I like how the animatic shorts for Legion and Battle for Azeroth were done in an oil painting look. I have been challenging myself to study an art style of a game I love to play in order to learn how to draw and render character in a similar way. I have learned so much by doing so too. I can look at new art by them and see what they doing to achieve the look for each character. I did discover that with anime styles there are specific way to draw character to portray a certain personality type.

Many of these videos inspire me work harder at my art. At the same time, every video reinforces the notion that the gaming industry is no better than any other non-essential industry that fosters a stressful environment over something trivial. It's a bittersweet thing.
@cesarandrade1987
@cesarandrade1987 4 жыл бұрын
Transforming Wagon In a way, I get you. I internalized the following ideas as a ways to make sense of it, that a job is a job because it’s hard at some level. It can be rewarding and full of purpose, maybe even full of flow and happiness at times, but it is also bound to be stressful. A perfectly non stressful job is a job you don’t give two shits about. We stress over stuff we care about. Family, friends, happiness, and yes, jobs. I would rather suffer something of my own choosing , than to find an elusive job free of suffering or stress(there are none) and I don’t mean this as an edge lord where I think « Art is paiiiin ». I’m actually pretty optimistic nowadays, but having the capacity to choose your own problems to solve is largely a marker of someone that has made it, if you think about it.
@transformingwagon
@transformingwagon 4 жыл бұрын
@@cesarandrade1987 thank you for your insight. It is true that to choose your own problems is a marker of success. I just find odd that the job itself creates unnecessary stress when there's really nothing at stake (nobody has died for not playing a video game). I like the way you think. Thanks!
@cesarandrade1987
@cesarandrade1987 4 жыл бұрын
@@transformingwagon thanks for sharing your thoughts, it prompts me to find my own answers to the questions. Although I do not want to justify, say, the exploitation and undue crunch time the AAA industry subjects it's personnel, which is definitely awful and should be changed, can we, in the end, say the job creates the stress, or do we choose to be stressed over the task at hand? I wager there is a spectrum between working an impossible task imposed upon us (see "The Expert" comedy sketch) and doing something so trivially easy to the individual it is purely their own mind stressing them out about the the task rather than its contents. For the entirety of the spectrum however, I believe we can always choose our response, and I think we have more control over our stress response than we might think. And a final tidbit, stress has been this big convenient psychological bad we must avoid, but maybe, like sadness in "inside out", wouldn't it be better to assume it serves a purpose? How much is harmful I guess is a matter of self-knowledge and avoiding all out chronic stress, this has worked as of recent to manage my own work stress. Thanks for the conversation!

Are there really people who constantly complain about the facts you're providing about the demands of the industry? I mean, yeah, it can be really overwhelming and challenging when you are still a beginner having a hard time to enter the job market at first, but it would've never come into my mind to consider this statements harsh or arrogant since your insights and information are really valuable. It really helps to see things from the company's / recruiter's perspective. There are some professional youtuber artists on the other hand who are really intimidating and pretty destructive when it comes to subjects like application rejections or no-gos of the industry and sometimes it looks like they just want to rant about beginners and their lack of experience without offering any prospects for the improvement of their situation and it often saddens me when their community convey the same kind of negative energy by making fun of their potential future fellow artists/designers. That's why I started to stick with communities and channels like yours years ago that address all those challenges with a more motivational and optimistic approach.
@TrentKaniuga

Oh, I get some very nasty letters about it. Yes. But it's not going to get easier. As consumers want better products, the bar gets higher for creators and artists. You usually seldom have to deal with negative people in the comments here. It's a good community because everyone helps to keep it supportive and encouraging.

If I'd have known this before committing to school and working in this field I never would have gone ahead with it. It is rather bullshit that employers can't intuitively see talent and the potential of an artist to create their vision and beyond. You literally have to show them before they will hire you. It sounds obvious but to creative types it is anything but. My advice would be fuck the big boys, go smaller or independent. The only other option is like Trent says here, go ham learning what they want and then still cross your fingers. There are snobby circles, stereotypes, double standards, a lot of ignorance and obviously criticism in this field and a lot of people can't hack it. This is why people like him go solo because they're tired of uninspired, greedy, morons telling them how to work. Trent's proven he knows his stuff and concluded it's not worth it to listen to some overpaid asshole tell you to do your job.

You should not force yourself to care about things that you don't care about. When I drew comics, I felt the same way about museums. So I have a question. Quite related with a previous comment. If for whatever reason you end your contract on, lets say, the Diablo team. Will it be dificult to find another job on that style? Because Diablo has an unique style, even compared with overwatch or WoW. I understand the need to focus on the art style of a company, but as you said, there will be a lot of competition and a low chance to get that job. And after all we still need to keep paying the bills at the end of the month. On that sense, would you recommend to focus on indie/small studios rather than big studios? Even tho the benefits and "fame" that small companies give are not the same than a big company.
@TrentKaniuga

Everything is built on momentum. If you establish yourself as a dark fantasy artist, it is easier to get jobs on dark fantasy jobs. Because I was a concept artist on Diablo 3, I find that I have infinite opportunities to work on Dark Fantasy games, if I choose to. It is harder for me to transition to Sci Fi, since I don't have a successful history of working on Sci Fi. But... you can always go to a smaller, more indie team. At this point, I don't think about employment much. I think more in terms of my audience, and what they want. For example... I'm trying to write and draw illustrated novels. But my audience are used to me making youtube videos about how to get jobs in concept art. They are a totally different audience to those who want my fiction. See what I'm saying? I've built momentum in 1 direction. If I want an audience to follow my fiction, i have to build all new momentum.

How do you separate your friends and family from your business and your art. I keep hearing alot of criticism from friends constantly giving me suggestion.

I mean listening to criticism is important but it kinda depends on what they are saying, is it ' lmao that sucks ' or ' I think his hand looks a little weird ' type of criticism ?

@@nikki-zeero3122 more like. "You need to do this and this to make your business successful" or "You have to do this type of art and sell this stuff." Essentially telling me how to do my work.

@@zeroi777 ah I used to have the same problem (especially when I was a beginner) , my simple solution for this situation is ; If you wouldnt go to them for advice (on the spesific topic) , dont take their criticism either . Like , if they actually have some knowledge about art , finding a job as an artist and other stuff , listening to them might be a good idea ; but if they dont , just ignore them lmao .

All I hear from this is "don't be an individual, conform to the job". Which is fine, but it tells me that AAA concept art certainly isn't for me.

Then I've helped you to save many years of your life :) To work at a AAA game studio requires a LOT of conformity. If you don't, then you're not considered a "team player", which is why I got into a lot of trouble the bigger the studio got.

@@TrentKaniuga I just feel that, as an artist, I should be valued for my style. I understand why that isn't a thing, but that just seems stifling.

Dang this is legit. This gives me a few ideas with the crypto/blockchain projects i participate in. Might need me a legit artist...tired of limiting myself to my personal skills. Time to explore fiverr or something lol.
