His Mandala pads have 128 strike points arranged in 7 concentric strike zones. The Korg wave drum is the WD-1. Interesting note, the curved keyboard (behind him above his symphonic gong) is called a Marimba Lumina. He plays it standing up with giant mallets. Each key being a designated strike zone.✌

@@JasonSayersDrums dude is so into drumming he helps invent even more complicated stuff to smash his sticks on. He helped developing these Mandala pads. They also don't just have a crapton of strike zones compared to normal trigger pads, they also have 127 levels of strike sensitivity. So the precision isn't just where you hit them, but how hard you hit them.

At around the 10:12 mark, he starts playing a swiss triplet rudiment in 16th notes leading with his right hand - R - flam - L. This is hard enough on a single drum, let alone dancing around a kit, with no recognizable effort. He looks so relaxed. Another great example of this is on another drum cam video of him playing Triad.

The drum he's playing is a tabla. I know this because it was my roomate Judd that introduced it to him. I knew Danny when he first came to Hollywood as he was living with my friend Pollyane. HIs dedication to his craft and work ethic is on par with some of the greatest athletes out there like Kobe Bryant. I was in one of the bands that played at the show where Tool got signed.

“That drum” is an old Korg Wavedrum using the “tabla drone” preset. The ones with patterns are custom/prototype Syensthesia Mandala multizone electronic pads. Also you didn’t ask but the mallet pad in the background is an old Buchla Marimba Lumina, and the large square box with the blinky lights is a modular synth (see: Chocolate Chip Trip)

So I agree Danny's skill is exceptional, and I dont know if it was directly Justin, but AEnima is clearly where the Tool sound was born, and it cant be a coincidence that Justin joining for AEnima and Tool start to become far more proggresive

Two years later I know but this video shows the best example as to why the high hat is in the middle...when he starts going at the tabla sounding drum with his right hand and casually carries on everything else with his left, including accents with the high hat. I don't believe I've ever seen a drummer use the high hat with both hands in the same song (in this manner)

I don't know shit about drums, but that ride placement makes 100% sense when speaking in ergonomic terms. Since the ride is one of the most(usually) used cymbal(second to the hats) it allows him to keep his wrist in a natural position when using the ride. Hold a drum stick in your hand pointing up and stretch out your arm. That ride placement makes total sense in its position, and you won't tire out or cramp your forearm muscles as you would with a flat placed ride. Having a flat ride will require you to bend your wrist more to get a proper strike placement on the cymbal itself. Your shoulder, and upper arm(bi's and tri's) muscles are a lot stronger and have more stamina. You can use those muscles to get your on the count ride hits from the elbow and use flicks of the wrist to get speed. It's the same idea for keyboardists who play standing up and have their board tilted down. You get way more precision and stamina in your hands when your wrists are kept in a natural position. Again, I'm just speculating, as I don't know shit about drumming. I used to play keyboard and guitar, and I noticed that my precision and stamina dropped significantly the more I would bend my wrists.

Ok, the toilet lid is a very old 1at gen handsonic. The colored pads are madalla pads "spelling may be off" they're 6 zone pads, where each zone blends with the sound of the neighboring zones. The ride is the Paste Blue Bell. My favorite of all time, I was so "well obviously" when he came out using it. It is actually Stewart Copeland's signature ride.

Any drummer who elects to purchase an electric drum set, is already dooming his or herself to become a master of signal flow the likes no guitarist could ever hope to achieve. Adding electric cymbals, their are at least 8 different instruments you have to amplify. They aren’t delicate, but you play them by hitting them with a stick. So learning how to repair them is in the future as well.

Well, if it's a trigger, it can be any sound he wants. I'd say most, if not all are triggers. That looks like the big brain controlling it all behind him. On closer inspection, I only see one mic and that is on the snare, so probably the snare is a drum and the rest triggers? I see a mic on the floor tom too, so that's a drum.

Its a drum. They're all fucking drums! The trigger is the drum stick.

The man is talking about electronic drum triggers Stop being cynical and masking it with humor, it’s not good for your long term mental health

@@brendanf8845 I guess I'll reply again. Seems my last reply was deleted. I'll sum it up. Thanks for the shitty psychoanalysis, Doc. I know he's talking about electronic triggers, repeatedly mentioning triggers that are obviously not there. He's hitting tightly tuned drums. I'll make any cynical statements dressed as humor that I like. Jesus, if we took away cynicism dressed as humor there'd be no good humor left. My psyche can handle it as I'm not some thin-brained pussy who can't take a joke. Piss off with your misguided, weak attempts to reign in my smart mouth.

Language is a funny thing, isn't it? It turns out, any particular word can have more than one meaning. Some arrogant asshole once put me through the wringer, suggesting that "solidify" only pertained to water and ice, just so he could gain the favor of a gal that was within earshot. There's being confident, and then there's actually knowing what you're talking about, which doesn't require confidence, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

Hey buddy. If you're a drummer why not play a video of you jammin triplets? Actually anything. I'm looking forward to that day. Even though I know it'll never come.

Actually this is being worked on. I only have enough room for my electric practice kit in my drum room. I tend to find videos played on electronic drums not as nice to view sometimes so I am currently looking at ways to do some covers. They definitely won’t be as intricate as tool songs though.
