For sure, he was under ill-prescribed medication at the time, but I think it really is just his inherent shyness when he's in front of cameras or before strangers. Drugs or no, Brian Wilson is the kind of individual who has a lot going on in his mind emotionally, so I figure it takes more to keep himself together when he's out of his comfort zone. All the more, I'm sure Brian was glad to be singing right beside his brother.

Brian strikes me as somewhat like Asperger's Syndrome in his years after 1977 where he was over medicated and talking more out the side of his mouth, with that brassy flat tone to his voice. I saw his first solo tour (2nd show he did on the tour, Ann Arbor MI 1999) and it was a GREAT show but he was still acting a bit drugged.

@@leannmeixner8073 I have Asperger's and I'm definitely picking up on those vibes too! Even when I watched "Love and Mercy", Dano's characterization of Brian made me go, "Huh. I think he might be in my crew." The way he relates to music, the way he sees the world. Even the sand in the living room screams "sensory needs" to me. Really makes you wonder how different his life would have been if he could have been A) diagnosed and B) received the proper therapy/tools to live with it

There was magic in the air this night long ago. You can still feel it all these years later. How many "bands" could pull this off? I am biased, I suppose. I am 63, the first time I saw them live was Anaheim stadium in the summer of 1976. Brian had not toured in a while, and at some point in the show Mike stepped up to the microphone and said, "ladies and gentlemen, we'd like to welcome to the stage our brother, cousin, and the heart of the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson. The place erupted. It was festival seating, the stage was in center field, my girlfriend and I got there in the wee hours and set our blanket down on second base. When they got rolling with Brian on the keyboards, the big electronic sign flashed "Club level patrons please refrain from dancing and stomping". I turned around, and you could see that level of the stadium moving up and down as people moved with the music. I can still see that in my memory. That girlfriend? We were high school sweethearts. Class of 1976. We married in in 1980. She is still my girl, and we still smile and dance at 63 when we hear these guys sing. They are a big part of the soundtrack of our lives, and our love story.

The nearest thing to this regarding their main competitors - The Beatles (albeit they admired each other) was when the 3 surviving Beatles sat on George's lawn with a ukulele and instantly remembered some song George had written in India. It saddens me that post baby boomer generations grew-up without the wonderment and honest to goodness brilliance of groups like The Beach Boys and other bands of the sixties. Had they been so lucky to have been immersed in such music, there is no doubt they would have had the foundation of beautiful music and the harmony it brought to America, and that things would have been as innocent as my generation. May we never let the magic of The Beach Boys slip the bonds of truly an amazing period in American music history.

If Heaven has a clambake this is how I imagine it Gosh--how beautiful was Carl Wilson's voice. World class harmonies coming through. Brian's falsetto was always in that fine register that required scrupulous discipline to keep in check--especially considering his partial deafness. He pushed it early on and I am sure it was harder as he got older with even more hearing loss that comes with aging, but he is willing to go for it every time here. His love of music shines through. Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston have obvious talent. And that very interesting guy, Mike Love, with his wit and perfect singing voice, musicality the perfect complement to his cousins' guarded personalities and delicate dreamlike falsettos.

Yes they are all happy like little children happy, creative and in wonderment of singing songs they made so successfully. You mental people ,picking on Brian as autistic, are crazy. We should all be nuts or different because Brian was the Bach or Mozart of my growing up.People still love his music when I went to the BB 50th Anniversery at Phoenix College. The amazing thing is I saw 4 generations in love and happy with Brian's and Mike Love's simple and deep lyrics. Beach Boy's music is timeless. My regret is Brian stopped writing and composing. His first wife helped him as a muse,IMO. Dr. Landy helped him because he simply was a junky and out of balance.Real creative and productive artists are different and dance to their own drummer.

The Beach Boys troubled ingenious leader, Brian Wilson, at age 8, insisted to his parents that he be allowed to force younger brother Carl Wilson to learn harmonies when he was just 5. IT WORKED!!!

They were never at war, but they had some financial matters that needed to be settled. Some are inclined to hate for life, but there's no need for that.

So beautiful!! Listening to them talk about their childhood of singing together at their parents' parties; it is easy to see why they have that wonderful harmony. They have been singing together since they were kids and have perfect confidence in each other.

A friend of mine, Ron Coleman.. was a member of The Delroys, who recorded "Bermuda Shorts". He was also one of the writers. I told him it was one of the first songs The Beach Boys sang when they were forming. He was very happy to hear that.

This clip is a genuine cultural video time capsule. For those of us who grew up on the Beach Boys' music, it is a precious gem, significantly better even than the many BB concert videos out there. I watched the "Endless Summer" TV series when it aired originally in the summer of 1989. It already felt nostalgic even back then. Now, having found this video on KZfaq, I'm sure I'll watch it repeatedly. Very many thanks to DanThomasMusic for posting.

I grew up in the 60's. Low key, I always kind of liked the Beach Boys, but I was more of a British invasion fan. A month ago, I watched the movie and then played a live Beach Boys concert on You Tube. I woke up with a smile on my face. Since then, I've been You Tubing the band through the State of Washington, Washington, DC, Paris, Costa Rica, England, etc. My family gets worried now when I (living in Missouri) say things like "take your shoes off because it's not cool to wear shoes while you're surfing." They are like WTF? I am currently happily lost in a Beach Boys time machine. Belatedly, I realize, they weren't just "fun" ... they were groundbreaking geniuses who created a definitive style of music. And nobody could stop them. Not the Beatles, the drug culture or even Charles Manson. The mesh of brothers and cousins was God-ordained. Even the evil father reminds me of a scripture ... "What was intended for bad was turned into good." This year, I have had spinal surgery and two brain surgeries, but my heart is, nonetheless, lately lighter because of the BB's!!!

It's so wonderful to share this hour with them. Knowing the heartbreaking things they have all been through it's easy to see their love for each other got them through it all. Brian looks so proud to have the family all gathered around. Then there's patient and loving Carl who gave stability to his brothers. I love his songs most of all.

Brian telling everybody to clap and whatnot, you get a sense of what it was like to be in the studio with him recording people barking and such during the Pet Sounds and Smile sessions.

This is the first band I ever heard. I was 3 years old. I used to borrow the Beach Boy 45’s from my sister and blast them from her record player. I still like them as much now as I did in 1960, maybe even more.
