Filmed over two days, the first part concentrates on the section of line between Siliguri and Tindharia on 5th March 2018. The second section, filmed on 6th March 2018, covers the section between Tindharia and Darjeeling.
Finally, there is a brief look around the line's workshops at Tindharia.

As a young lad growing up in British India, living in Calcutta at the time. I had the privilege to be sent to boarding school GOETHALS MEMORIAL SCHOOL, KURSEONG, 30 km. from Darjeeling. Back in the day, the Toy Train ran regular services from Siliguri to Darjeeling. When we arrived at Siliguri after a 'two-day' journey from Calcutta the students were always excited to board the Toy Train reserved especially for us. We had our own 'Siding' a special STOP at the entrance to our school. As you can imagine the Toy Train full to capacity with very mischievous young boys it was a nightmare for the teachers to keep us under control. 2018, I have just recently visited the school which stands on a hilltop and clearly visible from the train with a large sign painted on a wall GOETHALS MEMORIAL SCHOOL. Misty water-colored memories of the way we were Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind Smiles we gave to one another for the way we were Can it be that it was all so simple then Or has time rewritten every line If we had the chance to do it all again Tell me, would we? Could we? THANKS FOR A WONDERFUL VIDEO.

Same here, Haemish. Was in Goethals in the early 70s. Could never get over the thrill of the 'Toy' Train - jumping off, running down the khud, and catching the train again as it came round the bend!

What a lovely video Peter. Just rode the DHR from NJP to Darjeeling. It was an experience out of some fairy tale book. The Rang Tong station was amazing. It suddenly appears after a curve like magic. Tindharia is where the UP train says "Hi" to the DOWN one. The loops, Z reverse, overlap of the Hill Cart Road, I have never experienced anything like this before, boy Sheldon Cooper would have loved this ride 😊. Each station in this route is mesmerizing. The Mahanadi, Sonada and Tung on the road, the reverse of Kurseong, the Batasia loop guarding the Gorkha memorial in the backdrop of Kunchenzonga, the summit at Ghoom finally resting at Darjeeling and last but not the least, Sukna where the climb starts. Each moment of that journey flashed before me via this video. Thanks so much for this.

How wonderful, truly fantastic filming. How many cameramen did you use to make this great film? Brought many happy thoughts as I travelled this line in 2010. A lot of it at the time was closed due to landslip. Has that all been cleared ? so where does it not start from? THANK YOU for the pleasure you have given me. Richard.
@peterbrackenbury
@peterbrackenbury 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comments, pleased it gave you some pleasure. The filming was all done by myself. It was taken whilst I was on a Darjeeling Tours 'Indian Magic' trip; we had a bus so that tour participants could either travel on the train or photograph/video it from the lineside. I chose the latter so I could film the train from the lineside, after each shot the bus would overtake the train in order to get the next shot, etc. At the time of filming (March 2018) the line had recently reopened throughout from NJP and Darjeeling following landslides in the previous two or three years.
