A look at the many stories of Daredevil losing the fight, including everything from his early battles against Electro and Namor to his Blind Alley run-in with the Hulk to more spiritual defeats in Born Again and the modern dark era of DD, this video analyzes why Daredevil's stories of defeat and loss make him Marvel's greatest character.

Daredevil is my favorite Marvel hero because he struggles. He gets knocked down, but eventually gets back up. Plus he has a disability. His other senses are heightened, but his blindness appeals to me. As a man who has cerebral palsy, I definitely think Matt is an inspiration!
@Dhampir101980
@Dhampir101980 11 ай бұрын
Yup. Same! That’s what makes Daredevil great. Having a disability is his default state, but Matt himself never treats it as such, and the few times that his sight has been restored, it actually makes him a less effective hero. That’s why I hate that DC made Barbara batgirl again instead of keeping her as Oracle, one of the only prominent disabled heroes in the DC universe 😢

As a Catholic in the legal field, Matt Murdock similarly inspired me, I mean his interpretation of social obligation is genuinely profound, yes he beats up people, but he’s also very gentle and understanding of drug addicts, sex workers, immigrants, and even petty criminals, very Christ like in that sense

One of the most underrated Daredevil stories occurs in the Secret Wars II saga. Here, Matt regains his sight thanks to the Beyonder's powers. However, that miracle causes him to lose his sensorial skills. Despite being overjoyed at the idea of seeing again, Matt realizes that New York's safety is more important than his eyes, so he asks the Beyonder to blind him again, a request the god grudgingly grants him

My favorite time Matt loses is during the Waid run, issue #7, when he's caught in the ice storm with a school bus full of blind kids. He ultimately fails to guide them to safety, but his persistence and compassion inspire the kids to build the makeshift sled and drag him the rest of the way when he passes out from exhaustion. He loses, but is ultimately saved by people he was kind to along the way. That's the stuff I love seeing in Daredevil comics, and you see it in nearly every significant run on the character.

I think one of the reasons DD is so compelling is not only the layers of his character and unpredictability of his stories, but the world he inhabits; there is a touch of swashbuckling adventures, noir, magical realism, police procedural, soapy melodrama and even legal drama in his stories, which steers away from typical hero/villain confrontations.

One thing that I really enjoy about Daredevil is that a lot of the runs with the character don't really retcon nor contradict one another like Spider-Man comics, from Bendis' run to Zdarsky's run it all feels like one continuing story that still deals with the impact of the previous runs

@@yigitcansonmez978to be fair, Waid's ends in such a satisfying note that could, realistically, end the character's journey, that I don't really know how they could've made more without sacrificing much. @@lucasvalle4841I actually like Charles Soule's run on the character, because unlike Zeb Wells' Spider-Man comic which does a similar thing, it doesn't erase any of the developments Matt had throughout the previous runs, and actively tries to give him room to grow as a person, especially with the character of Blindspot who I think was a great addition

Daredevil is my all time favorite hero, and the only one with comics that I enjoy binge reading. I think what makes him so amazing is how human he is, from how he handles loss and his will power, and man does he struggle so much lmao, almost as much or more than Spider-Man. My favorite showcase (besides Elektra's passing) of how he handles loss is Karen Page's death, on how distraught he is, on the verge of suicide, yet keeps doing what he must, to honor her. But all the arcs and stories are my favorite.

Great video. With regards to "Stan Lee"...the Marvel Method means he was never the sole author of any work credited to him in that time. In the case of Daredevil, it's documented that Wally Wood was the main author of his DD stories and Wood noted that he not only plotted out and drew the comic but wrote in dialogue suggestions at the back. When he checked the final issue, he noted that Lee barely changed anything in some issues and in the Namor issue changed nothing at all, meaning those are, all intents and purposes, fully Wood issues. But the lack of credit and compensation as writer led to Wood leaving DD.

I'm glad to see more Daredevil content on this channel again. And its vindicating to see the Namor fight brought up. I kinda bounced off of Silver Age DD when I was on like, a quest to read everything (I'll do it eventually, but sometimes its a bit much to take), and it was like, the first moment that really sold the element of vulnerability to me. It always stood out as like, evocative of the character's strengths. Continuing to struggle and fight against an opponent he can't win against, and taking what victories he can get through that. (That's kinda what I like about the back half of Zdarsky's run actually. (I'm still loving this run as much as I did for those first 20 issues) There's this tragic irony in that like, The Hand, a ninja cult led by a demon from the pits of Hell, is a more solvable problem for Matt than the cruelty of the American prison system.)

I'll be honest: when I first heard you were moving on from comics, I was in some way a little bittersweet about it. It was your Walt Simonson Thor video that got me introduced to you and I got to check out now some of my all-time favorites thanks to your videos. However, I quickly was alright with it mainly because I loved your work even when it wasn't about comics. Also totally get the burnout; Marvel and DC characters are stuck in a loop of never-ending stories (plus all the stupid fighting in toxic fanbases for certain characters). But it's in that loop where Daredevil stands out. None of the runs feel like instant resetting of Matt Murdock's status quo (except the Soule run) but rather pushing the character forward in his downward spiral. If anything out of the Big Two, DD is the ultimate character trapped in his own Dante's Inferno that he can't escape. Either way, great video as always. And if this is your true closing chapter on comics, this feels like a great coda to your comic videos. Some will still whine and complain that they're not around anymore, but real fans know your work is not defined by one thing. You do what you love and it will show in the final video. And to me, nothing is better than another Matt Draper video. Also, totally agree with the Zdarsky run. The first 25 issues were some of the best of the character imo; but once Elektra takes the mantle, along with Devil's Reign and now the Red Fist Saga it's just becoming a little too out of left field to what Zdarsky was introducing in the first chunk of the run. Marco Checchetto's art still rocks

Having said all that, I'd be curious to see if you'd be open to exploring other genres in comics (like you did with Head Lopper or My Favorite Thing is Monsters). It's tough because I love your comics content and don't want it to go away forever but I also understand the burnout... Spider-Man's usually the guy people think of whenever a superhero has constant hard times in life (it's literally a term called "Parker Luck"), but Daredevil often have it worse because not only doesn't have the powers to compensate some of his issues, he's also disabled which adds more fuel to how depressing his story actually is. That's why it's great seeing Matt fight in-spite of his issues because it perfectly demonstrates his will as a fighter for justice.

When I was at a moody point in my life few years back, I started reading Daredevil for the first time with Vol. 2. It was very depressing reading Matt's life constantly spiraling downward, but I loved how throughout those struggles he still kept pushing forward. It was why I got exited to reach Mark Waid's run, as I heard about the more positive change in tone. And after finishing it, I've found that's the beauty of his run: it's a change in tone, but not narrative. It definitely has its dark moments that harkens back to his struggles from before, while still re-enforcing the promise of hope and redemption, which has been the underlying core theme behind all of DD's greatest stories. Mark Waid's run is my favorite Daredevil run (and probably my favorite superhero comic ever), so I'm glad to hear it's your personal favorite DD run too Matt! Also, I really appreciated your thoughts in the latter half of the video. Modern superhero comics under "The Big 2" can be largely underwhelming, with the lack of any real stakes or cyclical character arcs making me feel like I've either outgrown or gotten bored of them. Even Daredevil has his own share of repetitiveness at times. But the best advice I've come across is to follow the creators, not the characters. I've been giving Waid's other works a shot and I've been loving what he's doing right now with Dan Mora at DC. World's Finest and Shazam are great! I always loved this channel for the Daredevil content but I'll be sure to watch the other vids to expand my horizons more. Great video as always!

I TOTALLY agree with your assessment of the last portion of Zdarsky's run. I don't buy into the idea that Matt would go full "let's abolish prisons, everyone can be rehabilitated." He's been in the crime fighting business too long to fall for that naive thinking. He knows the system is flawed but absolutely necessary! He's not a "let's tear it all down!" That's actually probably much closer to Frank's logic. I think Chip basically allowed his own politics to influence his writing a little too much. You can't force your views onto an established character.

I did a slight deep dive into Daredevil earlier this year as I wanted to get some background before checking out Chip Zdarsky's stuff (I'll admit that part of my interest came from seeing his fight scene with US Agent, partly because I love DD's bearded ninja look), so I went back...before Waid, I believe, though it was definitely Mark Waid's run that connected for me - I'm a big fan of it for that more hopeful and brighter tone tempered with tough trials for Matt. Charles Soule's had some interesting stuff but never quite connected with me. I can understand the take on the Zdarsky run - even if I love its art and am quite interested in the political/sociological focus of early times (as well as where things went after Devil's Reign), it is a darker, more serious period. One thing I especially enjoyed was watching Elektra take up the Daredevil role, seeing her thoughts and being somewhat won over by Matt's ideology, it was sweet. I also think he found a neat use of Mike, a character who didn't work for me when he was introduced under Soule (I believe).

I understand your criticisms regarding the bleak tones of Charles Soule and Chip Zdarsky's runs, but I still think they're quality is top notch.

I'm sorry to ask you this, but how do you download your comic book pages for videos like this? I'm trying to do the same but...I can't find how to do that.

I get the idea with superhero comics, when I look at mine backlog of comics or these that I still read they are mostly Villain comics (Darth Vader series), Hellboy world, Head Lopper, Birdking, Kill SIx Billion Demons, and things that offer something interesting like House of Slaughter/Something is killing children, Godzilla and so on. More the niche and weird and settings I'm interested in. Like Elric from Titan Comics, or Conan stories. As of superhero comics, Atro City still holds my interest but these are less superhero stories and more stories with superheroes in them or as a background. Hell whenever Kurt Busiek is creating something I will read it, even if it is a car manual. I started reading Rogue Sun, and it seems interesting, but the goal is to make main character traditional hero, I hope I am mistaken, but we will see.

As somebody whose first DD run was Mark Waid, it was pretty frustrating to see Charles Soule pretty set right back to square one.

Just recently became a Daredevil fan when i started the Bendis run and went on to read majority of his runs, I dont think I've ever met a character like Daredevil even in the comic medium where every facet of his character is so fascinating to dissect
