X5 4.6is Resurrection Part II: Cracking Open The LWX-500 Transfer Case

This was definitely interesting- the X5 4.6is uses an LWX-500 transfer case as opposed to the more common NV-125 transfer case used in the X5 4.4. There's hardly any DIYs on the LWX-500 transfer case so I figured I'd go a little more in detail with this one. I learned a lot from this.

Finger tight and wait an hour. Learned something new for Gasket application. I wasn't sure how to use RTV gasket tube, but now I learned. Thanks

Yep, that's what you do for creating a gasket when there is none. When used with a regular gasket it's not as necessary to wait that long.

Dont forget to relocate your AC drain or you'll be doing this again soon. The drain pipe sits right above this drive shaft/input shaft joint and thats what causes the rust and eventual stripping of the splines.

Yeah, I've heard that too. Not a problem on this X5 though, as I sold it on to my friend who then proceeded to blow up the engine.

The blue link on the chain is for orientation. It will run quieter if the blue link is up

Chains going to make noise cause it's not broken in. Breaks it in and it has the same amount of slack as the used one, which was broken in XD

Hi I got a quick question I have a 2014 550i xdrive and drove into a big puddle then the next day I started to drive it and my axles were clicking I and I felt like when I turned the wheel two both sides the car felt like the wheels were shifting or something so I changed the axles and now no clicking noise but I still feel the shifting could it be that water got in the differential or tranfer case have any idea what ghat can be?

Should I go get the Transfer case fluid change I have 185,000 on the dash not sure it has ever been change

Are there any physical differences between the NV125 and LWX500? Can I use a NV125 instead of the other?

I'm not 100% sure, but maybe the increased torque requires the different transfer case on the 4.6is?

do you know what causes wear on the transfer case? it is hard driving, or just lots of miles

In this case, it's because of a factory driveshaft that was slightly too short and slipped out, causing the splines to be damaged. The transfer case was perfectly fine internally with no visible wear, despite having 213,000 miles.

Interesting video, really mate..the only thing I fucking hate is the loud music.......I watch those videos often on the telly......when the music stops and you speak you have to turn up the volume and turn it back down when you stop speaking.....it is annoying......but it was interesting. cheers mate

I agree wholeheartedly... for whatever reason I didn't notice that when making the videos, but in retrospect, I hate that too.

Hello i have 4.6is 1 week a go a put LPG what you thin?

Not sure how you'd do that, I have no experience with LPG. Regular gasoline is cheap here ($3.27/gallon for 91 octane) so nobody does those conversions in the US.

@@DannysGarage here its 1.45euro per liter gasoline and 1 liter LPG its 0.39 cent i mean i will have any problém in engine?

no problem my 4.4 2001had lpg for 15 yrs,still ok had it2yrs only way to run these at £1,40litre for petrol or £6.40per gallon at 14~16 mpg no go with lpg works out to nearly30mpg,like to see what america would think of paying over $8gall +$340 registration insurance unaffordable under 25 unless very small car,34yr old nurse no convictions 1200$ 20yr old at least $3or4000 very small car.
