I came across this previously painted buffet and decided to apply Retique It on the top instead of stripping the paint and sanding to bare wood. Retique It is a major time saver!

My kit has the light color primer, dark kona stain, and a epoxy top coat if needed. Do not have a dark and light primer ? I like the way yours turned out however do I need to order a dark primer also ? I think you are running the graining tool through your light primer. The instructions I have is to use one coat of stain after two coats of primer are on the use the grain tool. When you use the grain tool on your third coat of light primer after not sure what you used on your first two coats. I like it because the grain tool shows off the dark primer under your light color primer. Then your stain. Trying to see what you used on your first two coats. I also bought the Varathane stain Kona to coat after.

Once the final coat of Retique It is dry, do you sand before staining to remove the texture left by the graining tool.?

So you start with the traill edge of the tool resting on the surface, then as you pull across the surface and reach the point where you want to create the grain irregularity, you roll the tool to the leading edge , then back to the trail while continuously dragging it ?
@deerrunrevamps
@deerrunrevamps 11 ай бұрын
Yes. Start at one end and drag it across the surface. When you rock it from side to side while dragging it, you'll get a different size knot and irregularities. When you drag it straight across keeping the tool level, you'll get a more uniform look. After each pass, wipe the tool off, then do it again

Deer Run Revamps LLC Furniture Refinishing Services I should have been more clear. I’ve patched it already with DAB plastic wood filler and it’s been sanded smooth. Also, if I use the Varathane premium fast drying stain will i use an oil based top coat or can I use a water based top coat? I hate working with oil base but I just don’t love any of the retique stains! The closes one I like is their “weathered” which is a gray but it seems super light. maybe if I use the dark liquid wood the stain would be more to my liking??
@deerrunrevamps

Ahhh ok! Gotcha! The dark liquid wood does give you a bit deeper results, bit I find the varathane to be the best option if you want that deep dark color. You can use a waterbased topcoat over the oil based varathane stains, just wait 72 hours in between the 2

You don't want to go over it too many times, when you're removing the excess stain, only go over it once, maybe twice.. going over it too many times will lift the stain. After the surface has dried for 72 hours, you can go over it again with the stain

I tried it, ordered it direct so it wasn’t a knock off. It looks great on KZfaq and I can see why it could be a miracle for some projects but I thought the light base color I got was not really light and honestly just a hideous tone. Texture wise it feels like chalk paint. I ended up doing a whitewash over it since I disliked the color so much. The gel stain they sent me was very watery, and there didn’t seem to be any residue to mix in. I would not use this product again.

I'm sorry to hear you weren't a fan. Retique it's gel stains typically require multiple coats, especially the lighter stains. This is why I mainly use varathane's premium stains.
