is definitely worth it. Plus, the screen is huge and the sound is excellent and it's a worthwhile trade in. Since having a Marcus Cinema, AMC and Cinemark both feel like a let down. Highly recommended checking one out if you have one available. (I think they're mostly in Great Lakes states)

Flower Moon and Napoleon would both have done much better if they came in at around 120 minutes not including credits. Getting in an extra showing oer day on the premium screens as well as being more appealing to people who don't care for extra long films would have brought in many millions of dollars more. I own a small town single screen theatre and I can' tell you that people under 40 have less attention span than ever and it gets worse the younger the person. Almost NO story REALLY needs to be more than 2 hours, change my mind. Don't tell me about big long films that came out before smartphones, those no longer apply to today's attention standards.

Napoleon just plain wasn't good. Flower Moon *might* have pulled in a little more with a shorter cut, but given the subject material I don't think it would have been enough to make money.

I'm curious about Apple's "Investment" numbers vs a traditional budget. Is it possible that the "investment" already includes marketing and maybe the distribution deal? If so that would make the numbers seem still bad but less bad at least. I don't know anything, I'm just hypothesizing.

In regards to Apple Tv - remember that Google ran KZfaq without any form of monetisation for quite a few years in order to grow it and make it a success (and only then bringing in the ads).
@DanMurrellMovies
@DanMurrellMovies 5 ай бұрын
But KZfaq was an almost instant success. It proved itself to be a revolutionary video platform. It was obvious that it would be a massive revenue generator. Apple TV+ is now over four years old. It's not, by almost every account, a major player in streaming other than generating well-regarded but low-viewed streaming shows. The hits like Ted Lasso are few and far between. I understand that every major venture runs at a loss for a time. My point is that Apple is bound to reach a point where massive investment isn't a sound strategy anymore if it's not seeing results from that strategy.

I saw Lisa Frankenstein at a surprise advanced screening last night. I predict it will do well its first weekend and then have a MASSIVE drop. The movie was a huge let-down, especially when compared to its marketing. It will have its fans, but it's a much more niche-type movie that was marketed to the masses.

As much as I'm not fond of the world's most profitable company at times, I do appreciate the impact of the willingness to throw money at the art of cinema. Regarding companies "throwing money out the window"... if they see it as an investment, or as a cost to increase profits elsewhere, they absolutely will keep doing it. It's similar to dumping, except it's increased expenses instead of predatory pricing (i.e. lowered income). International auto-makers did it a lot in the 70s and 80s (there were a LOT of reasons why imports were cheaper to produce and ship to the US than domestic cars, dumping is simply one of them). Amazon's Prime is another great example. If you look at Prime alone... they lose money. But it's ABSOLUTELY worth it, because it brings more people to Amazon and it brings more media to Prime Video. But... even if they do lose money... if they end up forcing their competitors to lose *MORE* money, that's also a benefit. As for what benefit Apple gets, I'm certain it's more than simply Apple+. I'm also certain Apple knows far more than I do, so I won't speculate.

I'm not an Apple fan (refuse to buy their overpriced devices), but recently signed up to Apple TV+ mostly to view 'Masters of the Air'. Have to say their shows are some of the best TV shows I've watched in a long time - absolutely love 'For All Mankind', 'Ted Lasso', 'Dickinson', 'Prehistoric Planet', 'Still', and of course 'Masters of the Air'. That said the movies are only average in my opinion - only watched 'Ghosted', 'Family Plan' and 'Greyhound' so far, but will be watching more (e.g. Flower Moon). Not too excited about 'Napoleon' or 'Argyle' though.

You have to take Apple’s tax position the loss on movies are a tax credit not against revenue but directly against tax owning under US tax code for investment in the Arts. Apple had a cash flow of 113 billion USD with a tax penalty of 23 Billion. So 200 off the taxes means the American public paid for it. .

Yeah the Apple trajectory of it giving blank checks only to return with flops reminds me Netflix and A24’s route. Netflix I recall stopped paying for prestige stuff like The Irishman and is now relying on blockbuster mainstream stuff like Kevin Hart and Ryan Reynolds, and acquisitions from festivals like Sundance for example. A24 is well-known about supporting unique movies but even them, they have reported to want a piece of the pie and pivot towards franchises and more mass appeal especially after movies like Beau is Afraid bombed. Sure Killers and Napoleon are quite niche and imo deserves their budgets despite underperforming, but Argylle was supposed to be their moneymaking franchise and for that to bomb as well is rough and not looking good for future prospects.

I feel like you don’t get enough out of the foreign titles of films. Like “wo die Lüge hinfällt” is, arguably, a much better name than “Anyone But You” whereas “Patos!” is just an odd choice for “Migration”, especially if it’s the Spanish poster because then they’re missing a ¡ Would be interested to know what’s going on with those other posters but I can’t read Korean or Japanese and can’t even identify Wonka (I’m thinking South Asia somewhere)

So much worrying about Argylle flopping in cinemas. As if it matters. It's an AppleTV+ movie. We don't blink an eye when Netflix spends $200M on Red Notice or The Gray Man, with zero chance of box office revenue. Streamers be streamin'.

I'm not sure what Apple's strategy ever was. I'm pretty sure it wasn't to make a profit in the box office, and that's just a lure for talent. But then what? Subscribers? Maybe, but hard to compete with Netflix or Amazon with just a tiny pool of originals. To sell devices? That makes more sense in their overall mission, but how? It may be to just tread water until they can buy a Paramount or Lionsgate.

I still cannot belive that Kleks Academy made it into any of the lists. The old version (and its two sequels) were fun family friendly fantasy movies (made in the 80s) based on children books from the 40s made by an autor quite well known and popular in Poland (Jan Brzechwa), and i really liked those. They might be a bit outdated in some parts but still for what we could make buck they they are really something (also with great songs). But this new one... they tried to update it for new generation but i think they fails in some ways (the editing mostly and maybe the change of location). So i dont know how it eveg got to 8kk to get on the list (nostalgia plus rounding up schools to see it probably). Btw if you ever read this Dan, have you/will you see it? Do you know the original (probably not i will guess)? I would love to know what you think of this movie (and Polish cinema in general). And also (your opinion on) if making remakes of old classic is needed at all, if they still fun to watch just re-release them (it costs a lot less).
