Supposedly Jimi said that about Phil Keaggy (Glass Harp band and a Christian artist for over 40 years) on a late night talk show. Jimi died a few years before Phil became known nationally.

i'm an old, crusty, retired electrician. i probably have more years pulling wire than Da Real Adogg has breathing. but i have noticed a lot of "first time hearing..." videos lately of Roy Clark, Glen Campbell and even one of Queen. And it's nice to know that talent, no matter how old the performers are, is still appreciated.

Maleguena is typically played on an acoustic guitar and very few American musicians have even attempted to play it. Rot Clark is the only artist I've ever seen play it on an electric guitar. He was simply amazing with anything with strings and had a comedic side that was absolutely charming.

Look up Chet Atkins Maleguena. He did it on electric in 1963. Roy took it to the next level for sure.

Mr Clark was one of my Dad's fishing buddies. In the 60s When Mr Clark played the Southern Maryland Circuit, He would always fish out of Benedict Md with my Dad and friends. They would rent a little john boat with a little outboard and have blast catching Blue. When I was little I woke up at 5 am because they were all laughing, telling jokes while stringing up the rods. I had no idea who he was till I saw him again years later on the TV show He-Haw. Then my Dad, also named Roy told me the story. RIP Dad. And Roy Clark.

Roy Clark was a great entertainer, humble man & super talented. He was both a singer & musician. His guitar & banjo playing are legendary. A lot of musicians & artists today could learn a lot from his style & technique. Glen Campbell was also an underrated guitarist. But these men paved the way for a lot of musicians today.

I always wrote him off from hee haw. But if he can play malaguena like this! Wow. If you’re ever around El mariachi and they ask for a request always shout malaguena. They all know it and aren’t used to playing it expecting tourists just say something like play something from the top 10 radio

I'm thrilled you found Roy Clark. The style he's playing in is called "Flamincan Guitar." He's playing with a single pick, what the original Spanish artists used multiple finger picks to accomplish.

Roy Clark has a "Ghost Riders in the Sky" video that he absolutely shreds on a 12 string. There are also clips of him and Glen Campbell playing duets. One more suggestion would be Roy and his cousin, Buck Trent playing "Dueling Banjos". And yes, Roy is just as good on banjo as he is on guitar. He could also play fiddle and most other stringed instruments.

I saw Roy Clark on the Tonight Show as a kid. He shredded Ghost Riders in the Sky. When he was done, he sat next to Johnny Carson. Johnny said ‘I don’t know how many people in the audience noticed this. You broke a string half way through, didn’t you?’ Roy held up his guitar and a broken string flapped in the breeze. Nobody could tell. I wish I could find that video again...

My grandfather and Roy were friends before my grandfather passed. They belonged to the same Masonic Lodge in Oklahoma for years. I had the privilege as a kid to sit with him and my grandfather at many of the social gatherings put on for families of the lodge members. You would never have known, even then, that he was a celebrity. He was just a regular Joe to everyone else there. So humble and kind. And of course a very, very talented man.

I can play anything with strings... Roy seems like the reason strings were invented. The man was a musician in the truest sense. He was a master on his instrument, he was respectful to all work, he was happy doing it and made people happy when he did. My uncle, before he was killed in Vietnam was just making a big name in Tennessee, he played with and was friendly with the Hee Haw cast, lots of the Grand Ole Opry regulars, Roy, String Bean, Jerry Reed, there was close to 3000 people at his funeral. My father and grandfather were also pickers, loved and respected Roy very much.

The fact that he’s using a pick is what makes this so incredible for me. Most guitarists use finger techniques and an acoustic guitar. To accomplish this on an electric and with a pick was miraculous!

Roy Clark is a fabulous artist! This was purely guitar, but he has a wonderful voice. (OK, "had"...he passed several years ago.) Listen to him doing "Yesterday When I Was Young" and "Thank God and Greyhound". He was one of the stars (along with Buck Owens) of Hee Haw. (My cousin was in his band during that time.)

Roy Clark was one of the greatest guitar, banjo,fiddle players of all time! If it had strings he could play it. Plus a beautiful voice listen to him sing Yesterday! Sadly he passed away in 2018 at age 85 he is now in the big mans band with Glen and so many other greats who preceded him. Rest in peace Roy you left us with so many awesome memories.

Roy Clark does the same song on an acoustic and it's fantastic. Acoustic guitar's don't forgive mistakes and he plays it perfectly. Watch him do it on an episode of The Odd Couple. Wow! Also, Charo plays this song pretty good too on her acoustic.

Absolutely! Roy, in that episode, made that acoustic guitar ring like a bell and sing with a joy that was wondrous to watch. You can see the exact moment when Jack Klugman and Tony Randall go from their characters to stunned and respectful along with the studio audience. When Tony flops back, that's a genuine reaction to the performance....plus his expression too.

Mr. Clark once said that he could not play every instrument and be good at it, just any instrument with strings on it! I believed him!! RIP One of the best to ever do it!!!

When he was starting out he was known as "Lightening Fingers" for his hand speed on the guitar. His duet with Glen Campbell on Ghost Riders in the Sky is a masterclass on how to play the guitar at the highest level.

Roy Clark passed away in 2018 at the age of 85. One of the best. Check out "12th Street Rag" and "Ghost Riders In the Sky". He also played fiddle and banjo.

And fiddle and anything with strings...and seems I saw him play harmonica once long ago. His family had a band and he'd grab each instrument and mess with it until he figured it out...no formal lessons

You should see Roy Clark play this on an acoustic guitar!!! He may that guitar "sing" doing stuff with his right hand (like muting certain strings but not other strings, doing the percussion) at the same time his right hand was a blur!

It fills my heart with happiness that you young people are discovering and now featuring the likes of Roy Clark. At the height of his success, he was invited onto a show called The Odd Couple which at the time was one of the top rated TV shows in the country. He was also a featured guitarist and invited to play at Carnegie Hall. It is true that Roy along with Glenn Campbell were really guitarist. They also looked up to a gentleman by the name of Chet Atkins. You want to have some fun one night you may or may not have already done so if you want to hear a voice that'll blow your mind listen to Jay and the Americans "Car Mia" or "This Magic Moment". Thanks for sharing

Lawrence Welk Show, Hee Haw Followed by the Wonderful World of Disney ! We had sunday diner at my grandparents every week. That was the Sunday night line up, typically one or more of us three kids would carried out to the car, already asleep. Good times and great childhood memories. Thanks for the HeeHaw reminder

Roy Clark was a virtuoso on any stringed instrument, guitar, banjo, violin, you name it. He was a good singer, and most of his most impressive work was when he was goofing around, making fun of himself with goofy faces! There's a whole rabbit hole of his work you need to check out, especially if you watch his duets with other banjo players!

My mom and aunt both loved Roy and had several albums featuring him as well as watching him on "Hee-Haw". His guitar work is often overlooked by his banjo playing (which he seems to be slightly more renowned for. In the 90's I met him at a guitar store and seemed to be the only person who recognized him so I got a few minutes to chat with the master. He gave me some advice and tips to improve my own playing. I was dumbfounded.

I remember watching Hee Haw as a kid with my parents on Saturday nights at 6:00 p.m. every week for the musical guest and comedy skits. When Roy Clark would play any instrument in the setting with everyone around him you could see the crowd around him react is suprise and amazement of his string instrument abilities.

To my discredit, I never knew about Roy Clark until around the time he died (had never been a country fan). I came to find out that the guy is a frigging legend, who could melt anything with strings. And he gave so many musicians a start. He was a gentleman and had no equal as a musician. Similar to Glen Campbell (another legend), who I also didn't know a lot about until more recently. The rocker Alice Cooper in an interview a few years ago said Campbell (who was a friend of his) was one of the Top 5 guitar players in the world. Both these men were way ahead of their time, on a 6 string or 12 string. Now I've watched a number of both their performances. I sit there with my mouth open, speechless, wondering how they are doing it.

Everybody always classifies great guitar players into their own specific genres but if you were just going to make a list of greatest guitar players. I think Roy Clark would have to be in the conversation

First off, kudos to you for looking past current music to that of the past; there is so much ‘gold’ out there from the past. This was back in the day when you didn’t have autotune or ways to correct timing etc., you either triumphed or fell on your face especially in a live performance. Roy Clark was looked upon as a guitar virtuoso; there are many performances where he was clowning around but the guitar work was both serious and stunning. Again, thanks for having an open mind a giving respect when it’s truly due…

I’ve had the honor of meeting Roy on several occasions at his golf tournament in Oklahoma. The song is pronounce Mal-uh-gwania. It’s usually played by marching bands. I was a member of the Pride of Oklahoma Marching band and we played it. It’s a lot of fun and loud!

Marching bands may play it... but it is actually usually played on a classical guitar. You have the pronunciation in correct... as it is the name of a Spanish dance that is similar to a fandango. Ma-la-gena is closer. Roy Clark does a fantastic job with a flat pick and an electric guitar! Absolutely amazing! My favorite rendition of the song is by Charo. it's a masterclass in technique combined with passion.

Roy Clark was an amazing musician. This was one of us his signature songs, that he did several times. He had several great songs, I'd suggest: 12th Street Rag Duelin' Banjos Under the Double Eagle Folsom Prison Blues (duet with Johnny Cash) For singing: Yesterday When I was Young Thank God and Greyhound Probably his two biggest hits. Finally I'd like to second the suggestion that you check out Glen Campbell's guitar skills. His version of the "William Tell Overture" is amazing. He played it on both an acoustic and a 12 string electric, either is mind blowing.

Malagueña was written by the Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona: it was written for piano and although Roy Clark was a truly great guitarist the best versions of this tune are done by pianists.

Roy Clark- Won his 1st state championship a t 14 playing the banjo and never looked back. Had a near crippling shyness but overcame that through his God given musical talent.

Roy Clark was the first artist I ever saw 'Live' in concert. He had a special guuest with him: Suzi Quatro, who was equally Brilliant - but i'll never forget the first time (from a short distance away in 1981 at Roy's Travelling Music Show) i saw him play and i mean really 'play' that guitar ... The ability too remember and hit every note by heart especially this song takes a skill few will ever obtain. He was a master guitar player. Besides that he always carried a sense of humor that made everyone laugh. He was a Godly man as well. When you truly love your work and enjoy the benefits it brings you will have a very blessed life. Thanks for sharing brother. I haven’t seen him in over 40 years. This really brings back good memories!

Roy Clark was often thought of as a hick because of his time on hee haw but he is one of the greatest guitarists ever. He could pretty much play anything with strings.

I worked with "Roy" for 2 years and he loved the story above because he knew how it REALLY happened as he was told by "Eric Clapton" himself. This quote came from the 1969-1973 timeframe. Eric was asked by an interviewer, "what does it feel like to be the greatest guitar player in the world"? Eric responded, "I wouldn't know, you need to ask "Billy Gibbons" (guitarist for ZZ Top) because he is the best guitar player I have ever met! Billy was just starting up the R&R ladder at that time but was well-known for his fantastic guitar work even before he was famous. This "quote" has been applied many times to various artists over the decades with much validity. My answer would be, who is the best guitarist in the world? Hands down, FRANK ZAPPA.

Some of the most versatile musicians in the world are country musicians and Roy was one of the most amazing. There is a video of Roy doing this song on an old TV show, "The Odd Couple" using an acoustic guitar. It is even more amazing. I would also like to put in a vote to check out his version of 12th Street Rag. Another amazing musician I'd like to recommend is Gatemouth Brown. One of my favorite performances of his is the funky "Okie Dokie Stomp" from the "Lighting In A Bottle" concert. Is it country, blues, jazz? IMO it's all that and more.

Roy Clark was a regular on The Grande Ole Opry, the country music showcase, but he could do alot more than just country. Glenn Campbell was another regular who was also a successful country artist, but, with his roots as a top studio guitarist, Campbell was an awesome and extremely versatile guitar player who could WOW the best of them. Both living Legends. Both worth going back to hear.

Not only was he a master of guitar, he played many other instruments. Humble, and kind. And this piece of music itself seems to written for Roy to come along and play it. It's a beautiful piece in itself, that if you can put his skill aside, and catch the piece itself, it can almost make you weep; a very emotional one. Thanks! Love your reaction ♥️
