I'm turning the Feywild into a playable realm for our Dungeons and Dragons campaign, focusing in this video on three dark archfey to include in your game or lore.

An archfey being trapped in a dungeon and trapped by an artifical sun sounds like an amazing dungeon crawl premise.

All three of these give a vampiric feel to them: Neifion definitely has the look, plus his control of bats, and then add to that the fact that an artificial sun was used to trap him in his castle. Nintra Soitta, with her cloak of darkness, might mean that even as a vampire she can operate in the day light. This would give an "out" for her supposed death. Another way that she could have escaped her "death" would be through her illusionary magic. The Stag King, his story is just asking for him to rise as a vampire. I would also have him go on to covert all/most of his "children" to be vampires, and have this and other crimes put him at odds with Cerunnos, making them enemies. Now whether any player characters would know about their vampiric side is a different matter, and could be a nice little surprise for them. Of course, having a warlock with an arch-fey vampire as a patron, could be interesting. Maybe the patron needs to invite the warlock over for a bite!!!

I love this! There’s an argument here for a dark, evil nature that depends on taking from others feeling vampiric as a literary rule. A horror-based Feywild is closer than it appears.

You mentioned having trouble finding info on the Wild Hunt/Stag King... In Windsor Forest there is a legend of Herne the Hunter that bears resemblance to the Stag King legend, and the Wild Hunt legend. They might even be cognate with one another. I guess what I'm saying is google Herne the Hunter, and you might find some Stag-King appropriate legendry you can shoe-horn into your D&D game ;)

Chances are you'd also want to do a bit of reading on Cernunnos, who is a similarly horned god figure in Celtic and Gaelic mythology.

One thing I've been working on is a theory that the Shadowfell and Ravenloft are parts of the Feywild which makes the Dark Fey kingdoms/courts make a lot more sense with a 'rule of 3' appoch. Titania rules over the Feywild, The Queen of Night and Magic rules over the Feydark, and the Raven Queen rules over the place between due to a long forgotten pact where she gave up her name/station to become the Elven God of Death. This allows your Dark Fey courts to be Domains of Dread which makes a lot more sense of their actions/lore - and the rule that Feylords reincarnate lets them die and be reborn - except for the Raven Queen who in my lore was the first Fey to want to die and ended up cursed to be the first undead Feylord/God.

The chaos of the Deck of Many Things fits well into the fey wild. Just had someone disappear from one of the cards while fighting off the attempted summoning of a demon lord into the fey. The others panicked and threw down their cards resulting in it raining gems and then a wish spell which was used to stop the ritual rather than find the missing guy, leading to a potentially massive quest to find a way to recover their lost comrade. They've been advised to ask the summer or winter court, or consult with one of the hags with the knowledge that Faustian bargain is the likely outcome for such an ask. Even the guy who disappeared was having a blast as table effects throughout the rest of the session. Great chaotic mess of an inclusion that casually tossed a spontaneous wrench into all plans up to that moment. Can't wait to see what bargains they try to make and with whom. I believe a trip to plead for service from the winter court is most likely.

I've been toying with the idea of making Lolth a dark archfey type with a sort of fate weaver aesthetic instead of her current demon queen aspect

So Japheth and Neifion play a prominent role in a couple of D&D Novels about the Abolethic Sovereignty. Worth a read I felt and they're available on Audible. ("City of Torment" and "Key of Stars") Also, I think that various combinations of characters like the Stag King have cropped up over the years. The Erl King, The Wild Hunt, Seritos, The Goblin King. They could all be just "aspects" of the same Archfey. Great video! Gave me lots of ideas!

I just found this series and I am loving it for my fey campaign! I was wondering if you might make a video on how fey npcs might trick players into making deals with them? Or how that happens in folklore? Creatures like hags and alot of fey generally I feel rely so much on binding deals made but I know my party would be so hesitant to make any sort of deal! Thanks again, I'm loving this series and how you take from actual folklore!

I like taking inspiration from the Dresden Files, and have the Stag King be the de facto leader of the fae not aligned with Summer or Winter. In the books, the Goblin King leads the Hunt, and often at his side rides his best bud Odin/Santa. It's explicit that one powerful figure can wear many names and roles, so the Goblin King is probably Herne and Cernunnos as well. If you're a predatory creature caught by the Hunt, you can either become a Hound for the night and join in, or you're prey. Unless the Hunt is directed at you specifically, of course. Then, you're in for a bad time.

I feel like there is a lot of talk about the chaos that the fey portray. And little mention of the order that they must adhere to. The ordered chaos (chaotic order) of the courts is a juicy juxtaposition that really portrays the weirdness of the faerie.

Late to the party here but enjoying the videos: Maybe the Stag King becomes a combination Arch Fey-Vampire because of the way he died. His warlocks then would have two subclass options to consider and perhaps extra motivation to hunt vampires like those who killed/changed the king.

My rogue in a campaign is now working for a hag after they made a deal. It ended up being one of the few fey bargains that won't completely screw over the dealmaker. Because as the dm put it evil as she is she is not stupid. My rogue ended up providing her with some very vital information needed to defend her coven without being asked. This wasn't even part of the deal but my rogue took initiative and played it smart. So he has avoided outliving his usefulness. It does help that my rogue is a soulknife and psionic abilities are extremely rare especially in older editions of dnd. Point being he's not an easily disposible minion of the hag and would in fact be difficult to replace. The dm had intended for this to be a gotcha moment but it is turning out to be a far better deal than anyone including the dm anticipated.

I often enjoy Forgotten Realms lore, but Neifion has always bothered me: he gives all these vampire vibes as Lord of Bats, but the name is a Gaelic version of Neptune (god of seas) and pronounced "nay-vyon". I just feel like Forgotten Realms finds something vaguely Gaelic and makes it a fey thing, instead of understanding any of the linguistic meaning.
