Renowned Hollywood composer, Danny Elfman, sat down with NYO's Bronagh & Tom to discuss his career in music, his advice for young musicians, and to tell all about his brand new composition written especially for NYO, "Wunderkammer", which world-premiered at The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester as part of our 'NYO Open Up: Free Spirits' concert tour, this summer.
Some of Danny's best known film scores include Tim Burton's Beetlejuice & Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, and The Simpsons. As well as scoring over 100 films and writing for his band 'Oingo Boingo', his concert work has become a huge part of his career. He says, “I need to push myself into new territory with fresh challenges as much as I can and whenever I can. I am told I have a recognisable style but my greatest pleasure is when I can surprise the audience with my music.”
To hear us perform Danny Elfman's 'Wunderkammer' at the BBC Proms in 2022, the full broadcast is available on BBC Iplayer & BBC Sounds (available for 30 days):

People say how lucky an interviewer is. I say Danny is the lucky one. He had the opportunity to write for and talk with the next generation of musicians. We all retire and pass on the baton. Being such an inspiration to those who'll continue the arts is a blessing.

Listening to Danny Elfman speak as he shares his thoughts on the creative processes etc., is almost as good as listening to his music. He's brilliant, so passionate and absolutely fascinating.

Interesting to hear Danny Elfman's comments about the differences between film and classical music. While I can see where he's coming from, I believe the best film scores are the ones you can actually listen to on their own completely divorced from the film. For instance, I actually listened to Elfman's score for Batman Returns before I actually saw the movie, and I did so because I was so intrigued by his description of the composition process for that film (likening it to an opera). I consider it to be one of the greatest scores he's ever written due to its depth and complexity, and I would go on to say that it very much feels like a ballet score Tchaikovsky would've made. IMO, Elfman's Batman music remains unmatched.

What a great interview! You guys did great letting him speak and go on whatever tangent he wanted to go on and you can tell you guys hung onto every word he spoke. I would have been just like you in his presence, just being a sponge and absorbing any nugget of knowledge he would share. Absolutely loved it, great job!

Also it's amazing to hear him actually talk about composing and the instruments in depth, it's vastly different than any film-based interviews he's done. Clear to see the passion in what he's saying!

I remember when I was a child I can't get what is the understanding of classical music. I bought a few of tapes with Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini, Vivaldi and Haydn. And every day as i fell asleep I listened to them. For the first time it was hard and sometimes compositions was boring for me. But day by bay I was listening and ones boring tracks became deeper and deeper... I was fantasing... Saw beautiful pictures and stories in my mind. So I've bought some new composers... It was something) there is one thing i regret of... My parents had no money to by me piano or something and put me in a musical school. But... If we will be all a musicians who would be listen to us? joking)

as a painter i can confirm, that to understand art of 20th century you should study and know many conceptual things from semiotics, philosophy, history and litriche. and this is a problem for popularisation of it and temptation to call it degenerative art. here in postsoviet scape we especially feel this. The old generation does not understand not only modern art, but even paintings by Malevich or Kandinsky. The bridge between things like the viewer and complex art is a cool thing. This is what is really needed. But education is also necessary.

In another interview (the interviewer was French but Danny apparently understood every word he said even if he answered in English) he observed that WWI changed culture in a way that culminated simultaneously in jazz music and the musical style of Stravinsky which breaks musical traditions in a similar way although they weren’t influenced by each other.

He didn’t even know how to play an instrument when he was their age. Instead he wanted to be a mad scientist who did radiation experiments and he even won a prize for his work. What he said about wanting classical music to be accessible for all listeners reminds me of what Einstein said; that if you can’t explain a concept in words that a child can understand then you don’t really understand it.
