Call that occidental inhibition-ism. We once had a middle-east band coming to a festival in my hometown, they were pretty good too, somewhat similar in beat, but with a bit more melody. Their lead signer / percussionist soon noticed that no one was getting up to dance. It was bothering him something fierce. So at first they upped the beat and energy of it all. But no one did more than headbanging. Next step was to invite people to dance, but even that was not enough... So they began to, while playing, fetch people from the crowd, get them off of their collective asses, and bring them gently to the fray. At some point nearly half the public was dancing. Considering how public-shy and isolated people are in this corner of the world, that was already somewhat impressive. Remember we aren't speaking of a clubbing audience here, but an ethnic festival. So that mean half of a public containing young and old, intellectuals and hipsters, hippies and musicians themselves, some ordinary folks, etc... But still, they kept looking at the room as if something was wrong. So they pushed the energy up a notch, again... soon two third of the room were dancing. At about three quarter of the show though, it seemed as if two third of the crowd was the best they could get, the lead finally admitted that he just couldn't know how we could possibly be sitting still; in the middle of a tune. That was some cultural clash right there. While I was amazed at his capacity to get nearly everyone dancing, he was dejected to not get a stronger reaction. To be fair, hadn't I been held back by my wife, I'd probably would have jumped right in too. But there you have it, be it Paris or north America, lots of occidental folks learn to enjoy music sitting still, while doing something else. We have somewhat lost the reflex to dance. And that doesn't sound like a good thing.
