At a seminar Danny said he doesn’t count when playing with Tool. He’s reacting to whatever craziness Adam and Justin bring and fills in the spaces, using cues to know when to switch patterns. Dude is above just a drummer, he is one with the musical universe.

What a great demonstration for non drummers to get some idea of the independence required of all four limbs to play polyrhythms. Danny is a beast of a player and master of composition.
@djjazzyjeff1232
@djjazzyjeff1232 3 жыл бұрын
That's the thing is you have to be able to "unlock" each limb from each other. You can tell with some amateur drummers when they're trying to play a tricky rhythm and their right hand is sort of "locked" to their right foot so they can't play the kick without also hitting the hat. Then you practice to get those two unlocked and then you've got to do the same with all 4 if you want to get proper good lol.

Not bad for a 60 year old guy! It never gets old watching Danny Carey perform this track. The isolated drum cam is a great way of showing what kinda of skill is required to not only be the time keeper but the key element in accenting the music all while being the one element that does not have luxury of stopping or making any catastrophic mistakes. And with Danny Carey he is in a class of his own. Since drummers are situated at the back of the stage practically out of sight they are often overlooked. After years of praising the greatness of Danny Carey to everyone I know, I'm glad they put this out there to validate that claim.

Don't know it myself, but heard another reactor claiming the time signature in the beginning is something like 6/8 6/8 5/8 to 6/8 5/8 5/8. Which is funny, because when you add the fives and sixes in this time signature formula, you get 33. Which is the number on his shirt 😎

Danny is a MONSTER ! The drum you talked about is a KORG Wave drum using the Tabla (India drums) setting. The other electronic pads he has 8 Mandala electronic pads. He is my favorite drummer of all time next to John Bonham (Led Zeppelin). He is a master of polyrythms and the middle section in the song he is playing 4 different drum at 4 differing time signatures . He's 58 when the video was filmed and he always wears basketball uniforms for each different city.

Amateurs practice it until they get it right. Professionals practice it until they can't get it wrong. Once Neil Peart passed away, I really felt like Danny Carey moved up into the #1 slot. His playing is just on a different level musically. I'd be willing to bet if you counted every single beat he plays in one show, it would be more than most drummers play in 2 or 3 shows.

So glad you reacted to this! Danny Carey is quite easily one of the greatest drummers the rock world has ever seen. He does it so effortlessly and makes it look so easy that it just racks your brain how anyone could be that good! And on Daz's statement that "all drummers are crazy", no statement could be truer lol. My best friend for over 20 years is the best drummer I've ever worked with, and the dude is just batshit insane. When I was in our band, we used to call him "Trip", because that's how we saw him. He was just a trip to be around, and he still is today. I swear I have so many stories about him I could write volumes! Cheers, Blokes, from Oklahoma!

9:25 amazing. Every word he just said is wrong🤣 The drums with the pentagram on them are called Mandala drums. Danny helped design them. They have 128 rings on them that can each be programmed with a different sound, and each of THOSE can have up to 128 tones depending on how hard they are hit. The bank of computers next to him are his audio processing kit for them. Bear in mind he has a rack of four of those drums on his right, and 3more on his left so that is 128x128x7 possible combinations JUST WITH THOSE. The small white drum beat plays the polyrhythm on is a roto tom drum, another electronic drum, but that has one sound (plus a rimshot sound) that can only vary on hit strength. He also has two true toms above his snare, 3 floor drums to his right, a bank of 3 other electronic toms to his left past the mandalas, 4/5 electric china cymbals, normal crash, splash, ride and hi hat, and another 3 or 4 cymbals of various types to his right, a giant gong behind him, an arched xylophone behind and above him, and the bass drums and snare. And he will use every single one at least once during a concert, or he gets rid of it. The man is a mad genius with a drum kit that’s possibly worth upwards of £20k, BEFORE all the electric audio computers and processors. He also switches audio presets between songs as he personally programs each drum to his tastes.
