My mother landed a 63lb king by herself and it won the derby that week and with da winnings we were able to stay and fish another week! So your video really brought back that day! Yes indeed - solo fishing for kings can be a little tricky when multiple variables start going wrong (wind, downrigger gear, fish direction, etc.). Wow I can't even imagine dealing with a double! Here in Southeast Alaska we are only allowed 1 rod per angler so I only get doubles when I have others on board. Agree it is sad that the number of larger fish seem to be declining rapidly - a number of factors account for this but the end result is very upsetting. Thanks Oden! It was certainly an adventure navigating all the possible things that can go wrong when battling a king. Your point about staying positive is really important. Sometimes even when it seems like all hope is lost (and the fish runs under or around the boat or near the engine), staying calm and optimistic can help ensure a successful outcome! Plus, even if a big one does get away, it just becomes a great fish story about the "monster that got away" - which surely would have weighed at least 60lbs!!! When targeting kings specifically, I'm almost always trolling less than 1.5 mph and sometimes as slow as .5 or .7 mph. They just can't resist that slow wide roll when the flasher kicks the hootchie or herring in a wide circle! Also - this particular spot doesn't have crazy currents, which allows for more precise low-speed trolling. Are you fishing in Valdez or Juneau? All the best and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

So many things can go wrong when fighting a big king - luckily, this fish made it to the net! This was indeed a beautiful fish - bright chrome! The downrigger's auto-up feature that zeros out at the waterline makes it very easy to focus more on the fish battle and less on clearing the gear. Tight lines my friend!

@@CaptainZac Nice of you to reply Zac, I have been to Alaska twice the second time on my honeymoon my wife and I absolutely love the place, We fished all over the roads would take us in a rented motorhome caught so many fish amazing experience, my wife and I had twin girls 2 years ago and they are a hand full, so we have not travelled or gone fishing since, so I watch youtube clips to get a little satisfaction and dream of when my girls get a little older so we can all go back to travel Alaska and fish.
