I'm not going to say the Chapter 6 Businessman is my favorite TTYD character, but he's my favorite TTYD character.

What I love about TTYD is the writers were not afraid to tell realistic stories through cartoony characters. Podley is an old man racked with guilt over the cowardice of his youth, but he's also too proud to fully admit his failures and set them right. Bobbery is able to finally grieve his wife thanks to Mario, but the years leading up to TTYD could not have been good to him. A sad old man who once had all the world could offer, reduced to living the life of a shut-in, both figuratively and literally. Then you have a character like Zess T, who although was probably never easy to get along with has been made more biting by the loss of her husband. Out of all the widowed characters in the game, and there are several, she is the only one who wears exclusively black - often indicative of someone still is mourning. She's considered notoriously finicky, perhaps less because she's a difficult person and more because she's afraid to be alone. Really if you delve into her character, she's only abrasive to Mario and Flavio; both men who have negatively impacted her in some way. Dialogue with npcs actually paints her to be thoughtful and welcoming if she likes you. Who hasn't met people like these in their lives?

I actually expected Paper Mario TTYD Remake to be more in line with the Japanese release in terms of dialogue. Don't know what happened for the switch to suddenly flip (pun not intended), but Nintendo Switch is the only console that seems free of any type of censorship. Games you'd expect to show up on playstation, end up only on Switch and Steam. Though I've never seen any discourse over Vivian at all. I just assumed no one cares. But that might be the side effect of never having made a Twitter account, ever. Im always shocked whenever there's a supposed controversy.

Bobbery's Letter and the tale of Scarlette's death is a good way to communicate a lesson about death in a story meant largely for children. It's done with gentleness, as usually many people don't get to see their loved ones before it happens. Reminding the person mourning how the people they lost wouldn't want them to suffer...It's sincere. It's a good way to help anyone, regardless of age, move on. Also, I just love Keelhaul Key. The new jungle instruments for the new Battle themes, and the pirate treasure plotline is so much fun!

Two Undertale reference and an avatar reference in a ttyd video? It feels like this was tailor made for me. Also, as someone who recently got into ttyd from the remake, the twist of the train mystery where it was revealed that the toad actor/doopliss was the one behind it totally caught me off guard because I made a bold prediction early on and clung to it with total confidence for the entire chapter up until I was blatantly proven wrong. I paid too much attention to the little quirks of the staff members, particularly the chef’s speech issues which had attention drawn to in the dialogue that made it seem important to me. I convinced myself that the whole threatening letter was a misunderstanding because the chef asked someone, particularly the waitress who seemed pretty ditzy and airheaded, to tell the passengers that a sticky tasty threat (misspoken attempt to say “treat”) was awaiting them and so the waitress agreed without question and wrote a threatening letter about a sticky tasty demise and gave it to Mario for some reason. I thought the missing jewelry and briefcase were all red hearings and that the whole mystery would be revealed to be one big joke with Pennington being dumb enough to buy into it all being part of the punchline; I stayed convinced of this until doopliss was fully apprehended and confessing, I was certain I had predicted the twist from the jump and was patting myself on the back for solving the mystery early, I still feel a little annoyed that little details like the chef’s speech struggles never factored into anything because I was so sure it was the entire crux of the mystery. Maybe I’m just as delusional as Pennington. 😅

It seems like the remake only emphasized all the much darker parts… transforming them into something _far_ more in turn 🤔
