Dark Aspects of Nintendo #12 - Banjo-Kazooie

Күн бұрынEpisode 12 of my "Dark Aspects" series and the first look at a favorite series of mine: Banjo-Kazooie. British developers Rare (formerly known as Rareware in the golden days) are known for their "inappropriate" sense of humor. This reputation can stem mainly from their raunchy N64 deviation Conker's Bad Fur Day- but can be easily traced back to games not blatantly adult.
This is most obvious in Banjo-Kazooie: and while cleverly hidden, there's a lot of surprising cases of innuendo and toilet jokes that would be right at home in Conker. After covering that side of the coin, I analyze the fearful and discuss effective elements of shock in the game like meeting Clanker for the first time.

Hey all--as some commenters have pointed out, while certain members of the Banjo-Kazooie team had some involvement with Conker's Bad Fur Day, there weren't many. I made it seem like every single dev carried over between games! As a company, they all fall under the umbrella of Rare, but the teams consisted of many different individuals. I'll be more careful about that sort of thing in the future 😮

I remember when I first played Banjo-Kazooie when I was like 5 or 6 years old... I entered Clankers' Cavern and got the shock of my life as this huge scary shark thing looked back at me. I screamed so loud my mother would come running upstairs. I had nightmares about Clanker for 5 months. I recently replayed Banjo-Kazooie on my old N64 and Clanker still gives me an uneasy feeling lmao

I have been thinking about that lately--Dark Aspects sort of turned into covering any and everything not allowed in an "E" rated game, but that doesn't make sexual/toilet humor dark, which was the primary focus of this video (at least the first half). I think in the future I'll split these topics into their own sub-series, and make Dark Aspects exclusively about horror/violent themes in family-friendly games.

@@ThaneGaming good comment. I think its important to cover both subjects. Its amazing if you look at all the things from our childhood ie tv shows, video games, music, radio, kids books, movies etc. Its incredible how much hidden sexual jokes and scary stuff was in our childhood before the age of internet and social media. I can only imagine how the zoomers and gen alpha will deal with the effects

Fact: You thought that Clanker’s voice sounded like monster groans, but no. The actual sounds Clanker makes are actually Banjo’s slowed way down. Just like Napper. Such a tragic character... He was later cut up into many pieces in Banjo-Land. 😢😢😢 The god of this world is truly cruel to Clanker...

Just my personal take, but I always thought that Kazooie's comment about the ice key wasn't so much telling Banjo to shove it, but more....fantasizing, to put it mildly.

Sargent StarmanSuper as do I! Metroid is super cool, I’ll get around to it I promise. Probably start with NES/Super, then Zero Mission/Fusion and go to the Prime series from there 👍🏻Nintendo’s take on horror

Clanker does seem a little less scary considering he is friendly it’s just the angle he’s introduced at is quite frightening and makes you think “uh-oh, he spotted us, quick swim the other way”, now yes Clanker means you no harm but you just can’t shake the feeling that if you get any closer he may accidentally chomp you to pieces

Though I guess it does help Clanker’s case considering he does have a happy expression on his face, it’s really Clanker’s sheer size and the angle he positions himself in when you first meet him that frightens people

I think i know why Nintendo sold Rare to Microsoft. As funny as the dirty hidden content is, Nintendo probably saw Rare as unreliable when it comes to making a completely family friendly game. I'm willing to bet Nintendo was spooked by the British developer, and that fear made them abandon Rare to Microsoft. Rare also seemed to be tired of making family friendly games, and they lashed against Nintendo by hiding adult humor in their games. It's all the more funny when you realize that Nintendo added Bayonetta, snake, and joker to smash, considering those characters have a huge history of purely Mature rated content.

I thought it was Rare that took Microsofts money? Like it was the choice of Rare to go with Microsoft, not Nintendos, but I could be wrong. I know Rare was a 2nd part developer, but I thin thats a contract agreement and not ownership of said company, meaning Nintendo just had a contract with rare to be exclusive developers for them.

still they weren't capable releasing a mature game hit with microsoft so I don't think they weren't really tired of kid friendly games, they just wanted to create great products with a bit of adult jokes without going too far, not counting conker of course

@@fuzy2449 The reason Banjo was made is because Project Dream was canceled, cartoony games were easier to make in the 90's. Now that technology has advanced, Rare no longer sees a use for the Bear and Bird other than ports.

My N64 didn't come with Mario 64, so my parents bought Banjo Kazooie together, when I was 10 years old. I'm brazilian, so I never understood what characters were saying back then, but I always loved the game's atmosphere, never felt it too dark. It's cool all the trivia you brought, this shows how clever the developers were. Nice video!

The funny thing with the flower pots thanking Banjo, if you're from the UK you'd most likely clearly hear "thank you", as some people over here pronounce a "th" sound like an "f" sound.

Very true! Personally, even I don't hear it as "f you," but I made it sound like I do so I should've rephrased that part of the video. Just wanted to talk about Grant's difficulties trying to convince Nintendo he wasn't swearing 😆

I'm really glad you're still finding games to talk about in this series. As always this was very interesting to watch. Also, I highly recommend going over Zack and Wiki, there are quite a few creepy bits in that game.

I've always loved the perfect fine line Banjo-Kazooie walked through even as a kid, albeit some of the jokes did go over my head. But hey that's how you keep it tasteful, like Spongebob.

Banjo-Kazooie is a favorite of mine! I originally had it on N64, and have played through it several times on Xbox Live Arcade. I’ve played and recorded the Rare Replay version here, and thought it’d be perfect to talk about since the series recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. I have yet to complete Banjo-Tooie (working on it ;) and tackle the uh… “loved” Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts- but I know both games are filled with plenty of dark elements and jokes to discuss. Banjo-Tooie always impressed me in just how shocking its opening sequence is with several character deaths, to the point where I was kind of scared as a kid. Did anything scare you in your first play through of either Banjo-Kazooie or its sequel? Let me know below :)

That was probably the most fun comment chain I've ever had on KZfaq- you commented on my Dark Aspects of Color Splash video and I just saw you updated it about two weeks ago (sorry I missed it)! I've been doing well, how about yourself? That was so cool seeing the progress of someone plaything through one of my favorite games for the first time, I'll treasure that. Once I get back into the groove I should be uploading more, I just got an apartment with my girlfriend for the first time- we moved all the way from little Vermont to Arizona. We've settled in and have other jobs now, but I'll have weekends off and hopefully some time during the week to work on videos :) glad to hear from you again, hope all is well!

I try to make it as engaging as possible all the way through, I watch it over and over to add a sound effect or something if any part drags on. Was your favorite the original Banjo-Kazooie or Tooie (if you played it)? I think the first is very, very well designed but I’m working my way through the sequel now

Of course when Kazooie is firing eggs out her back end she isn’t pooping them out, that’s not how egg laying works, anatomically speaking she would actually be shooting them out her lady parts, now how’s that for dirty, I’m just glad that Kazooie is willing for you to pick up already existing eggs even though she has a technically infinite supply that could be refilled very easily, but implementing that mechanic would change the game’s rating completely, that’s even dirtier

OK, I can't stay silent about this. How the hell is everyone hearing "fuck you" from the pots!? I've been playing this game for over 20 years, and not ONCE have I ever thought that...until I saw loads of videos about it on the Internet! Like, this is a really well known 'flub', but I cannot hear it at all. I'm trying SO hard to hear "fuck you" but I can't even bend my ears to get anywhere near that sound. Is it an American thing?! ...ranting aside, BK and BT are two of my favourite games of all time and I will carry on playing them til I die ❤️

Grunty looks good young not gonna lie. But knowing what she was and will be, that's a rough one. Banjo threeie having a young grunty would be an interesting twist. I have no hopes for that game obviously

Haha, this was back when I thought I had to include a sound effect every time I put something on the screen--I just thought the inklings would fit, I don't know why I didn't put in the real noises of a lungfish though 😅

I think the idea is that Tooty's the prettiest thing in their world, and nothing else than the best would suffice. The weird thing is that Tooty is just cute, while remade Grunty is drop dead gorgeous. She actually looks more like the melon girl from the ending.

Some of this is really inappropriate by today's standards since advertising for kids has changed drastically in the 20+ years since B&K came out but this was standard acceptable child humour. Advertisements were geared towards being disgusting - candy science where parents paid a premium for horrible gummies for kids. Jars of toe nail clippings. "Ew!" was in, in the West; a trend that didn't die for a good while until being phased out with what is considered more "child friendly" advertising and content now.

Banjo Kazooie is my absolute favorite N64 game. Even more than any I'd thr Mario games, although SM64 is a close second. I still can't believe the same people created that God aweful Donkey Kong 64 game. That was the longest bore fest of a game I have ever experienced. I gave up on it after the 3rd time I had to go back and start the game all over again. I don't get how they made such an amazing game, and then that.

Banjo Kazooie is my favorite platformer on the system for sure, I like it better than SM64 too 😁 haha I have yet to play DK64, I’ve heard people that love it and others that say how much of a slog it is...I would love to try a remake that fixes the more tedious gameplay

@@ThaneGaming let me know if you do! The idea behind it is good. Its just that there are things you can only collect with each certain character. So when you unlock one 3/4 of the way through the game you have to go back to the start and play every level with the newest character, over and over for each character. So it made me feel like I was hardly making any progress. Its incredibly tedious lol. Also I'm glad you agree with me about Banjo Kazooie. People usually tell me I'm crazy. "What?! How can Mario 64 or Mario Kart not be your favorite?" Lol

I wouldn’t worry too much! There definitely are toilet jokes but that’s a very small part of the game-you won’t find much more than what’s in this video 😄 I don’t usually like that kind of humor either but I love these games!

@@aliasella488 Of course, you're welcome--I hope you enjoy the game! I would just steer clear of Conker's Bad Fur Day if you're easily grossed out, it's another N64 game made by Rare and it looks cute but it's explicitly for adults (unlike Banjo)

I agree with all your theories except for the one about the urns saying “F you”. Even back then around the year 1999 when I was playing that game , I clearly heard them saying “thank you” and never mistaken them for what they’re saying.” It’s just that a few years ago recently I first heard someone mentioning that false theory.
