It's so pain stricken - the weight of seeing millions come through their doors and never reach the throne, go hollow, and fail is audible; palpable. The best way they can arm you is to warn against what is to come. They wish you to succeed, and fear that you, too, will not.

And not even 15 minutes in the Emerald Herald ask you to go kill some lords and become the new king... Everytime I play DS2, I make my own headcannon that I'm just a Undead searching left and right in Drangleik for a cure and discovering at the same time how different Kingdom dealt with the Undead Curse.

Makes you think that the point of the second game wasnt really about killing the lords and restarting the age of fire over and over again It was about the struggling of humanity against their curse that gwyn put against them, foreshadowing what gwyn has caused to the world in ds3 because of his arrogance The plan for ds2 was recovering your own past, discovering who you really are before the undead curse, they even planning the relationship with emerald herald to be more personal

@@steelpapaya6270 I'd say that works better for RPGs that aim for wish fulfillment and escapism, rather than something like the Souls Series. One of the reasons why so many people intentionally make ugly and unrealistic characters as opposed to other games. But that's just my opinion, I usually don't need much of a backstory for most RPGs, but I would've preferred more in all the Souls games.

My first entry to the Soul's game was DS2. I had so much fun with it. My friend and I co-op'd it multiple times, pretty much beating it around 10 times in total. I know a lot of people didn't like this one, but I love it.

i beat ds1 so many times. wasn't excited for ds2, especially with all the negativity behind it. bought it on launch day tho, beating it multiple times on ps3 and then multiple times on pc after SOTFS came out. it's the black sheep ofc, cos ds1 and 3 are so connected, and there were unique gameplay changes. ds2 feels like a rare, good filler piece though. just looked this up out of nostalgia after beating elden ring and watching old dank souls stuff. fromsoft just makes crazy games.

There was so much that was left out and didnt made into the game. It was supposedly have more storylines with the emerald herald and you the player. Shannalot was very different compare to the firekeepers of ds1 and 3. Unlike them she is purposely on the side of the player whatever side you choose. There was a cut content where you help shannalot and revealing she's actually a child. There's two voice actress for her in the credits one is a little girl version of her. Hopefully if a remaster for this game comes out they could add those cut content in the game.

I really rather like this intro. To be clear, I'm talking about the CGI part before spawning at Things Betwixt. It really gives me a sorta... Majora's Mask vibe, what with your character falling into an abyss and waking up in god knows where. Like the comment someone else made, I also really dig the mystical and fairytale-like atmosphere of this one. I like the fact that the Bearer of the Curse is drawn towards Drangleic "without really knowing why." That phrase is one that exudes mystery and it really kinda permeates throughout the rest of the game. This isn't to say that you do stuff without knowing why all the damn time, but I do feel like in DS2 in particular, there exists this sort of sense... as though you are being drawn to do the things you do and go to the places you go... "without really knowing why."

@JayTraversJT2 жыл бұрын
The "without really knowing why" is a pretty constant message in the soul's games due to being undead/unkindled. Like all undead, you hunger for more souls. With more souls - you gain power. With more power - you regain knowledge of the world. It's almost a beautiful 4th wall breaking mechanic in that you the player share the same memory as the undead and have to learn with them why you follow such prophecies despite not really knowing why. Incredibly smart storytelling.
@kr1spness Жыл бұрын
@@JayTraversJT yeah, but DS1 and 3 are more clear on their goal and 1 has you locked up for hollowing while 3 has you come out of a coffin because you've been summoned. This is the only game where you just show up in Things Betwixt and they tell you nothing about why you're there, but without any raven carrying you or bonfire teleporting you, you just walk out into the world and wonder wtf that was back there. It had a lot more mystery than the others in their intro. This one felt like you woke up from death whereas the others felt like they just wouldn't clarify your origin because you weren't all that special.

This game remains a gem. I do not know why it gets so much flack, it is very grand. That intro alone was wow, then the scene where they were trying to touch their memory of the long gone irretrievable past as the OP goes hollow and throws 'emself into the maelstrom that plonks em in the realm betwixed. The facts this plays perhaps thousands of years after 1 and this curse is incurable, but the fools errand will still try. Its like a long forgotten " Why am I repeating history?" through out all the souls games, its like this unknowable dejavu that you know you must somehow know been there before, and yet you never have been there in this life. Upon the ashes of one kingdom shall be built another and upon that another fire will burn it down. Miyazaki is a god and his mind a legendary tome of greatness. Not a single game he has made I disliked. I bow to greatness and he made this a great game too! In Straid's famous words " Feeble cursed one! Stop being so weak!" o;

There is esoteric symbolism here. Wheel of samsara which is represented by the phrase "like a moth drawn to a flame, your wings will burn in anguish time after time". If you notice, as this is spoken you can see the "brightbugs" swarming into the abyysal vortex.) The wheel of Samsara is the idea of how until we are able to transcend this world through incremental (between lives) progress towards true acknowledgement of the Divine, we are subject to perpetual rebirth into this imperfect world, which is by design increasingly rife with suffering. The Fire keepers, (keepers of true, organic, noncorrupted life, still infused with Light) are easily associated with the Norns of Germanic mythology; the keepers of fate. This fate idea is further strengthened by the "Kind Old Dear" in the beginning of the cinematic, who spins a loom. This is a clear hearken to the spinners of faith in Greek mythos.. I forget their names psychopaths, but they are a clear spiritual cognate to the Norms of the Germanic traditions. psychopathy (which I believe is the result of gradual moral deteriation of the soul; not necessarily by one's own doing... Our souls can be stripped of Light by those already devoid of it themselves; the most cruel and malicious of people on this Earth.) To become "Hollow" is to be born as a psychopath. It is now known that these "people" we know as psychopaths are born this way, and have no real way of being treated. The only pleasure they derive from life is when they are able to be cruel in some way to others. They do not feel sadness, happiness, love, fear, or shame, to name a few, emotions we unfortunately assume are innate to all humans. Their goal is like that of a psychological virus: They wish you to be devoid of Light just as they are; not because they regret being stripped of it, but because they relish in the utter destruction of goodness.

Definitely the best of the Souls intros. Never understood the infatuation some have with intros that are basically just info dumps. Nothing against the other Souls games; but detailing the elaborate backstory of the main bosses never really got me in the mindset needed for these games. Informing the player (through narration as well as visual representation) that what they are fighting against is inevitability and they are woefully unprepared for the task, pretty much informs the player that failure is not defeat in this game; giving up is. It wasn't until playing this game that I fell in love with the Souls series. Honestly, though, if it wasn't for this intro I might not have stuck with it as long as I did.

the protagonist is just a stranger who has been cursed with undeath. as the fire keeper narrating the intro explains, you will lose everything and go hollow: your memories, your sense of self. even your name and face are unfamiliar to you, but for a faint glint of memory restored by the human effigy gifted by the fire keepers. why do you go to drangleic? because of want; want for more life, want for your self returned. because you are desperate and do not want to die, do not want to hollow, and like many characters you will meet all are afraid of the dark that comes after. the great whirlpool we see is more a visual metaphor for falling into darkness. it is the deep, unknowable void that comes with endless time. it can also symbolise your degradation as you hollow, only interested in the consumption of souls, for yours is a ravenous hunger. i think dark souls 2 is honestly the most legible of all the games in terms of its story, as unlike ds1 there's no time travel or furtive pygmies. most everyone you meet explicitly meditates on this key theme of want

To give you a general idea, it was never truly a curse, as much as being hollow is the natural state of your being. Dark Souls humans aren't like Earth humans. They're pre-existing hollows who've been given souls and sentience by the light of the flame and Manus' humanity. As the flame fades, so too do the powers that keep hollows in this temporary human state. And when an individual person dies, their process of hollowing rapidly advances. You can temporarily undo this process with a human effigy (or raw humanity in ds1), which fills your hollowing body back to full with humanity. But in the lore, even if you don't die, it will slowly seep out like a pierced balloon. Humanity was dispersed with the death of Manus, but it's a limited resource. One day the lands will run out, and anyone who's fought off hollowing for so long will die regardless. But every death draws you ever closer to your original state of being, melting your consciousness until only the original hollow vessel remains. In Dark Souls 2, your character's just another unfortunate, temporary human. Someone bound to die to the curse. But there's talk of a cure for the hollowing, locked away somewhere deep, deep in Drangleic.

DS2 works so much better outside the DS universe and age of fire because this intro feels more like waking up in Hades. A terrible life after death, where you must kill to preserve your life because you cannot die or be released from pain while your body still spoils, fighting to avoid the inevitable darkness of losing your sense of self in immortality; like a twisted, inverse transcendence. Meanwhile One person was named King of this underworld and you have no clue where you are, but the old hags are the Fates who guide you to escape the Underworld by taking the throne, but they don't see it in your fate so they laugh. It's the only game where getting an immense amount of souls is the same as getting Lord Souls, but they say taking the throne will let those souls be born again. It's like ripping open the gates of Hell, knowing the light will dim again as they get a new life, but life will one day end again.

Was she right about the effigy? She was wrong player becomes lord, and effigy an effigy is nothing but humanity
@ethanc1121 Жыл бұрын
The firekeepers likely know that becoming a lord is bullshit. There’s a reason that in DS1 the protagonist makes a choice between light and dark, but in DS2, there is no choice (without Aldia) but to become lord. It’s all the same cycle, DS2 was very apathetic about that as a main theme

They help you at the beginning by giving you a "welcome", some advice, and a human effigy but darn why do they have to act like grade A b****s towards the player? So offputting. Even when you're welcomed into the world, you're actually not. Even though firekeepers are a force for good (or at least the closest thing approximating good in the dark souls world) they act borderline evil and creepy in this intro. I can only conclude that possibly hundreds of years (how long do firekeepers live?) living in the dark souls world has made them all bitter, cynical, and without hope. Maybe they were made firekeepers against their will? That is the most messed up thing about Dark Souls 3.
@mellamojeff4582 жыл бұрын
yes because the entire world is literally in complete disaster and chaos its not common to find people who lost hope in the world who seen so many people come and go just to end up pretty much becoming a hallow in the end thinking youre the same as them to break a curse you know you cant break
@shadee09092 жыл бұрын
This is a follow up to the dark souls 1 ending when you chose to end the first flame instead of restore it, so ds2 is supposed to be in a dark age, without fire alight in the kiln of the first flame, so the firekeepers without fire to keep are no longer the good people you know in the 1 and the 3. Being a firekeeper is a curse, but with a purpose they see as good. But being a firekeeper without fire is probably something like torture for them. And they portrayed it in a way that make them look like insane and creepy, without the hope they are supposed to have toward those who are supposed to restore the fire in the world.

It would be better than this Dark Souls should be called: Dark Souls: The monarch's throne or The last monarch, in my opinión sounds way better than just: Dark Souls 2.
@lordxepa81907 жыл бұрын
But that wouldn´t make any sense, because this isn´t the last Dark Souls game, and neither is King Vendrick or the Bearer the last monarch.
@OlbedSyanKnight7 жыл бұрын
I never said it was the last game as well as you're suppoused to become the true and only monarch, hence the title, dah... #-_-

I know you didn't say this isn't the last Dark Souls. But if it were actually called The Last Monarch, it wouldn't fit the story, precisely because this ISN'T the last Dark Souls game. That's why it shouldn't have been called The Last Monarch.
@OlbedSyanKnight7 жыл бұрын
@Calebe Xepa Not necessary need to be the last game... mate... Is just a title... Dah... As well as the title isn't something like "The Last Dark Soul" Or "The End of the Curse" that would fit more for a last Dark Souls game, but in this case is just "The last monarch" as it fits pretty well since the whole plot develops around that stupid bed rock throne as everybody desire to be the LAST & ONLY MONARCH... Though...

@@igornaimoli7321 good for you for being open to growth! i think ds2 is having a bit of a renaissance, for those that are willing anyhow. while it has some absolutely WACKY features, these were experimentations that would come to be refined as they were reiterated on in subsequent games. you wouldn't get the great dual wielding systems in ds3 and elden ring without their development for ds2, nor would there be the emphasis on summoning and group fights you get in elden ring either i think the oppressive melancholy is still so wonderful and it has the best writing and voice acting in the whole series

Well since i ALWAYS invest every single souls that i farm, none of these will be lost "over & over again" like these witches put it.. Do they think truly think were that stupid lol? ALWAYS enter boss battles with 0 souls. Thats my word of advice. It shows because my DS 3 character is a main level of 204 at the moment... 👍 😄 👍
