Dan Tirels This is not art. Charcoal and acrylic paint collage.
A couple of days ago I received a negative comment on one of my demos, it is not something I would ever respond to and it has very little impact on me or my work, I did want to address the issue and responded in the only positive way I can. I took those very negative comments and used them to create this piece of work.
Please do not be put off by negativity, be confident in the work you make, those who want to put you down are usually those who know very little about the creative process.
PRINT NOW AVAILABLE (for a limited time an A4 print is available from the website shop)
www.dantirels.co.uk/shop/4c8z...
Hope you enjoy this demo.
I will update the details later with info on the materials used.

Thanks for the amazing response to this video. I really appreciate all the fantastic comments and will try my best to reply to as many as I can in the next few days. It was important for me to make this demo and respond to the negative comments in a positive way. I did this not just for me, but for anyone who has had to face negativity and to receive opinions from those who wish to put them down. I make these videos to encourage others to have ago, whatever your artistic capabilities, I have had hundreds of comments from people who have gained confidence in their skills and from tutors who have shared the lessons with their students. Nobody should put up with words that are used to belittle them and unfortunately the internet does provide opportunity for these keyboard bullies to remain anonymous. I never speak in the demo videos because I feel the visual language is more powerful and enables better concentration of the process, using actual printed words in this artwork was a revelation and I think I will explore this further, my only regret is that I did not translate the words into more languages. Thanks again for all your support, its filled my (He)ART with inspiration.

"This is not art" ... indeed ... it's 'Heart'. Seems to me when freedom in and of art is challenged or criticized in some way it becomes revolutionary to continue to express it. I think you've brilliantly captured and reflected such a force here, Mr. Tirels. I love everything you do...continue.

Excellent response to the trolls and uninformed. When I ran across your channel, I shared your techniques with my students before I left teaching here in the states. They loved it. Especially using items around their homes to reuse and make something intriguing when many don’t have the means to buy “fancy” art supplies. THAT is artistic inspiration. Thank you for inspiring us and inviting us to hang with you while you play and create 💖

Only inexperienced, unimaginative or social media driven people see imagery as needing to be 'realistic' and 'handed to them' to be 'art'. I absolutely think of your work as art!! Conceptual and imaginative . Your mark making, layering, multi dimensional imagery is deeply engaging. I get to interpret the colours, shapes and meanings from my perspective and I have to think about what the work may have meant to you in making it. Please don't let the internet 'vegetables' change your art practice..... 41.8K people like it as it is!!

On another artist's video I saw a comment about the work being a "waste of supplies" just because they didn't care for the style. I thought it was so silly this person felt that way. Someone finding meaning, happiness and fun in whatever art they choose to make is never a waste.

Thanks very much I appreciate your very kind comments and response to this demo. I didn't think to hard about posting this and the idea was formed even before I had finished reading the original comment. The finished work will eventually find it's way onto my wall and I really hope the video encourages anyone to ignore the words of those who wish to belittle them. The person has been hidden from the channel, this allows them to continue with their negative comments but they will never be seen.

Your videos and ideas have been a real inspiration for me and long may they continue. Sometimes I wish that YT would just turn off comments as it’s one of the worst sites for trolls, immature people and idiots…
@DanTirels

Turning off comments is an option for me on this channel, it's just as easy for me to remove anything that I find insulting or offensive and KZfaq will never allow comments to be seen that go too far. I get very few negative comments and that is something to be thankful for. KZfaq is a big place when 1000's of videos are posted every second, there is plenty to find of interest to be found. I hope this demo might discourage those who wish to post negative comments, but somehow I doubt it.

Please never listen to negative comments, they mean nothing. As artists we are our own worst critics, we always know when something has worked or if it has failed in some way. Bravo, Dan! You took the high road for a win-win on negativity and those who spread it. It has been really great watching you at work and you’ve helped me out of a long period of dissatisfaction with my own work. I started by making quicker decisions and adopting a ‘just do it’ attitude. I’ve been going with my gut, working faster and not second guessing. No more agonizing, I work playfully and joyfully and am so much happier with the results. I especially loved the day you took your cute dog on the beach walk and found materials to work with. I think it was Andrew Wyeth who said “I never go out to make a painting, I just go out to take a walk.” Thank you for sharing what you do that inspires so many of us!

Blimey, Dan - I don't think I'd have been so philosophical lol. Criticism is one thing - the opinion of an individual (with or without knowledge of the subject at hand) is another. Unless criticism is in some way constructive - then it is worthless. Unless someone has specifically asked for an opinion - it is often just an unwanted blurt of egotistic rudeness (and the expressions used in this case - somewhat purile). Keep doing art everyone - and don't let anyone steal your joy xx

I really have a problem with negativity and will always do anything I can to try and turn this around, typing a few negative comments on a keyboard is easy, posting those comments that have no value and are only meant to cause offense should simply be ignored or in this case used to make an even more inspirational statement. Dan, when I look at some of the so-called 'art' hanging in high-end galleries or winning awards, it brings home what art really SHOULD be ~ and, quite frankly, you've got it in bucket loads! Art is creativity in constant practice and yours is a joy to watch. You have a distinctive style all of your own and, for your generosity in sharing, I thank you. This particular piece, "This is Not Art", is the perfect response to negativity because it demonstrates that you have a genuine artist's voice when there's something important to say. We are all here, and we are all listening ...

Thank you for the good example. A lot of us get discouraged by criticism, and this one was a troll. I guess some people want to make others unhappy if they can. I will follow your lead and make art from people's ugly comments!

Somehow I missed this video - I will say with ALL CERTAINTY that your prints/paintings/sketches are indeed ART! I was fortunate enough (even blessed) to have the opportunity to buy one of your originals and there hasn’t been a day since I had it framed that it hasn’t brought me pleasure and a smile! Everyone who visits and sees it loves it and I send them the link to the video where you made this piece and it creates new Dan Tirels fans!! Along with this gorgeous print you’ve taught me so much about art, recommended books that now sit in my home library, traveled with you around the English country/seaside (armchair from Texas) and enjoyed your furry companions- I cannot thank you enough for the years of enjoyment I’ve received from your generous sharing!

Thanks so much for your very kind comments, I always enjoy hearing from those who have been inspired by the videos. This video was made to encourage others to ignore negativity and from the comments I get, it seems to have worked. Thanks for buying some of my work, it really is appreciated and I am pleased to know that you have introduced others to the channel. Thanks for watching.

Congrats. Thank you for such a brilliant response. You are an inspiration. I wish I had had such a response when my father use to constantly goad me with that same ridiculous “This is not art”!! Fortunately it didn’t put me off!

GRACIAS

I always stop and watch when I see a new thumbnail from you, and I am not an artist. I am inspired by you and love watching what you create and how. That seems like a pretty good definition of the effect a true artist (in any genre) would have on folks, is my lil opinion. I’m glad your heart is also big and inspiring.

I love this.....and the words are so cruel and hurtful.....when you have been endlessly generous with your time, knowledge, skills and inspiration all through the miserable covid isolation. The cruelty of posts like that tempers my otherwise huge enjoyment of how to turn negativity into something completely different. How to turn mean spirited nastiness into a statement about heart.....I love it. Thank you.

Thank you. I hope that this video will encourage others to disregard such negative comments, artists are always going to have to deal with critics, in fact artists themselves are often very critical of their own work. I try not to respond to these kind of comments because they do not deserve my time but I felt compelled to create this artwork in the hope the statement it makes is more powerful than the one the art critic was trying to make.

You sir, are my favorite artist on youtube. I cannot believe anyone would have made negative comments about your work. the only explanation I can come up with is that they are part of the paint-by-numbers tribe. Consider the source my friend and take their criticism as a compliment. I actually feel your work in the intuitive part of myself ......and this is always what I strive to access before I begin creating. Thank you for sharing your process. I find it inspiring.

No matter what the "joy killers' say-- you will always shine dearest Dan. Unfortunately, some live in "the dream of me" and their hearts are temporarily locked, unable to appreciate your love and your willingness to share your knowledge. Unfortunately, keyboard cowards suffer in the darkness they create for themselves. Please know...your art lightens my life and this world needs beacons of love like you.

Sadly, there are many negative, rude, selfish, senseless (should I go on?) people in the world. They are their own reward-they will probably never know true joy in creativity. The joy of interaction with like-minded people. Shameless people never learn (neither do stupid people!). You are in my top 5 KZfaq artists that I follow. Sometimes you’re even number 1. 😊 By the way-I love this piece!

Since the day one that I discover your channel, I became your disciple. I have been incorporating your techniques in my collage work and is going to another maximum level. I really loved the way you answered to the haters out there who are uneducated about the real purpose and many perspectives of art. They just have a heart full of hate. People who were born with a heart packed with those words you used on this magnificent work you created. At least, they can be the protagonists and the inspiration for art. 😊 Keep teaching us every day new things.
