One of the things they is touched on in the material around the Unseelie Fey template is that the Seelie are very puritan. Only pure fey are allowed while the Unseelie embrace the freedom to love whomever you please, hence why they have a template that can be applied to any living thing. If you are wanting to make the Unseelie less of a clear cut enemy, you could use that as a leveraging point since the Seelie would likely be unfriendly to any sorcerers, fey heritage bards, or half-breeds of any flavor. There is also the matter of what happens to half-elves when they die as the elven gods refuse to say whether they are in their domains or not. Given that the Feywild is the avenue for souls to be born and reincarnated, it is entirely possible that the Unseelie could be providing sanctuary, enslaving, or doing any other number of things to the half-elven souls as another potential plot hook.

I love the adventures of the Odyssey. I really enjoyed your suggestion of having the waters below Scylla still contain Circe's poison. The possibility of being turned into a monster by the water only adds a new level of danger. I could see characters fall off the ship and turn into giant eals or squids that attack their former crewmembers.

@CantRIP9389

The physicality of the hag concept is part of the entire point of it. The twisted view of these creatures, of the code of right and wrong, is part of where they draw their power from, and the breaking of those rules being what shows the consequences. The form is the game of how they interact with the world of "normal" people... the facade is the game itself, and interacting with it is glimpsing their "true" selves, what in the light of truth is clearly twisted and standing of weak ground in the karmic balance and purity of soul department. The farther away you get from that essence of what makes a hag a hag, you may as well create something new. Just a general spirit, or "good witch". You can have magical women of rage, vengeance, healing, or whatever you'd like... they can be awesome, but needn't be under the Hag umbrella. Eidolons. Basically Fae. Still best kept to whatever game it is that defines them. However it is that their particular aberration, their incursion of the reality and rules thereof they would impose upon "the normal world" being what defines them, and what makes them different from the aesthetic exotica which is quickly becoming the average in modern DnD, and interacting with the metaphysical existential gambit of all that being a riddle solving process in most ways and situations.

I wouldn't be able to resist playing off the proverbial rock and hard place of the metaphor. Scylla being a feminine rage which will pursue obsessively seeking to do onto men, to add injury and poison, to scourge and harry. Charybdis being an enduring static effect... an absence that takes and draws into it. An allegory to wanting and needing. A negative force of drawing entropy. Chary being best kept less exotic but just as relentless, but Scylla being more of a person with complexities which inflicts its volatile psychology onto others. Tactically, of course, the rage of Scylla would be the escalation of scenarios and conflict, while Charybdis being the constant hazard, the bad times beyond simply Scylla's barking vagina mouths.

I was today days old when I realized that the Crossing Cape Horn sequence in Master of Commander is almost certainly a call-back to Scylla and Charybdis - Lucky Jack Aubrey has to choose "The Lesser of Two Weevils/Evils", sacrifice the life of a popular sailor who has fallen overboard or lose his whole ship...

These ideas are excellent. I'm building a Feywild campaign using WBTW as the basis and looking for as many alternate adventure possibilities to give my party choice in which direction to go. The idea of using Isolde to transition them into the Shadow Carnival is excellent. I'm curious what other offshoot stories have you found that tie into WBTW?

I know others have mentioned the Dresden Files - but this series does a good job with "beautiful" characters like Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness - she's supernaturally beautiful, but also commands the uttermost respect from the other powerful groups like human wizards, vampire courts, and other fey creatures. Major characters show actual fear when Mab arrives. Like if a mobster, warlord, or royal, happens to be handsome. Their appearance is a feature, but it isn't what most folks are thinking about and it's never used to diminish.

Yes! I love these sentences that tie together the adventures but leave us DMs hunting for clues to tie it all together! One interesting sentence that might tie this to Wild Beyond the Witchlight (and specifically "current events" happening to the Summer Court in that module), Sir Talevar went to Prismeer as an emissary of Queen to Titania "to persuade Zybilna to ally with the Seelie Court against it's hated enemies, the fomorians." I very much love the idea of tying Witchlight to the Dread Domains of Ravenloft and this thread has been super important to me for my Feywild>Ravenloft Pepe Silvia corkboard. What if the Fomorians are amassing once more to make a bid for territory in the lands of the Seelie? They've been forced to scrape out survival in the Wildlands of the Unseelie lands for too long. Queen Mab is happy to keep them in their place but has routed their attempts to move into Unseelie territory too many times. Perhaps the Fomorians have a new, charismatic leader among them?

I'm happy to see Scylla! Though you now have me debating if the hydra is more dangerous than the hydra. Hercules and Iolaus defeated the hydra alone, but a crew of trained soldiers were too slow to prevent six of their own from being swallowed whole. I think Scylla is bigger and stronger than the hydra, which fits its role in the story. She is too fearsome to fight, sacrifice six men and flee. Of course you could run a high level campaign where the players are demi-gods, then fighting a creature like Scylla is more fair.
@feywildfiend
@feywildfiend 6 күн бұрын
That’s actually true! In theory they could just chop off her heads, which is where my thinking was, but with her speed she’d have to have an insane AC. And she would be too big to hit at her core. Maybe, to make her easier, they could follow hydra rules, and a certain amount of damage in one strike could lob off a head. That way, they wouldn’t have to fully kill her to defeat her.

I've heard a few songs recently about aquatic fey. Selkie by Ebony Buckle. A different take on the seal-wife motif. Ebony is a London-based singer-songwriter who performs with the new age prog band Solstice. The Kelpie by Jethro Tull. Gets into the Who is the Predator question, as the alluring Hag concept does, but differently this time. The song was apparently recorded for the Scottish-themed Stormwatch album, but didn't make it onto the vinyl release. And one I knew before, Seven Widows Weep by Sirenia. A tale of Nordic sirens in Symphonic Metal style. The video is outstanding.

It's really interesting to see how Greek mythology monsters permeate the DnD multiverse. At a minimum Centaur, Chimera, Dryad, Hydra, Lamia, Medusa, Minotaur, Nixie, Nymph, Pegasus, Satyr, Sirene, Sylph, Titan, Triton. At least some of this is thanks to Narnia.

For Good Hags, look at the "Grannies" of the older editions of Ravenloft... The main thing with Hags is that they're main thing isn't actually "Evil", but being contrary to the world that they're in, essentially, with most domains of Ravenloft, they're on the side of good out of, well, pure spite at the dark powers... You also have the Blood/Red Hags from Kobold Press which are more neutral in nature, though rather bloodthirsty

Just as a major note from the earlier editions with the Ravenloft setting, other than the Domain of Barovia, Hags rarely exist as, well, Hags... Most end up changing because the hags nature is to be counter to that of the local world...essentially, meaning you end up chaotic good hags with a more, actually, grandmotherly nature there. Perhaps the link and sacrifices to Ceithlenn might be strengthening the nature of Hags, as a whole (considering the nightmare mess with Jenny Greenteeth from the AL Campaign set parallel to Curse of Strahd), inside that domain.

I was thinking that the noble would need her beautiful but dim-witted husband (whom she does truly care for) back home to keep her husband's unscrupulous relatives, that she has been politically out maneuvering, from claiming the family estate, the husband is the cursed monster in the sea cave, and the whirlpool is a trapped, young jormungandr that the party could potentially free and thus have friendly to them. They gotta find out what happened, where the husband is, how to break the curse by finding the witch, brave the whirlpool to get the cure, then face off against the monster while trying to break the curse.
