We thought we would take the 60 mile drive to McCarthy, as shown in the TV show Edge of Alaska, to explore the area and hike to Root Glacier. Come along as we hit McCarthy!

We did that road in 2000 when it was just a railroad bed with the rails pulled out, Had a flat tire from a rail spike. Today it is 100x's better

There was a tv show called Edge of Alaska. Was about the people that live in McCarthy. Also the Adventures of A+K on KZfaq spent a summer in Alaska and did a great job documenting the area!

Thanks for sharing your adventure on the McCarthy Road and Root Glacier. Four days after your drive (June 02), a small earthquake broke the McCarthy Road just east of Chitina. That break delayed our van excursion by an hour on the outbound in the morning. On the return trip, our experienced driver left the van on the eastern side of the break, we walked carefully through the broken pavement, and another van spirited us late to our lodge. It took several days for the road to open fully. Here's hoping that the unsettled Alaskan landscape treated you good folks well.

Nice to see a little of that area again. I dig some video production work for that park service there. The has not needed any rebuild done yet in 1995. The Glacier have gone way back since then. Odd how the road shifted , along with the melt off there might have been a quake to get liquidation. I doing even remember that single lane bridge, that’s fun.
