So glad they threw him back. Memories just started to flood my mind. Was with my dad in a drift boat when he released 3 upper river reds that were all over 80 in one year. My dad and grandpa both have lost hogs that would hit a 100 or more at the net. They both said they would have released them, but that was at a time when returning huge hogs wasn't a thing. I think they only said that to make themselves feel better😅 We fished tbe Kenai back back in the early 80's to early 90's. Big hogs were caught all the time back then. I feel sick to know how it is today😢 Got a pic me standing next to 93lb hog when I was 12yo. It was bigger than me!!! Im so thankful of all the memories my dad made possible by taking me with him. We not only fished the Kenai river for 15yrs. We fish out in the salt for those same hogs for 3 years in May. Launching off the beach by a tractor. We fished the Queen Charlottes, The Johns.Nehalem, Tillamook, Smith River California. Steelhead in the Quinault from canoes. I miss my dad so much. He's not only the best fisherman I've ever known but the best manIve ever met and my best friend. Until we meet again, dad. Love you.

Two things, that fish died from the exhausting fight on tackle too light, being kept out of the water after a fight and overall being poorly handled. Second red's are sockeye, and they rarely get over 10-12 lbs.

Wow just seeing this out of the box kzfaq.infoUgkxQr1yd4Zc6qJF-scTB6Zb9dQbVpviuRxB recommend I have yet to fish with this set up, but based on the first hands on appeal, I can tell this is going to change the way i pack and carry to a whole new level. If you fish like i do, you know the smaller and less stuff the better. I’ve added a photo of just some of my gear so you can see how serious i am about fishing.

Lived in Wasilla in the early nineties and get dropped off at Burma and walk the river. Advise that a person keep a gun. My first salmon was 45 inches and pounds. Never caught the big one. Lost one that was around ninety pounds. Fish are really fresh. It is less than 14 miles from the ocean. Willow Creek was crazy then. Montana was popular. If you liked combat fishing. Lots of fish near Deshka landing. Think it was off the Big Susitna. My Mom hooked a fish around 65 pounds and panicked and started reeling backwards till the handle came loose then lost the fish. Pretty awesome, it was light 24-7. This place called the Birdhouse was still there. It did not burn down yet. Was a bar with a sawdust floor. Undergarments were all over the ceiling and covered in dollars from everywhere. Might walk in and naked people would be sitting at the bar. Was a landmark. Folklore and history.

Great fish! Brings back memories of my brother and I on the Kenai July 22, 1999. At the end of the day, I caught a 47 inch female silver king and 30 minutes later, my brother caught a 50 inch copper king male. We used Gary Hull from Slammin' Salmon and were his pamphlet cover picture for a long time. Maybe we still are.

I remember the first and only king salmon I’ve seen. I was 14 and my dad and a couple uncles am my cuz all went on a fishing trip in Alaska, around the soldotna area. Anyway we were coming back from a day of fishing on the kenai river. We come up on a weighing stand next to the river. This guy had caught a 54 pound king salmon! I was just amazed at the size of it. I remember though our guide was pissed off because a fish that size, according to him should be let go so it can breed more monster kings. Anyways was an awesome sight I won’t soon forget.

If that salmon was post spawn then releasing it was a waste. It's just going to slowly die anyway. With the fight it had in it, it's flesh was still good and solid. Wild caught salmon is expensive. It's like dumping 50 pounds of prime salmon in the garbage. Should have put it on ice, cleaned it, and put it in the freezer for some good eating. Catch and release is a waste if you know it's going to die. Particularly given the way it was handled. What a waste.

I always face them upstream, holding them gently under the belly & by the tail, moving them easily upstream & downstream, until the fish seems to snap to & forcefully swim away. Got to admit, there's no current to speak of in this stream, but I've seen too many let go like this that turn belly up in just a few moments.

I never realized just how big they can get, I always thought in terms of two to two and a half feet. When bears go after them, they don't look so big which explains just how huge the bears truly are.

Nice catch!! I haven't fished Alaska but I've been on the Kings in Michigan a few times. What a fun fish to catch! I've been on them at the top of their run but prefer getting on them down near the lake when they come into the river nice and green throwing crank baits at them. Lot like throwing a hook on the back bumper of a pickup truck when those big boys tear loose! hahaha Love it!!

I was just a we lab when me father first took me to Alaska. We fished with this same guide. Futher Muggin Nuglies was the name as I recall. His wife made amazing wild game meals and tucked everyone in each night, one at a time. I had many first experiences on that trip.

Apparently there are a lot of people that have never been salmon fishing with a guide...considering the size of the fish, this guy was great. I’ve had guides bark basic fishing instructions the whole time I’m working a fish in, totally annoying, at the end of the day you want punch the guide in the mouth.
